Yep, texturing is a tedius job! And with my suggestion, going to be even worse http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...s/rolleyes.gif.

I like the color combo but it's too much purple on the one ship. What I think would look good would be purple markings/striping/highlights to set it off a bit. (but I know that's tough).

And grey/purple is one of my favorite combos so I may be a bit partial to using those 2 colors on a ship.

Yes, they are, which is why I stole them, kind of.

I thought people would like the second one better; new textures instead of those old DoGA textures, I guess I was wrong. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif

Again, TC, the 2nd one's textures are better. It is the specific color combination that is bad...

Re: Texture comparison

I'd have to say I like both of them. I'm not sure which is 'better' though. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif Each has some of the qualities needed to make an 'ideal' ship texture.

The 'plain' grey one does look like a more realistic color scheme for a spacecraft, but the dark grey/purple one is much more detailed and that gives it a 'real' feel as well. The lighting is better, too. Can you introduce more contrast into the grey one? The nose ought to darken on the side away from the light source just like it does on the second one.

If you could increase the lighting/shading effects on the grey one, and possibly add some more detail -- if the shading effect isn't what brings that out -- I think that would be best. Maybe if you convert the 'purple' parts of the second one to the same dark grey as the main body of the ship...

Re: Texture comparison

On the second one, I think the glossiness and blue mottle of the missile pods (or whatever those side things are) just don't go with the drab gray of the main hull. How about taking the blue and applying it more uniformly over the missile pods, and making the sheen consistent, either glossy or not, over the entire ship?

Re: Texture comparison

TC said,.."I know that there's a few people here who knows how to make some good textures from scratch; to those people, how can you add windows to a texture? (specifically, using photoshop 6?)"

Not a simple task, to get the windows in the right place the model needs a UV map and with this you can paint in the window glows manually. A second option is to create a small rectangle box and scale it down to the size you want. then give it a 'glowing' texture perhaps making it semi transparent and placing a light source inside it. then manually duplicate this and placing the box along the hull where you want the windows. The other way is to manually paint them on the finished rendering. Hard to make them look like part of the rendered ship.

Cheers! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif

The image does not appear in your post, but when I quoute, I see the url... (I added the spaces). You need to use forward slashes, not back slashes, in the URL. I get a 404 error when using the (corrected) URL. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif

Re: Texture comparison

I don't want this to be taken the wrong way, Fyron, so please don't (we so often seem to get confused at each other's responses).

So, help me out here. Why does it display for me without any problem? Alneyan has complained of the same thing. Could it be because you and he use a different browser than IE and "it" isn't as tolerent?

I want to post it so it can be read, obviously.

Thanks for any explanation you can offer. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Re: Texture comparison

URLs should never have back-slashes in them "\". It is wrong (well, there might be a few cases of weird scripting Languages using "\" as part of a function call, but for normal URLs, bad). All slashes must be forward-slashes "/", as per the standars set forth for URL structure. IE apparently has yet another hack which breaks the rules and allows "\" to be used. This problem arises from IE being used as the file manager shell in the recent Versions of Windows... Standards-compliant browsers do not accept "\" in URLS. This is the correct URL address of the image, which will work in all graphical internet browsers:

http://se4-gaming.net/images/ship.jpg

Now, I may have had a typo in the URL when I fixed the slashes and tried to view the image manually, as it was not appearing Last time I tried. It will load fine now, in a new window with a corrected URL.

Re: Texture comparison

Thanks, Fyron, for the explanation. Must be IE's allowances. I'll try to remember that in the future.

For "old time sake", I'll mention a pet peeve of mine (well, that's because I'm old and remember these things):

All the time at work (working in IT), I hear people say "forward slash" and "back slash". Before computers came about, there was only the "slash". When computers (and paths) became an everyday word, people felt the need to call a slash a "forward slash". I've always maintained that there is a "slash" and a "back slash". Of course, this reference is not half as bad as this one (that I hear all the time!): a "forward backslash" http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/rant.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/shock.gif.

Re: Texture comparison

Now, the purple in that image looks good... it was the combination of dark grey and darker purple, with huge massive parts purple and huge parts grey, that was bad... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

Just a comment...

I have LOTS of respect for people who will go through all the trouble for all the componets to make a shipset and "give" it away.

Considering that, I hesitate to make comments because I'm too lazy myself to do stuff like that. On the other hand, I don't want to let people who are doing that kind of work think than hardly anyone is paying attention, so I try to give my opinion when I "feel" something.

That ship you see there won't be a part of a shipset. Would you like to see a ship that will?

I was just taking in general about people who design shipsets. Not sure if TC is looking to do that but it seemed like an appropriate spot to mark my appreciation for those people who DO spend the time to make a shipset.

"Shiney"?

LOL...you sound almost like a Firefly fan. I hopped on this because I will be doing the following at Dragon*Con this year:

(1) This weekend, meeting to help build a Firefly float for the parade at Dragon*Con;
(2) Manning the Firefly booth to promote the show on Sunday (of the Con);
(3) Donated $50 for printed materials for the "effort";
(4) Wifey and I spent over $250 for her to dress like Zoe and be in the parade.

There is a small select group headed by a guy here in Atlanta and a lady from Florida helping make "Firefly" become a part of Dragon*Con for years to come. So far, if you are familiar with the short-lived series, Nathan Fillian (Mal), Kaylie (Jewel Staite), and Jayne (Adam Baldwin) are coming and our group hopes to have a close and personal meeting with them (SO KEWL!). But, who knows.

Anyway, I will be sure to post pics of D*C like I did Last year.
