wow what a change
wow my life has changed.
its different.... canwe skin this ??? change is good... |
Re: wow what a change
Actually there are some included css skins, I haven't played around with them much yet.
I am just glad this is over http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif. Took most of the weekend on prep, but then it only took 2 hours to finish since I had the sql statements all prepped. Thanks to my wife Mindi for the help as well. There are some cool features, and I plan on adding some mods. One thing I need to get working is subscriptions so you can actually get email subsciptions for your threads, etc. |
Re: wow what a change
Ack. Hopefully they insert some table borders soon... ugh. Other than that, looking good!
|
Re: wow what a change
i ask that we can add the sticky to the newbe threads so they are not lost.... so can a mod... do that...
|
Re: wow what a change
Oh this will take some getting used to. I like the new features though. Cool. But the look and feel needs some polishing.
|
Re: wow what a change
PM me any suggestions.
|
Re: wow what a change
The sizing is a bit off. The pages are coming up short on the sides. Any suggestions?
Also the new features are KICK ***. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif I am already starting to love it. |
Re: wow what a change
BTW it may be running slow right now because we put in a new backup schedule for Sunday morning. I will keep an eye on it. PHP normally runs like a dog on IIS, but it seems to be running well on apache so far.
|
Re: wow what a change
Yep, it sure is a change. But reading the top message, it says we can upload and download to the forums again!?!?! That was a much requested feature.
There is one thing I really don't like though...I actually liked having the newest Posts on the top, and going down to the oldest ones. And now that's been switched! Is there any way to modify how I'm viewing the page, so I can have that one part how it was before?? Other than that one small complaint, I think the new forums look great! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/cool.gif |
Re: wow what a change
Ya having the newest Posts on top was sweet, but many wanted it set up this way as well.
I have to say that it is growning on me. I like it thus far, that is after my OMG - WTF - WTH - WIGO initial shock. |
Re: wow what a change
Well at least we did not loose the member post counts. LOL. Could you have imagined the HELL that would have been? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/shock.gif

Fyron would have never let me hear the end of it http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif.

Re: wow what a change
At the moment I don't like it. Its all new and confusing. In a month or so I guess I'll get used to it. Putting old stuff first is annoying. In the joke thread theres at least 60 pages. I gave up trying to get to the end to see new stuff. I just posted in "Flash Gordon" and it forces you to look at your post before posting it. Fine, but all the preview showed was the quote and not my stuff. I had to accept not sure if what I wrote would be posted.
edit: but I just discovered I can turn off preview. |
Re: wow what a change
can u change the order.....
|
Re: wow what a change
We have another problem. ALL of our links that have ever been included in any of our threads are all worthless now. That means the strategy threas, new member thread, FAQ thread all of them are now filled with dead links. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif
The price of change. |
Re: wow what a change
Hmm... don't call me negative Dutchie, but I don't like the forum the way it is now. I like the old form. But change must be, I'll get used to it.
There are two things bothering me, the one Renegade13 also mentioned, the loading of the Posts in reverse. This is really sucky, sucky. And the second thing is the strange error I get when I open the page. I think it has something to do with a popup window. I have a popup suppessor, so it might be that. I don't know af any way to couter this. This is the message I get: "SymRealWinOpen" is not defined. And then he askes me if I would like to correct this. This is always some text in the makeup of the window I'm looking at, so I can't change it. Any thoughts? I'm sure I'll get over the shock of the new forum within this year... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif |
Re: wow what a change
I liked the old (reverse) order better...
Also, why do the Posts take up so much space on the screen now? There's a lot of blank space above and below the text that we post, so that less information is displayed at any time on the screen... And why is the title at the top "INTEL FORUMS INTEL FORUMS"? ...wait, now it's OK. |
Re: wow what a change
Couple items that I find annoying (one of which Fyron already mentioned):
1. Horizontal sizing seems off on the tables. Using Moz 1.7.2 at 1024x768 and about 25% of the right side of Posts are 'offscreen' ... e.g. have to slide the horizontal bar right. 2. Date format. You got rid of DDMMMYY. Pet peeve :) 3. Reply method: I don't like the new threaded model. Like the flat single topic model much better. While the view is optional, replying isn't. To reply to the main topic, you have to hit 'reply' on the first post. If you hit reply on a later reply (say the Last post in the current thread), it ends up threaded. Would prefer a flat thread. New system seems like a step backwards to the pre-UBB cgi Boards of the early / mid 90's. Other than that, no issues. Most sites do posting ordering similiar to this so non issue. Never was one for skinning so indifferent about this also. Out of curiosity (maybe I missed the thread) did Shrapnel ever post why they were moving from UBB to UBB Threaded as opposed to just updating UBB or $insert_some_other_BB_here ... was this hardware / cost / or scaling driven? |
Re: wow what a change
good one =). I like it.
|
Re: wow what a change
Wow! Big changes.
But…………Strangely ………..It is not fully compatible with off-brand browsers. Firefox is having trouble wrapping text to fit the window. The problem seems to be with the code in sigs . In this thread, Tesco’s sig is displaying one long line of url’s where as in IE6.1 it gets a line break after the bracket (]). <font color="blue"> </font> |
Re: wow what a change
I don't like it but the reason why may be I'm an old grumpy ;)
Don't like much html in forums and I miss the reverse order. And My signature sucks now :( But I will be accustomed to it, I think. |
Re: wow what a change
I guess this is as good a place as any to see how the 'Attach' file function works..
Cheers! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif Edit: I guess the uplaod 'attachment' links don't work yet. Oh well. |
Re: wow what a change
Change is sometimes tough for me. Any chance of getting a bigger font size (or pointing me to where I can change it for myself)? I run my resolution higher than the typical 1024 x 768 and the font size is smaller than it was on the "old" forum. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif

