Calling God Back

Can anyone tell me if there is a forumula for how much priest power is necessary to call your God back?

TIA,

Thufir

Priest levels of all priests calling him back are summed together. When this sum exceeds or equals 40, he returns.

Perfect - that's just what I need to know! Thanks.

A more accurate statement is when the sum is greater than or equal to 40 level-turns the god returns. Endo's statement implies that nothing happens until you reach a "critical mass" of 40 levels, which isn't true. A L2 priest, alone, can call god and take 20 turns to succeed. The more priests you throw at the call, the faster god returns.

Arryn is correct, that is exactly how it works. Each turn's worth of priests is added to those already finished with the task. This is important if you are a high priest race, such as Pythium, which has mage/priests.

You do not want to put every Pythium priest on calling god when he dies. You just put 20 level 2 priests on it and you get your god back in one turn. The other priests can continue to do other tasks.

why would you have 20 level 2 priests lying around, unless youre fighting ermor?

Well, in Pythiums case their level 2 priests are the cheapest researchers, so you might have quite a few of them in order to boost your research level. There's other races whose mages are also priests - I think the designers have done this as much to give certain races more economical research and cheaper access to mages as much as for thematic reasons.

while theurg acolytes only cost 90, and have a reasearch of 6 under 3 magic, real thueurgs are only 150 for a research of 9, which is something like 90% as efficient (higher, of course, if magic is less than 3). Given how much more combat power a theurg wields, I end up almost exclusively buying them, and only having a very few acolytes for menial tasks.

In the case of Serpent Cult Pythium, ALL national mages are also priests. SC Pythium is probably the single best killer of AE or SG Ermor in the game.

?? how you figure?

base pythium is surely the best killer of undead.

Re: Calling God Back

Regular theurgs, being holy-3, also happen to excel at calling god. So in either case it is likely that the pretender will be resurrected sooner rather than later, which is the actual point...

Re: Calling God Back

Since Priests dispel undead, how many would you suggest against 1060 undead units hanging out in a fortress? (I already have a large number of archers, but doubt their morale can handle even a single attack round...I can't bust the fortress down yet... any ideas on that, either?) This is all against the AI. Ermor doesn't factor into the large game anymore, I just want to destroy that stupid army spawn point....sorry if I'm off subject

Re: Calling God Back

Depends on the type of undead, and how long the priests have. Banish doesn't hurt living troops at all, so if you have a large horde of living troops to stall the undead, and you are fighting Ashen Empire where banishment does some good, you can probably get by with 8-10 or so.

If you are fighting Soul Gate, and don't have too many troops on your own side, things don't look so good. You'll probably be better off with some other approach.

Re: Calling God Back

Like preaching him out. If he's only got that one province left, why haven't you built temples in every adjacent province and put 20 priests on "preach" in the fortress province itself?

Of course, if it's AE and you have 20 priests, you'll just go in and banish him (that's once you've taken down the walls with gate cleavers et al.). If it's SG then this is certainly the way to go. Nobody's dominion can survive being totally surrounded with temples and preached to death ....

Re: Calling God Back

You hit the nail on the head, magnate.

I recall one of my very first SP games where I tried three times to take the Abysian AI capitol against a powerful pretender and got whipped each time.

I then changed strategy and took all AI provinces before sitting on his capitol with my army. I didn't even have to build any temples. Just 4 priests preaching in various provinces and it was over at once. His dominion simply went poof!

That was one lesson I doubt I will ever forget.
