Lol, I think we both posted on the same subject, at about the same time TerranC, only mine was in the thread Tesco created about the new forums. That just reverses the list of threads and shows the oldest threads first. It does not change the order that Posts are displayed in when viewing a thread.

Click on My Home. Then Display Prefences. Then find Do you want the preview post screen off or on? Set to No.

No really, I was quite used to the old sort order, and once used to it, I really don't like this post order. I never want to re-read the first post in a thread I am revisiting, but this pretty much makes me re-read old Posts. Being used to the old post order, I hate this order, and I'm feeling irrational urges to do violent things to all the people who used to whine about the "backwards" post order. ARGH!

I have to agree, I just had to create a new post and make it a featured topic in order to keep the newest info on the top. No big deal, but still a minor inconvience.

Actually after you read the thread once and you have read Posts after the fact, it will autoanchor you to the new post. While it is semi-icky, it does make browsing topics you have already looked at, just as easy as before. (Well not just as easy, if you were used to it like I was, but not as ungainly as some other forums).

Nowhere near the ease that it was to read them before. The jump doesn't always work, and you have to wait until the page is completely done loading. With newest Posts first, you can read the newest post, if that is all you need to read, before the page is even done loading. And, the jump to newest is meaningless if you want to read the latest few Posts in a thread a second time later...

Also am I the only one where it seems the site rolls a percentile and on a 1-50 declares the page unavailable. I keep having to redo the pages until it rolls above 50%. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...s/confused.gif

I visited Babylon5 thread. It was an interesting read, first dozen pages, that is. But I really wanted to read the latest Posts. So I clicked "show all". Congratulations on the Forum Update,.. but Yuk! The old forum posting order makes much more sense, the 'Newer' Posts are at the top and quickly viewed. With this new system, you need to click on 'Last page' and if you're lucky all the new Posts are there, but most of the time, there are only a few Posts there and you need to click back a page (or 2) to get all the most recent Posts. I found that the only saving grace right now is the "Show All Posts" button, click it and than hit ctrl+end and jump to the bottom. (But this workaround has a big drawback,.. some of these threads take a day and a half to load due to the number of Posts.

Here's a cheap workaround that we 'Users' can start, when a thread hits 2 pages in length, start a new thread and call it "...thread #2, the thread#3 etc. the number of threads will go way up but at least we won't have to scroll or jump through wultiple pages to find the info we want.

But the best thing would be to get theses forums back to the 'RIGHT" sort order. All the other forums in the world are in the wrong order.

Edit: Sig test results.. Well, I guess the new system does not like imbedding an image within url links. Too bad so sad. I even tried inserting html and that didn't work.

Im sorry. I thought I had already posted in most of the forums (at least in Shrapnel General so I know Im covered) that the change WAS coming, that the order was going to become an OPTION in the Users profile (one of the reasons we shelled out money for this), and that we would regain upload/download capability (dont rush us)

OK, we stopped talking about doing it carefully and trying to edit all the changes ahead of time. We went ahead and threw it at you. Some pros and cons. I must admit that I had not considered broken links. I feel for the Moderators who will need to edit stickies. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif

But the avatars work, the old theme got converted so at least we dont have that shout about color-scheme changes, most of the accesses came across (betas still getting some), the threads survived (THANK GOD!), and the server is still running happy. All in all, as conVersions go, this is a sweet one. (knock on virtual wood)

Now I get to cring at what the addition of <font color="red"> c </font><font color="green">o </font> <font color="yellow"> l</font> <font color="blue"> o </font> <font color="purple"> r </font> buttons is going to do to us. I know it was always possible, but now its easy.

I thought that going to a "community chat" sequence instead of a "customer support forum" sequence was the big reason everyone asked for the upgrade?

The edit window size (and I believe the forum sequence) are part of your personal profile settings. Go ahead and change it.

Hmmm OK everyone needs to go to the "My Home" thing and check out the options they have. One of the things I noticed is that the "email me when Im PM'd" looks like it was turned off. There are other new options you may want to turn on and off also.

This is not the case at all. Certainly, some whiney people on the Dominions Boards did, but most people over here were content with the old order.

The order is NOT an option though. All we can do is change the order that the topics are listed on the pages that display all the topics. Posts within a topic are still displayed in the annoying "oldest to newest" order.

Personally I always did like it the old way but I figured it was just my customer support background.

The poll in the shrapnel forum always stayed fairly equal. most complaints were by new people. However the board format is still being worked on so it might flip around some.

