NEW 12/8 : The SE IV Companion 0.82 Released
THIS IS BETA SOFTWARE, DON'T EXPECT IT TO WORK WITHOUT BUGS!
Released one day ahead of schedule! Release notes: Has during development been tested on: Win XP (Dev enviroment, works best, tested today)) Win 2000 (worked good, tested some time ago) Win NT (Had problems, tested some time ago) Win 9x (Had major problems, tested a long time ago) Known issues in v 0.80 // Today only works with v 1.91 and 1.84, will add earlier Versions in next Version. //?? doesn't always count players left to upload correctly? // OSD blurs text if underlying form is moved. //if Failed to access web page too many times, the PBW scan button might not reappear until app restart. //Sometimes starts another individual game companion than requested //Sometimes shows disabled mods at upstart. // Doesn't remove plug-in box if all plug-ins are disabled, only if the .plg files are deleted. // The Star shaped burning splash screen causes some computers to crash, so it's disabled as default, enable in settings. // Icon alert is not enabled // Proxy support is questionable... (SJ, can you upload it to the right location?) here it is today: http://ruatha.homelinux.org/Companion_080.zip Unpack with directorys. THIS IS A BETA RELEASE!! When in trouble, Go to the SETTINGS -> APPLICATION SETTINGS -> LOG MODE -> DEBUG and provoke the error again, you can also reset log mode to normal and set "Show backstage". If downloads fails, set "Log downloads". Logs can be found in the Companion_resource directory. If it doesn't work for you, POST here why not, complaints without attempting to view the log will be disregarded. A new release will propably take some time but then I'll try to fix all bugs. BTW: The help button is only used for development, don't use it! (The archive is about the same size as ver 0.75, but I think the app is a bit better now) GOOD LUCK! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/cool.gif EDIT: 3 downloads so far and no feedback... good or bad?? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif |
Re: The SE IV Companion 0.80 Beta Released
The companion looks nice but I am having some problems. It will not download my turns. I select which game to download, or it automatically begins to when I first open up, and it comes up and says "Error! Could not download path/to/my/game.zip" I set the thing to debug mode and when I download again it pops up with a box that says "I/O Error 123."
|
Re: The SE IV Companion 0.80 Beta Released
Ok,
And the Download log for that game (Can be found in the Comapnion_resource directory) is empty? Error 123 means ERROR_INVALID_NAME ("The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect."). What is the path and filename, is it strange in anyway, aother drive or? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...es/redface.gif :s :d http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...ies/tongue.gif :| :$ :@ |
Re: The SE IV Companion 0.80 Beta Released
Correct, it is empty.
|
Re: The SE IV Companion 0.80 Beta Released
Excellent, it automatically detects mods, even if I place them in a Mods folder instead of under my SE4 root! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif
Why is it that when I minimize the Companion, it still appears in the corner of the screen as a tiny window as if it were an MDI form? I'm using Windows XP Pro. The program hangs on this message: [28] Found Mod sweetmod2.0lite. Do I have too many mods installed or something? |
Re: The SE IV Companion 0.80 Beta Released
Rags:> I'll make a better download log for the next Version, that will write to the error.
It's something about the path for the downloaded file.. Is there something special with the path? Different drive than the app? Could you post the Path, that way I can set it up on my computer aswell to test it. Ed:> No, there's no limit to the amount of mods. It might be something with the dot in the mod name. Will have to try that. EDIT : NOPE, IT'S NOT THE DOT...Tested.. The minimize thing is soemthing I haven't seen. I use XP Pro aswell. Will have to look into that!. There is the option to minimize to the tray instead, not fully developed but it works. EDIT: THE MINIMIZE TO TRAY DOESN'T OPEN THE POP-UP MENU, CAN'T SEE WHY... It must be something with the minimize to tray function, course now it minimizes to the tray even if I haven't set that setting!! |
Re: The SE IV Companion 0.80 Beta Released
Ed, I think I've found the mod problem.
The Another Sweet mod uses a little variant on the modinfo.txt file. Will adjust to allow a broader variation of modinfo.txt files! The minimize issue is a Last minute change to way I handled minimize to tray... Now I see why it's messed up! These modinfo files have moved the "-" sign to the next line, that's what causing it. Will allow for this in next Version- BTW, ed you can download and owerwrite the current Version with this: http://ruatha.homelinux.org/companion.zip (Only executable, not complete) It should fix the problems. |
Re: The SE IV Companion 0.80 Beta Released
the program just locks up for me
Running xp latest service pack,,, latest Version of se4 it locks up when it asks me to select the Version and starts to do what ever it does... |
Re: The SE IV Companion 0.80 Beta Released
The path to the savegame folder is C:\Program Files\Shrapnel Games\Malfador Machinations\Space Empires IV Gold\Savegame
All my programs for SEIV are on the C drive on my computer so different drive letter is not an issue. Thanks for all your hard work on this Ruatha! |
Re: The SE IV Companion 0.80 Beta Released
ok your new Version works...
cool |
Re: The SE IV Companion 0.80 Beta Released
Tesco, it was the sweet mod that caused it.
Rags: Try this Dl.exe: http://ruatha.homelinux.org/dl.zip unzip to the companion_resource directory. It won't fix it but if the downloadlog is enabled it will write a GAMENAME_DL.LOG file that has actual content even if there is a error (Duh!) If you could do that I'd appreciate it as it could help me fix that problem. This is the fun part, tracking bugs, honestly, I like it. But now off to bed, se ya! |
Re: The SE IV Companion 0.80 Beta Released
New Version:
http://ruatha.homelinux.org/companion_081.zip (same as below with the below updated companion.exe) And Sj, if you uplaod this, also upload this file to the server: http://ruatha.homelinux.org/ver.txt Now really off to bed. |
Re: The SE IV Companion 0.80 Beta Released
Wow Ruatha, you're quick http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif
Hmm, one more bug... I got a new turn notification for a few games but for some reason when I click the "start game" button, it brings up the wrong game! Do I need to start the app with an empty Savegame directory or something - maybe the indexing got messed up? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...s/confused.gif edit: yep, cleaning out my savegame dir did the trick http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif edit 2: ok, how do I get a list of PBW games which are awaiting turns? I know the old Version could do that.... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...s/confused.gif edit 3: OK, now the event editor is crashing when I open it... and there really should be some way of determining what the problem was if Start Game doesn't work properly... bad password, what? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif... and ALSO, the "mod" button on the current game window doesn't work; you can pick a mod but it doesn't change anything. edit 4 (!): OK, how do I tell the program which player I am? I think that's the reason I can't start any games... I tried selecting a player on the dropdown in the current game window, but that didn't affect the "playing as" label... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...s/confused.gif |

