Storm Generation
Is there any way to make different types of storm, other than the sensor interference ones?
I was playing my first full game, and with enemy DN's flowing through a wormhole next to my planet to run up against my 250 Organic missile sats. Things were getting dicey, so I build a storm generation ship, and tried to make protective storms around the wormhole. Every storm was the same, just an anti-sensor storm. Is it possible to mod a storm generator that makes shield damaging storms, turbulence storms, etc randomly? Or at least a separate component for each special type? I want to make storms, and have some of them with special abilities like the natural storms. |
Re: Storm Generation
When a storm is created it is a "random storm." The components.txt file says
Ability 1 Type := Create Storm Ability 1 Descr := Will create a random storm of any size. for the Ionic Concussion BLaster If you look in the StellarAbilityTypes.txt you will see there are four different types of "normal storms." You could modify this file so that you get a higher chance of specific storms. I don't if you can do this after the game has started, however. Hope this helps. |
Re: Storm Generation
I had my ship sit there, creating storm after storm.
Having built and destroyed 20, many looked different, but all had the same ability (hides ships). |
Re: Storm Generation
What happens if you try to create a storm in a sector that already has a storm in it? Maybe the effects "stack" somehow.
|
Re: Storm Generation
I suspect the damage & shield disrupting effects would stack sequentially, but the others just hide your ship.

Re: Storm Generation
That's what I was trying to suggest: maybe creating a storm in an empty sector makes a "Type 1" storm, creating a storm in a Type 1 sector makes a Type 2, and so on up to Type 4.

Re: Storm Generation
Like I said, I had 20 storms stacked at one point, and they were all basic sensor blockers.

Re: Storm Generation
I think all storms obscure ships.
There are other storm abilities that cause damage but I don't know if you can create them. In the abilities file under Create Storm there are no values given. I don't know if you can add to abilities if none are given. |

Suicide Junkie was playing his first full game... how times fly!

Re: Storm Generation
Wow... whatever happened to some of those people down there?
Dunno why but I saw the thread topic and thought S_J was treating us to some fanfic. "Storm Generation" would be a cool title for a story, about, umm... a generation of people... uh... who have... something to do with a storm..? |
Re: Storm Generation
Good God! The Holy Grail of Posts! Bear witness to SJ's report on his first full game! Amazing.
Slick. |

Re: Storm Generation
I ran a simulation on this kind of defence a year ago... I creted a storm generating ship and ordered it to create storms one on top of the other... it worked fine and the storms had different-random "abilities" upon creation. Turbulence, shield damage, sensor interference, "harmless" etc. etc.
I also had several fleets ready and sent them into the storms and found that about 30 storms stacked are enough to damage an incomming fleet almost for sure (say 80-100% probability) But the really weird thing I found out was that the more ships the fleet had the more likely it was for it to get damaged... the effect really showed itself from say 3 ships and up to 10 ships... then it "evened-out" and the prob. didn't increase if you had say a 20 ships fleet compared to say 10-15 ships fleet. But this kind of defence isn't as easy in 1.91 anymore...as if I read the history.txt correctly it says that it isn't possible to create more than one storm per turn...
