MP Game - Faerun Pirates

I hope everyone had a nice Talk Like a Pirate Day (Sep. 19).

There is a house rule limiting players to 20 of each kind of gem producing item and ten soul contracts, but that probably won't affect many people.

Everyone is welcome to join.

Large or small Faerun? I'd be interested in taking Vanheim.

Re: MP Game - Faerun Pirates

The game is on the Mosehasen server: ipadr dom2.mosehansen.dk port 2319

You are welcome to join, Navar, but are you sure you can handle Mictlan? It is a little more complicated than the other nations because of the way Mictlan's dominion is spread.

I would like Pythium and this would be my first MP game, so also if someone else wants it I wouldn't mind taking something else.

Re: MP Game - Faerun Pirates

As far as I'm concerned, we can start right now. Pangaea being missing does give Ermor a bit of extra edge if we're playing with the fixed start locations, and the lack of T'ien Chi, Abysia and C'tis give the eastern nations, but especially Jotunheim a lot of expansion room.

If we're playing with random start locations, that won't be so much of a problem, but then I'll be screwed...

Re: MP Game - Faerun Pirates

After Newbiegame3, there's no other word for this than "Masochistic", but count me in for T'ien Ch'i. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

If we went to random starting positions, then I'd prefer to have Abysia, but I really would rather not do that w/ fixed starting positions. And, Edi, why would you say you'll be screwed if it's random? Of course you know this map better than anyone, but as I recall the starting for Vanheim on the large Faerun, it wasn't all that great a starting position, anyhow.

I should be able to get my pretender up by midday tomorrow (Pacific time), although if we do decide to go w/ random positions, I'd like to know that before uploading.

Edi September 23rd, 2004 04:27 AM

Re: MP Game - Faerun Pirates

Actually, Vanheim's starting position is relatively good (unless the game assigns all of the provinces there as small ones, which would crimp income). It's safe from immediate attack from all but Atlantis and/or CotS Marignon, and they have sailing troops. The Dwarven Smiths are kind of stuck on the islands, but that's a minor tradeoff. I'm not experienced in playing Vanheim at all, so I thought I might as well try.

Then again, if my assumptions turn out wrong (I've never tried Vanheim on either Faerun map), I'll be getting my just desserts, no?

Well, I'd vote for fixed positions, in any case. I think other than Abysia, they work out pretty well, anyhow. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

I don't see an option for fixed/random start locations on the Moshansen page. We could choose a different map or fill in the blank spots with hard AIs.

Also, any preferences on common/rare random events?

We are going to start in about 24 hours, so express your opinions now.

Edi September 23rd, 2004 05:08 AM

Re: MP Game - Faerun Pirates

Common random events, please.

Random locations or not, all the same really. At least nobody will start out on the islands in a random location game, because they are all #nostart provinces. I don't know if Mose's server applies the #specstart provisions of the map file automatically, if it does, we will have fixed, if not, ah well...

And if it is indeed a random start game, one water nation and a couple of land nations missing won't be that bad. I'm looking forward to getting stomped as Vanheim...

Edi

Thufir September 23rd, 2004 12:33 PM

Re: MP Game - Faerun Pirates

As Edi, I think common events would be best.

I believe mosehansen defaults to using fixed starting positions (at least that's what happened with Boron's newbiegame3).

We are now just missing 3: Atlantis, Pangaea and C'tis. I'm ambivalent on filling those with AIs, but if we do have AIs, then they should be set to impossible. Hard AIs are still quite easy to defeat, and the victor gains the gold and gem income from the capital, which is quite a benefit.

Krootish September 23rd, 2004 04:52 PM

Re: MP Game - Faerun Pirates

I'd also be in favor of common random events

Tyrant September 23rd, 2004 05:42 PM

Re: MP Game - Faerun Pirates

I'd prefer the fixed positions and common randoms as well.

Since we are so close to full I'd say let's wait a bit, but if others are chomping at the bit I don't mind starting.

Thufir September 23rd, 2004 06:50 PM

Re: MP Game - Faerun Pirates

It would be great to fill the C'tis position - I think that fills the biggest blank spot, but I also don't mind starting.

Bale_Blackmoon September 23rd, 2004 07:08 PM

Re: MP Game - Faerun Pirates

I have no opinion on any of this being to new to even vaguely know the map. If the starting positions are fix, if anyone has advice onm mine i'll take it, but if not trial by fire is cool too. BURN THE WITCH!

Lingchih September 23rd, 2004 07:52 PM

Re: MP Game - Faerun Pirates

If it's still open when I get home, I'll take c'tis. I don't care for them much, but I just got my butt kicked and I need a new game. Which Faerun map is it... faerun large or faerun small?

Catquiet September 23rd, 2004 08:19 PM

Re: MP Game - Faerun Pirates

It's the large Faerun map.

We will start once Lingchih uploads a pretender with impossible AIs for whatever nations are left unfilled.

If y'all have a plan to move towards 48QH at a reasonable turn, I'll come in as Pangaea.

Well if you donīt mind to take a newbie, playing his first multiplayer game, Iīd take atlantis.
I beat the demo vs 5 difficult ais in 40 turns though, so I at least know how to move armies http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif.

Well I uploaded my pretender. Hope it will be a fun game.

So it would appear my pretender has been replaced by a plain frost father with no upgrades anywhere. Now this being my first mp game I was expecting to be defeated pretty hard anyway, but this is a bit curious. Any ideas on what caused this, I wouldn't be surprised if it was my screwup somehow or a bug on my end, but I don't have much of a clue.

Was there a pretender in place (either yours or someone else's) before you uploaded? There is a bug (or limitation) in that if you upload over an existing pretender, it gives you the impression that you have changed pretenders when in fact, you have not.

Thanks for the reset.

Re: MP Game - Faerun Pirates

Why a reset? There's a known issue where people sometimes have to try to reconnect over and over. If odd_enuf was able to upload his pretender (which he was), then it wasn't the port or the game.

I think Krootish was being imprecise, he was likely saying thanks for the recreation of the game, as his pretender was hosed in the original.

On second thoughts, I should be reasonable for once and not sign up for a new game; especially when I am not sure I will be able to play for long (due to a volatile TCP/IP connection).