2. Hmm, that is a miss by me, there is no list of turns awaiting turns, shall make that. (Am adding a "to Do" button right now) Right now one has to go through the games one by one or set the deadline check. 1.It shouldn't need an empty savegame directory, darned! 3. There is no way I can make the program tell you the reason it doesn't start a program ,sorry. It does display in the info text the time it has run the program and at start the parameters it sends. I could make it pop-up a message with the parameters it has sent if the execution time of the game is under a specific time, say 15 seconds? But it's up to you to decide why it doesn't start! The Mod Button, only gives you the ability to change mod information, enable/disable mods, change mod names etc.. To view the particular games for a specific mod you just click it in the left window in the main screen, where the mods are located, then it "filters" away all games who has another mod. The mod a particular game uses can be seen on a button in the "game panel" on the top at the right. To change mod for a game press taht button. Initially it choosess mod depending upon the savegame directory, savegame directories udner mod directories get that mod, savegame dirs under root gets none mod. To add extra savegame directories press the "Savegame" button above the savegame list. 4. In the "Game info" panel on the right, there is a button with either a player name or a "Unknown player" on, click that and choose a player and then either "set" or "clone" or "cancel". I guess it's the SET you didn't click, it's the same button as the one with the player name, it just changes caption when you're selecting player. Why oh why do the event editor crash?? ED: Check your PM Atleast 27 downloads and only three with bugs http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...s/confused.gif I don't think so.... SJ:> Thanks KNOWN BUGS: UPDATE CHECK DOESN'T WORK in 0.8 and 0.81, IT WORKS FIRST IN 0.82 |
Re: The SE IV Companion 0.80 Beta Released
OK, finally managed to log on to this new-fangled board, here are the bugs I've found/ things I've broken:
1- When i first tried to start it up, it kept hanging. It turned out this was because the (excellent) Nu-Wam had a modinfo file in its folder. I deleted the file and it started up fine. 2- I don't have any savegames in my vanilla folder, only inmodded folders. However, it still insists on displaying those savegames under the _none heading as well as under their proper mods. 3- It detects and downloads new turns using the PBW minibrowser just fine. However, it insists in saving the zip in the same folder as my game exe and unzipping all the files there. 3- It recognises my single-player game as just that, but it still attempts to upload turns from it to PBW. 4- I can't find the PBW scan frequency setting. 5- How about a "download turn now" button, that will download the latest turn immediately whether it thinks you have it already or not? |

