New Project: a Player Guide: basic and expert!
Hi all,
from an idea of boron, I'll try during my holidays to start writing a dom2 players guide, both for newbies and expert players ... I would like also to include in each chapter something of thematic to make the reader feel in the game (like in the new D&D games) ... I have to ask some permissions before starting: Is there any problem if I include in the manual something taken from the original manual ? Is there any problem if I include in the manual stuffs taken from other documents avaible in the net (if someone don't want to see his matyerial in my guide, please drop me an email) ? Is there any problem if I include in the manual description taken from AAR thereads ? Anyway, I'll try to do it for people in my game-club (just to make addicted of dom2 like me) and I'll pubblish it on the net if devs and other players will agree ... finally, if is there someone interested in the project, when I'm bavk form holiday I'll send him some chapter (just to make evident the 'style') and he will be welcome to collaborate to the project. good play Liga |
Re: New Project: a Player Guide: basic and expert!
Perhaps you should look at what Ironhawk and I have written:
http://benatar.snurgle.org:8080/~quinn/guide.html It isn't finished yet, and contains some errors, and Ironhawk wrote some things I don't agree with, and probably vice versa http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif But it is a good start and maybe we shouldn't duplicate effort. Or, maybe you are looking to do something either more or less detailed, or more focused on rules vs. ours which is more about strategy, in which case go ahead. The more resources there are the better http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif |

my "very ambitious" project is to be able to have a manual that: 1. first reading by newbies to get into the game (the feeling and the basic rules) 2. reading by expert to get more informations about the rules ("how that work ?") 3. reading by newbies/expert to have some hints about strategies ... I would like to allegate to the manual also some usefull charts (like the QR from Zen) in a way to have a manula that could be usefull also as a guide during you game ... ... sure that project is too much big for one persone and I would like to have help (expecially in writing the strategy parts). good play Liga |

revising the manual is more time consuming i thought though lol |
Re: New Project: a Player Guide: basic and expert!

-strategic considerations/evaluations -clam hoarding -castling -indirect warfare and basic newbie guides with my playstyle for the following nations : -pan cw -abysia -arco -ryleh -ermor edit : oh and i think on bloodhunting/sitesearching i could write a little guide too. |

of course I'll keep out in the moment all the specific spell becouse I'm sure that the Zen QR on spells will see the light one of this days! Liga Ps. if you can send me something before tommorrow afternnon I'll bring it with me in holiday! |
Re: New Project: a Player Guide: basic and expert!
If you Email me certain parts you want feedback or help with strategy on and hound me with persistant nudges I can offer some help with strategy. I do have a mostly completed "Strategies by Nation/Theme" that I've been picking at all these months that I can just cut and paste and modify based on all the patches to whatever you are trying to create Liga.

Re: New Project: a Player Guide: basic and expert!
I think this project would become the Dom2 Strategy Encyclopedia. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif
Someone could spend $5 to register a name like Dom2Encyclopedia.com.. domclopedia.com? dom2faq.com? 2dom2faq? (Hmmm other ideas deleted as inappropriate for a public board.) Anyway it would be a good place to try and collect all of the strat guides done by all of the people. |

Re: New Project: a Player Guide: basic and expert!
Wow ... a lot of idea and collaborations ... about the wiki it could be nice, I could try to read how to do it and try when I'll be back.
At the moment (during my holidays) I'll try to write something, about some of the rules and after that I'll post it to everyone would like to partecipate in the projct, just to have an idea of what I'm trying to do ... I'll let out all the sections concerning strategies (taht I hope you could fill) becouse I'm not really a good player and I think my strategies are not the best! thank you and send me as much as you can by email at liga(AT)treemme(DOT)org so I know what there is to do and what is already done! good play to all Liga |
Re: New Project: a Player Guide: basic and expert!
Great idea guys! Thanks for working on this. I'm looking forward to the conclusion of Boron's "domes/strategic attacks" guide as well.
Thanks in advance, and keep us posted on how it's going and display your working copies once in awhile. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif Thx, John |

Re: New Project: a Player Guide: basic and expert!
I'm starting writing down the structure of teh guide ... since it must be, at first, a newbies help, I'm thinking about organize it in section like the game menus ... so:
Part 1: The Game 1. Creating a God 2. Creating a Gmae 3. Playing a Game -3.1 The top right Menu (I have to find something better) -3.2 The mid right menu (I have to find something better) --3.2.1 Province Info --3.2.2 Army Setup --3.2.3 Mercenary --3.2.4 Recruting Units -3.3 Buildings and Magic Sites -3.4 Province Description --3.4.1 Nation Details ---3.4.1.1 Tresury ---3.4.1.2 Income ---3.4.1.3 Upkeep --3.4.2 Province Details ---3.4.1.1 Population ---3.4.1.2 Income and Resources ---3.4.1.3 Unrest ---3.4.1.4 Taxes ---3.4.1.5 Supplies ---3.4.1.6 Corpes ---3.4.1.7 Dominion --3.4.3 Province defence -3.5 Leader and Units -3.6 Processing the Turn 4. Network Games 5. Preference I skip map edit Part 2: Details 1. Races and Themes 2. Pretenders (I'm not really sure about that) 3. Dominion (using most of the nice Ceremony work) 4. Battles ... It still under work but I think in that way coule be easy to find the informations good play Liga |
Re: New Project: a Player Guide: basic and expert!
At the moment I have cought some screenshots that could be usefull for the guide ... I'll keep putting all the material for the guide in
http://arrakis.unimo.it/~ligabue/dom2/docs/new-manual/ as soon as I got it good play Liga |
Re: New Project: a Player Guide: basic and expert!
I'd like to help contribute, if that would be helpful. I would be particularly interested in
- contributing information for "newbie" orientation ("from newbies to newbies") - helping to tweak some language usage if the need for a native speaker should rear its head great idea liga! |
Re: New Project: a Player Guide: basic and expert!
Any kind of help is welcome ... as you have noticed english is not my native language ... I could write quickly in a bad english ... it will take me a lot of time (sometimes close to the age of the univerese) to write a good english ... so, if you could check and improve the text in the guide you will be welcome.
I'll post the starting Version of the Guide when I'll be back from holidays and than we could try to work together to make it better. Also your efforts for newbies for newbies sections will be great ... I must admit you was one of the lights shining in my newbies days ... finally it could be really nice to have someone (Kristoffer??) involved in making a short chapter about the history of the World before the Ascension Wars ... something could be inferred reading races and thems description but it will be great to put all in a chapter ... thank uou and good play Liga |
Re: New Project: a Player Guide: basic and expert!
Liga, as I did for your manual addenda doc, I'm willing to help you with editing. Feel free to send me whatever you need tweaked as an email attachment (as you did with the addenda's raw .RTF).

Re: New Project: a Player Guide: basic and expert!
This is a great project Liga !!!
I've looked at the screenshots, and perhaps it's not a good idea to use non-standard skins/flags ? It might very well confuse a newbie if the graphics doesn't corresponde EXACTLY to the standard out-of-the-box Illwinter look. And I hope that Kristoffer will share some of his thoughts on the history of the dom2 world. By the way, is there a map that reflects the "original" dom2 world with all the nations in the "proper" places etc ? |

... and Arryn, of course I would like your help ... the revision you have made of the manual addenda was excellent ... as soon as I have something ... I have put in the http://arrakis.unimo.it/~ligabue/dom2/docs/new-manual folder an example of the manual, both in world and open-office formats ... Liga |