The poll creators didn't care about a balanced result. They never bothered posting a link to it in the SEIV forums. It did not really represent an accurate tally...

The problem is that there is always room to post a complaint, but how often do people start threads to say "I like the sorting order?" Not very often at all. And when people complain, a single post (or poster) of dissention is often sufficent, so not many others bother posting against the complaints.

In the SEIV forums, there has so far been only a single post where someone said they did not mind the new order. No Posts about "I like the new order." All Posts that have mentioned the post order have stated that they prefer the old order.

If you were going to take a vote, the age of a person's profile should modify the worth of their vote based on the average 'churn' for profiles of that age. This would grade teh votes based on the actual chance that the person voting would stick around to complain about the result in the future.

I'd love to meet someone who thinks implementing that would be a good time.

Anyway, forget the newbs, they don't know what's good for them. Please flip the post order back around.

Or give us another chance to vote, another poll. Now that it's actually happenned you might get more telling participation levels.

Takes time to get used to the new look, first glance and first opinion: the old one was better. But maybe I'll get used to this. Page width is out of order, font is too large - I prefer not to scroll endlessly and despite my age I still can read more than 2 lines of letters per screen http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif. Ability to choose the font size by individual preference would be ideal, so the forum could accomodate grandfathers with reading glass allergies and small-print used 24/7 compi-gamers alike http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/cool.gif

i like the way the Posts are now they were in reverse of every other site i've been to but i hate haveing to directly reply to the post instead of just a general reply to the thread plus the continue and then add reply crap

Go into My Home. Then Display Preferences. Find the entry for "Do you want the preview post screen off or on?" Set it to Off. Now, you will be able to make your Posts with one click, rather than having to preview it first.

I'm also very much missing the different symbols for read and unread topics. A major PITA to check every thread just to find out that there are no new Messages.

The new threads are differently colored. Brown means there are new Posts.

In the Replies column, it lists the number of new, unread replies in parenthesis after the number of replies. Also, topics with undread Posts in them have a different background color in the topic list. Unfortunately, the lighter background color is the same for read and undread topics, so that needs fixing.

A number in the column so far to the right where the useless information is that usually is ignored anyway... not good. Also, two different coloured backgrounds for unread topics, for a total of 4 colours: why so complicated if a simple symbol like in the previous board - or in any other good board on the web - does is better? Just making it different for the sake of differences does not mean making it better.

If you want to give as many informations on a quick glance as possible, they need to be as simple as possible. If you can get these informations in a quick glance, without having to start conscious thinking - like, now which 2 colors of the 4 were for new topics?? - it is much quicker and more relaxing to read.

Also, an individual choice between preview or post directly when submitting Messages, like before with 2 simple buttons, is much better than a general preference.

Very true, I just have a bookmark that takes me directly to the SEIV forums. I never visit the other forums at all, so I wasn't aware of a poll going on. Personally (and I know I'm not alone here) I prefer the old order, or latest post first, then going down to oldest.

Say... would by it by chance be possible, if you can't make an option to reverse the thread order for those who liked it that way, to have the link with the topic's name as its caption go not to the first post, but to the first *unread* post, like ezBoard does? There is a brief delay (Depending on your Connection) but after you've visited a thread before, and then revisit it after it has a new post, it will take you to the first unred post and not the very first post in the topic.

I think he meant, it would just automatically take you to the first page with new Posts. It would calculate which page that is on. If there are 17 new Posts and you have it display 15 Posts per page, you have to do math to figure out you need to click on the 2nd to Last page number. Why not have the forum capable of doing this for you?

The new Posts feature does not work in my browser - Mozilla 1.5. No number in parenthesis, no fancy colors. Any suggestions? Does reloading the page not work, do I have to exit the browser (or the page) and reenter?

? I don't think I'm understanding. If you have a thread that has say, 32 Unread Posts, and your post counter is set to show 15 Posts at a time and you've read 1 and there are (31) new. You click on the post name link (Not any number or Show All) and it will go to the page and post of the post Last viewed by you and it doesn't matter what page it's on.

The standard order (ie, the current one, newest Posts on bottom) makes a lot more sense for reading a thread through and is more intuitive: you read top to bottom.

The reversed (old) order did make more sense for long-Lasting threads with only a few Posts on it a day.

Overall though I think I'll actually use the forum more if it stays this way. :P The quickness problem can be solved with a jump to next unread post link, many forums have this feature.

Have you enabled Threaded view Loser? I know that Tesco has, and he is having problems seeing the SEIV forum...