EDIT:FIXED, DOESN't HANG ON ILLEGAL MODINFO.TXT FILES 2.BUG. Is there an "ALL" option in the mod screen aswell? There should be, if there's not that's the bug! You can temporary fix it by pressing the "Change Savegame path" for that particular game I hope. I cannot recreate this bug even if I remove my main savegame direcctory. Could you enable the debug log and press a refresh and then send me the log? 3,1: HMM, can you enable the download logs and send me a download log? Has propably to do with the above bug... 3,2. Ahh, the auto uplaod feature, bug, shall be fixed! EDIT:FIXED, CANNOT UPLOAD LOCAL GAMES MANUALLY OR AUTO. 4. In the settings screen, beside the "Alert options" button is the scanner interval, will make more clear. 5. There is one I belive, if you launch the companion for that game, the launch button. There is a Download button. That should always be enabled, If it's not there's a bug! EDIT:FIXES APPLY TO NEXT VER 0.82. DOGSCOFF:> Check your PM!! |
Re: The SE IV Companion 0.80 Beta Released
Fixed a "To Do" button and enabled a list showing all unuploaded games with deadlines and a button to launch that games companion.
Found and fixed bug: If uploaded through main window and game companion wasn't opened, the app crashed. I want to fix the remaining bugs reported in this thread before I release next Version. These are the ones I want to fix primarily: -Ragnaroks Download problem. -Dogscoffs Mod show and download problems. Most other I've been able to fix already. |
Re: The SE IV Companion 0.80 Beta Released
Ruatha,
The new dl file didn't seem to do anything. I still cannot download the files, same error as before. Then in the dl folder found in the companion_resource folder there are not logs. I have logging enabled for downloads but it still creates none. There is a single file in the dl folder called #CPDE_ that is just 1kb in size and I cannot open with any programs. The type of file is just "file." Edit: Just thought I would make known as well that the savegames from all my mods show up in the main screen as well. But I believe you fixed that... |
Re: The SE IV Companion 0.80 Beta Released
Quote:
The CPDE is an error file, a simple textfile, it can be opened in notepad but propably won't contain any worthful info. If download logs are enabled it should make a file with "gamename_turnnumber_dl.log"? i e zeta1_69_dl.log The download logs are created in the Companion_resource directory, not in the Dl directory. The Dl directory should usually be empty, it's a signal from the download program to the companion when it places a file there. If you have debug log enabled, the Companion.log should contain some information, Can you send that to me? It's also in the Companion_resource and is always created, if the program starts, it is created. (Disregarding log mode). All savegames should show up in the main screen. Does the filter function on the left not work? I haven't fixed anything about mods showing, as I don't have any information to go on there. What happens if you choose a filter by clicking on a line in the left modlistbox, ALL, NONE and a mod? |

Ok, no log files even in the root directory. But here is the companion.log file for you to look at.
I deleted everything of the companion and reinstalled it and set it up and still the same errors. And the savegame issue was my fault. I didn't realize I had "all" selected on the left. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...es/redface.gif |

I'll send a new Version shortly with better log capacity, this comp.log gives no clue. EDIT: I got an idea! The #CPDE file didn't have any ending? If you open it with notepad, or send it to me, does it have anything under saved to:? |

Ruatha,
That Last fix did the trick. It is now downloading and unpacking just fine. Thanks for all your work that is going into this. I will let you know if I come across any other bugs that need to be addressed. Thank you again! |

