Poll: What do you like most about SEIV??

Well, be honest. What's kept you hooked for years, or if you're new, what's attracted you to this great game?? If you feel like it, expand on your poll answer by posting here, if you don't feel like it, let the poll speak for you. Hope I don't miss too many big options.

(By the way, I voted for the Last option http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif )

Can I select all? Just to be goofy...

Well, really, I like the community. I'm actually not that active in playing the game anymore.

Ditto. I played a bit during the whole week I was home this summer, that's about it for the past year and a half pretty much.

I don't play SEIV as much as I used to. But the fun part is coming up with new strategies, ways to improve ship designs, optimizing the economy etc. I have finished only a few games of SEIV ever, because I keep starting new games.

Usually, I start a new game either when my empire is so far ahead that I know I'm going to win and it gets boring, or if I'm stuck in a stalemate for a long time, or I'm hopelessly losing and I know I'm doomed, or if I just feel like playing a different race, or if I've been away from a game for a long time for some reason and I forget what I was doing.

I think thats alot of what makes SEIV fun. Ive succesfully recommended SEIV to people who were worn out on Stars or Master of Magic because I think those games had the same appeal. Lately we have been seeing crossover between the Dominions 2 crowd and SEIV going in both directions. Very different game subjects but I think the people who play both games feel that there is similarity in the appeal of them.

Bleh poll results disappointing. The only reason to play strategy games is to play other human beings, so you can put your strategies against theirs. Even if you lose, there is glory in knowing you lost to a human being and not some kind of automaton http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...es/biggrin.gif

Sorry but looking at a static picture of the Eee doesn't cut it for me... unless I know its a human being behind that Eee. (In one game, the Eee is computerized and has dreadnaughts while I have light cruisers, and it still isn't exciting because I know its some algorithm running the Eee http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/fear.gif )

You might be only half serious but I get set off by such comments in newsGroups when I see them. As much as I love strategy games I dislike player-vs-player games. I am willing to allow that some people live for the glory of climbing a tournament ladder and knowing their position on it. Yes I know thats not all MP players, just one end of the scale. But the point is that there are also people at the other end of the scale who prefer their role-playing aggressions NOT be an emotional human being. Someday maybe we can get the best of both and have a decent AI which will never hold a grudge.

Re: Poll: What do you like most about SEIV??

Hey, I'm a roleplayer. While people my age (14ish or so) were playing resident evil and mario, I was typing in reams of text in MUSH games lol.

It shouldn't piss you off that I like player-vs-player interactions. Actually vs is the wrong thing to emphasize... its more player-player interactions. Guess I didn't emphasize the "when I lose, I don't feel bad" thing... its more "I don't feel a need to be competitive all the time". Seriously, when you get a message from the Eee, do you feel as good as when you get a well thought out message from another player?

Certain games do a very good job of "masking" the computerized fakeness, and totally immerse you in the universe (KOTOR anyone? Dues Ex?), but most games can't overcome my inherent objection to talking only to an algorithm programmed by a computer... that is why so called "eye-candy" and such helps. Eye candy is important, because it brings the game alive... I would have a lot more fun playing single player in SE:IV if there were talking heads with good voice acting representing the main AI protagonists =D.

In all my PBW games, the most fun part of playing the turn is replying to a message from a human player. I get sad when I don't get a message during a turn =D

Re: Poll: What do you like most about SEIV??

Complex non-Chesslike strategy games against the AI tend to grow very boring... AIs are decades away from providing a real challenge without relying on massive cheating. Humans can change strategies and such easily, and always hold surprises. Even the best AIs become highly predictable. It is not a matter of if you will win, but rather when... This, and the interaction, roleplaying aspects, etc., is what makes multiplayer much better than single player for many players.

I like the 'exploration' aspect of se4, even though the warp point connections are all known at the beginning of the game. I wish there was a way to hide them. Oh well, to each his own.

Cheers! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Easy with the language, brianeyci.

Also note that some of us here at the forums view the threads in the 'proper' fashion with the newest on top, so it would be wise to not to use terms as "points to above" in this forum. It would be best to quote the person you are speaking of with the quote button right by the reply button and then type in your responce. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

Not at all what I said. Im not bothered at all that you like it. Its the comment that "The only reason to play strategy games is to play other human beings, so you can put your strategies against theirs" which sounded alittle too close to the things that set me off. It sounds too close to the kids who feel that an Online world is only good for arena combats.

If its a message calling me names and trying to get me to attack or do something stupid then no I dont. Of course I understand that its all "just a game" so Im not saying that it ticks me off but you asked so the answer is, no. I prefer such things come from a computer player. Even in a game I prefer not to respond to a human player quite the way I can allow myself to respond to an AI. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

And again, Im not saying anyone else should play that way. Im only set off if someone fails to allow for the possibility of other peoples playing preferences. No offense, by the way but I do end to notice a high number of PvP style players to be "young bucks" entering the age of challenge so I wouldnt be at all surprised to find out there is a natural reason for it all.

That's really interesting... how do you interact with the AI, when all the AI does is respond with one-liners? And calling someone "stupid" is something no mature person would do... not only is it out of character, but its rude http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...es/biggrin.gif

When I write my Messages (to a human player), they are usually grandiose and in a way which would reflect the nature of each message originating from one galactic empire to another.

And grudges? If my race is an agressive, expansionist race, I would be naturally agressive in my Messages. If it is a peaceloving environmentally friendly treehugging bird species, then I would be more serene. If I hate your race in the game, doesn't mean I hate YOU http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...es/biggrin.gif In-character vs out of character stuff and all that. Of course, some people respond with one-liners too, and write Messages like "can I have point defense cannons V for your armor III?" Well, I don't worry about that either, if they want to RP then power to them, if not I don't worry lol

Time to get to class.

Brian
