Rock you like a Hurricane Sale

Umm... isn't this particular banner ad in somewhat poor taste?

I agree... switch to Mozilla Firefox and use the AdBlock plugin to eliminate nasty ads like that...

Well, it's flashy and gets your attention... I guess advertisements are supposed to grab people's attention, so it's working. It's distracting though... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

I agree with Spoo; shrapnel could have picked a better slogan, or a better time to use that slogan rather than using it right now and here when the 2004 hurricane season will apparently be worst one in 88 years.

Well, living in Florida, it sure got my attention. I think it's a bit too much, especially if you've been living under the gun for the past month. But I checked it out and I'm going to order Raging Tiger. Maybe in the future they'll be more tactful in the name of their sales.

...and by that you mean?

I must agree, the name for this sale could have been better, or at least used at a different time.

And when someone makes a plugin to block the new stuff? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...ies/tongue.gif Actually giving the obnoxious marketing angles taken by certain sites already, I'd be surprised if there wasn't one out there.

There is always The Proxomitron for protection against more invasive ads...

Well that is the way it tends to go isnt it? Surely people have seen it elsewhere. Banner ads go up, someone says "get this to not see the ads", so something else appears on the page, some other recommendation, which spurs something else.

Re: Rock you like a Hurricane Sale

Is something wrong with leaving people that don't want to view ads all the time alone? They are a fairly small portion of the audience, and all that you are doing is annoying them... You do not increase sales any by using more invasive ads, as the people that are wont to block ads will not be clicking on them anyways...

Must you always bicker http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif
Image banners generally aren't worth the trouble to block anyhow. It's when a site starts puttin up flash ads that I get cranky and vindictive and start blocking ads. Grrr, you hear that GP? Don't dare allow a flash ad to intrude upon our hallowed forums!

And yes. It is indeed in bad taste!

I second that Sivran; I went so far as to shut down Flash from my computer just because it gave birth to the most annoying ads to have ever seen the daylight. Anybody actually able to navigate on Gamespy (and related sites) should receive a Medal of Gallantry.

Flash ads are the spawn of the devil himself. They are completly counter-productive as advertising. The second they take over my screen my every energy is only dedicated to finding out how to close them and get them off my screen. If I even spare the few brain cells nececsary to register what product or service they are pushing, it only to make a mental note to never buy it if I can avoid it in the future.

Banner ads and text I don't mind. They are like billBoards on the highway. If I want I can ignore them. At times they are plesant to look at and break up the monotony. Occasionally they might even catch my interest enough to "take that exit" and check them out.

Flash ads on the other hand are the equivalent of salesmen jumping in my car while I'm driving down the road and sticking their wares in my face as I drive. Most heinous.

Get Moz or Firefox http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif Then you'll be able to say goodbye to flash and pops taking over your screen http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...ies/tongue.gif

Re: Rock you like a Hurricane Sale

I bought a $10 disk at Wal-Mart that's supposed to block pop-ups. It does a pretty good job of it.

Fyron September 20th, 2004 02:20 PM

Re: Rock you like a Hurricane Sale

The Proxomitron does an excellent job, and it is 100% free. Firefox with the AdBlock extension also does a good job against invasive ads, and it is also 100% free.

Re: Rock you like a Hurricane Sale

It's kind of a vicious circle isn't it? You start blocking banners and pop-ups, and so the advertisers bounce back with new and more evasive ways to get their ads to show up and then you get new programs to block them and then the ad guys come up with something even worse...

Going back to the original subject, I'm just surprised no radio stations down here played that old Scorpions tune, "Rock You Like A Hurricane". I haven't heard that tune in a long time. I'll have to search for my Best of Scorpions cd and play it.