Now I have a new question... I set the companion to come on every time I boot up, so it can keep me up to date with my PBW games. I'm running XP HOme. It works fine when I log on as myself, but when my missus logs onto her account, the companion tries to boot (she doesn't even play se4, and has no interest in the companion except for the nice wedding photo) and throws some wierd error Messages at her. Can you make the auto-start so that it only applies to the current user? ANd now, just to add some balance to this thread which focusses on bugs and errors in the companion (which is wonderdul), I shall sing a short ode in its honour, and perform a happy little jig. *Dgoscoff sings a short ode in honour of the companion (which is wonderdul), and then, predictably, dances a happy little jig. |
Re: The SE IV Companion 0.80 Beta Released
So what are the lyrics of this ode to the Companion?

I shall mak ethe utmost effort in applying the autostart to the current user, the password and other settings are stored for the current user, so it shall show an error message when someone elso logs on, (I hadn't used the autostart option myself, so I hadn't hought of it). Will fix asap. EDIT:Fixed, coming in next ver. |
Re: The SE IV Companion 0.80 Beta Released
I think I know why the event editor crashed, actually... it was probably because I was playing as player zero as I hadn't set a player yet http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...es/redface.gif
|
Re: The SE IV Companion 0.80 Beta Released
It shouldn crash anyway, as player 0 is event edit as host, as player unknown (21) it shouldn't start.
Will fix. Coming soon: 0.82 Added: -Enabled Icon alert. -ToDo list of turns currently not uploaded to the PBW server. -Backup of turn zips and playerfiles, settable amount 0-100 turns. -Now works on ver 1.60, 1.67, 1.78. 1.84 and 1.91 -Flashes task bar button for attention. -A new settings button to set up your PBW site settings at the PBW site(!) -Grabs player number from PBW if no .plr file has been found on the disk. Bugfixes: -Could not parse Sweetmod. -Minimize button didn't work, neither was it possible to maximize if minized to tray. -Download logs didn't log on error. -Hung if illegal Modinfo.txt was found. -Autorun made app autostart at all Users, now only on user basis. -Didn't accept PBW usernames/passwords with spaces. -Allowed uploads of local games to PBW, even tried to autoupload some. -If Downloads failed, dl.exe wouldn't stop, now times out after 20 minutes. -Crashed when attemptinmg to check for updates. |
Re: The SE IV Companion 0.80 Beta Released
Oh, I found the button that lets you select a player - it was marked "Host" and I didn't click it because I was afraid it would host a turn! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...es/redface.gif
Maybe that button needs to be relabeled? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif Edit: Any reason I can't get a combat replay in any of my games? Are the files not being extracted from the zip archive? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif |
Re: The SE IV Companion 0.80 Beta Released
It should unpack all files.
Try deleting the old .cmb file and see if it unpacks the new one. Or enable download logs and check the download log for that game, it should say that it unpacks the .cmb file and where it puts the files. I see no reason that it shouldn't unpack the .cmb file... (perhaps a bug?) About the button, I'll make a hint for it. If it finds a gam file but no .plr file it chooses "Unknown player". I fit finds a PBW turn but no files it chooses host. I'll make it try to grab playernumber from PBW aswell instead of choosing host. |
Re: The SE IV Companion 0.80 Beta Released
New Version 0.82:
0.82 Added: -Enabled Icon alert. -Shows Last scantime in Gamecomp. -Eventedit would crash if started as host, now cannot start as host. Can be found here for now: (For future updates, use the apps inbuilt update check!) http://ruatha.homelinux.org/companion082.zip Tomorrow is the IRC chat wit Aaron, make sure to press the IRC Setup button to be able to join that, you don't need any special info to set up IRC, just press it and check the show and use IRC boxes and perhaps later on the join button to join the channel! Sj when you upload it to the imagemod server, upload this aswell (new Version) http://ruatha.homelinux.org/ver.txt The ver.txt file is what the app checks for to see if there is a new update availible. (so far 32 downloads of previous Versions 0.8-0.81 from my server, not counting imagemod server) EDIT: Known issues: -IRC reconnects at closure of settings screen, fixed in v 0.83 -IRC reconnects when maximizing from minimized state, fixed in ver 0.83 -In next Version: Deleted the "autorun-game" radiogroup from main window to lessen clutter. |