Re: wow what a change
Theres a lot of new and nifty features...
But dam is this awkward, I don't know what this place looks like in Internet Exploder (Copyright to Fyron http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif) but Firefox is not enjoying this one bit... Ahh well, Guess we'll get used to it. And to add my voice to all those complaining the new post order...I have to agree. I preferred newer Posts first. Since this place gets so many replies i thought it was much better suited to newest Posts first http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif EDIT: Just so you can see. This is what this place looks like in Internet Explorer. http://www.lordexecutron.com/maliki/...telforumie.gif This is what it looks like in Mozilla Firefox. http://www.lordexecutron.com/maliki/...rumfirefox.gif |

I guess the best thing would be to insert an option for each of us to choose a unique font size for this Forum, without having to adjust the font on our Browsers. Another thing: any way of increasing the size of the 'Post' box that we write our Messages in? I feels too cramped right now. Doubling the size would be perfect. Everything else feels fine... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif |

The date format is supposed to be changeable in your user profile. I tried it but I got some sort of error. |
Re: wow what a change
Ive changed my edit box to 10 lines in my profile.
I changed the sort order back to what it used to be. Oooh I really dont like that email button. Was that there before? All it does is create a mailto: link in the page. A mailto: link on a webpage searchable from the internet? Not good. Automatic spam collection. I would have thought the UBB folks would have replaced that with some sort of java script thing. I might suggest it to them. I guess color coding will help. You can use them to munge an address <font color="00ff00">gandalf</font><font color="ccffcc">@</font><font color="yellow">community</font><font color="gold">.net </font> so that it doesnt get picked up by automatic software |
Re: wow what a change
I thought I was in the wrong place http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif I like it http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif
(Edit) I see this one runs from the 1st to Last, not the latest to oldest |

Re: wow what a change
Apart from the wrong order that needs to be corrected http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif, I would prefer visible table borders on the main thread index, and reduced spacing between the table lines - currently the listing has some large gaps between the threads, increasing the need for scrolling while not increasing readability.

Re: wow what a change
Why does EVERY topic, other than the sticky ones, have an animated flame beside it?
|
Re: wow what a change
They are all "hot topics," which seems to be based on number of views... Definitly needs to have an increase in the threshhold, possibly changed to be based on number of replies instead of views...
|
Re: wow what a change
Actually, removal of the hot topic flames is one of the things on Richard's list...they are just too annoying! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif
|
Re: wow what a change
Were they just removed? I don't see them anymore.

Re: wow what a change
ROTFLOL, look at the legend at the bottom........he changed the settings to 100,000 views or 100,000 Posts!

Re: wow what a change
And what happened to the ability to disable the damned Ratings?

Re: wow what a change
Well, I realize this is going to be (has been!) a long work-in-progress, but here's my input:
1) Might want to see if you can use the old UBB code for HTML generation and port it over to the new PHP Version. I'm on dialup for a while, and I remember pages loading quite a bit faster in the older Version. I'm using Firefox right now, I'll be testing in IE in a bit, but there's probably a few streamlining options that are lurking around in the old code. 2) Stylesheets in the profiles are a must, even if it's just a few static ones for font sizes. Decreasing the font size in Firefox makes things more managable, but then it throws off fonts for all other sites if it's made permanent. A suggestion from a webdeveloper standpoint; use pixels for font size in the stylesheets rather than points. Different platforms implement point sizes differently, but pixels are constant across all platforms. In a stylesheet, that would mean using something like "10px" rather than "12pt". Exact numbers depend on the particular font, but I believe 10 pixels is equivalent to 12 point for Arial on IE/Windows platforms. 3) Probably a no-brainer, but might want to run a search across all Posts for the UBB Code text for URLs (I believe it's [URL link=...), and replace it with actual links. And I would take the forum offline for a bit to do it, since it most likely will take a long time and do terrible things to your server http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif 4) The layout in some areas needs a little bit of work. Particularly in the Reply/New Post area, since I'm looking at it right now. Everything is lined up vertically, and there's big beige space to the right of my screen with absolutely nothing on it. 5) Bring back the iframe with the thread in it! It helped a lot when replying to threads. I'm sure I and others will think of more things later. Thanks for all your work Richard and (excuse me while I open up a new tab to check what your wonderful wife's name is since there is no more iframe for me to check it in http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/cool.gif ...)