EDIT: Just found a new (but fairly inconsequential) bug: On a fresh install go to the options screen, then click the IRC options button. Now click "cancel" repeatedly, only clicking OK to the "select channel to join" screen. Now go back to the main screen and try to join IRC. It messes thing right up... |
Re: The SE IV Companion 0.80 Beta Released
I've fixed the IRC bug when quitting settings screen in ver 0.83, see your PM, there's the first in the DOGSCOFF series plugins aswell, is it what you thought of?
Click on a file in the left( Forgot all labels...) to see the pictures, check those you wish to copy and press copy. |
Re: The SE IV Companion 0.80 Beta Released
(For future updates, use the apps inbuilt update check!) ??
I must be blind, I cannot see any button to 'update the program' Help! (I think a v0.83 is available now right? Cheers! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif |
Re: The SE IV Companion 0.80 Beta Released
David, go to the settings screen and then to the application settings screen. In there is a check box saying "check for update at application start" just check the box and away you go. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif
|
Re: The SE IV Companion 0.80 Beta Released
Ok, I went there, did that, but it doesn't appear to do anything at startup. Aside from telling me it has been started up xx times.
Oh well, perhaps the v0.83 is not up yet. Cheers! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif |
Re: The SE IV Companion 0.80 Beta Released
Nope, no 0.83 yet.
Will finish the plug-in pack first so that i know that the companion can send all needed parameters. So far one plug-in is finished. Whne the new Version appears at the imagemod server the app vill alert you at startup and give you a link to download from. |
Re: The SE IV Companion 0.80 Beta Released
Dogscoff plug-in pack:
Finished Plug-ins: Race copier: =========== Can browse all the races in the main SE4 directory and create empty race dirs in the mod dirs so that the mods can use the shipsets. You choose wich races to copy. (Dogscoff: -Option to create empty race folders in mod directory - ie I have a shipset in pictures/races/vikings but in order to use the shipset in adamant mod I need an empty adamant/pictures/races/vikings folder.) In work: Cleaner: ======== Checks all race direcotires and suggests files to delete, checks all AI files and checks if they are 1.91 compliant, if not choose to alert or fix automaticly. (Dogscoff: -Option to scan pictures/races and subfolders and delete any superfluous copies of the styletester program: It's easy to end up with many redundant copies of this eating up your HD space. Some ppl might want a copy in each and every race folder, so there should be an option to copy it in, too. -Scan through All race AI files automatically and either flag up or fix all those missing lines that generate annoying error Messages in-game. I imagine this would be a pain to implement in a program that supports several Versions of SE4.) Planned: Shipsetcheck: ============ (Dogscoff: -(Not sure if this is possible) Option to look at your PBW games (either from the website or the saegame files) and determine what race styles you need to download.) Not sure what you mean, I'll need help on these: (Dogscoff: -scan all the general.txt AI files and look for missing dsgnname files, then copy them to mod subfolders where appropriate, and create a list of files that need to be found and downloaded. -Race-style browser. (including an option to spit out a list of which installed mods and races are fully or partially neo-standard compliant or neo++ compliant, perhaps with some kind of races/mod compatibility table spit out at the bottom, so you can see which shipsets will look best under which mods.)) No way http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif : (Dogscoff: -(This one is really way out, and would probably require some kind of server somewhere, I think) Option to somehow scan the readme.txt, credits.txt and modlancher files of races and mods to determine what Version is currently installed. Then it either connects to a central server (and/or the SotAS site) or it searches for a URL in the local readme files and tries to determine whether a more up to date Version is available, then downloads, unzips and installs it. ) |

Re: NEW 12/8 : The SE IV Companion 0.82 Released
I'd rather have it at the imagemod server, that's where it belongs. So when it get's there I'll close my server.
|
Re: NEW 12/8 : The SE IV Companion 0.82 Released
Why does it belong there? What is wrong with Shrapnel?
|
Re: NEW 12/8 : The SE IV Companion 0.82 Released
I'ts easy to have the same link to the ver.txt that the app checks for updates.
