What is the etymology of your moniker?
I thought this topic would be fun. So, speak my friends!
The purpose is for anyone to tell the story of how you came up with your screen name for the forums. Also, some of you have ones I have no idea how to pronounce so you can even tell us that! Enjoy y'all http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif! Looks like I will have to go first. Iansidious I came up with this name just before I came to these forums. I wanted to sign up on the offical Star Wars web-site, in order to download things and get newsletters etc. The whole time I could not find a nickname that has not been already taken( I tried to stick with a Star Wars themed name)! So, I came up with a system. Take a Star Wars character and the actor of the character and combined the two too make a nickname. I came up with a few misses, but not for long. I took the first name of Ian McDiarmid(sidious/palpatine) and stick it with sidious. I had it! Ian+sidious makes Iansidious! I liked it. So I used it and I ended up using it here. Thats my story. What is yours? |

Re: What is the etymology of your moniker?
You mean, are we supposed to make any sense when making up a nickname?
So, I had in mind the Greek word "neanios" (young man, youngster) when making my nickname. But I altered the pronounciation and the spelling of my name so much the root is virtually impossible to regognise. Basically the declination was dropped, and the "Al" part was added in the end, maybe as a clever ploy to get near the top of the member list. Oh, and the pronounciation is pretty straightforward: say it as you will, as I won't be able to hear you; even more annoying, I cannot actually hand out retribution should you fail in saying it properly. I tend not to pronounce the final "n" myself, but I cannot think of an English name where a "n" ending is not pronounced. |
Re: What is the etymology of your moniker?
Its my name http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif
although I often have to pull out my military ID card in order to prove it. |
Re: What is the etymology of your moniker?
I picked my name because I knew it would be- and remain- unique on the entire internet. (Quick google check- yeah, it's all me.) Plus it rolls off the tongue nicely, and the use of two regular enligh words means there is always room for re-interpretation and punnery.

Re: What is the etymology of your moniker?
You and David E. Gervais I already knew how you came up with your names. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Re: What is the etymology of your moniker?
First name. Wasn't feeling particularly creative, and I thought I was only going to use these forums for SEIV beta way back in the day (and even then, I recall holding off registering on here until the Last few weeks or so of the beta). I thought the core SE community would stay at the fan sites, and the publisher's wouldn't catch on. We're all falible http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

Re: What is the etymology of your moniker?
My name stems from the old SE Universe Ladder roleplay community back in the days of SE3. I used the same name from there on these forums to maintain ease of recognition. Everybody in those days on the SE Ladder used a full title as their nick name (such as Master Belisarius). It is not meant as some silly ego padder or anything... Imperator Fyron was the leader of the Kazharii Imperium (which was more of a democracy than an empire, but the names sound so much better http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif). It is pronounced (non-phonetically) "fie- run." If you pronounce it "fie- ron" where "ron" is as in "Ronald" (with a phonetic "o" sound), the mighty legions of the Imperium will strike you down. Or something... yeah...
You can learn more about the Kazharii Imperium from it's very own web site: http://kazharii.spaceempires.net/. Please note that due to the SE Ladder being dead and all, I never went and made the site cross-browser compatible. The border images look funky in non-IE browsers... Also, some text areas are not aligned properly (mostly not centered where they should be). Oh, and I am especially proud of the ISN logo, which was painstakingly hand-pixeled. As were my SE3 shipsets. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif |

My nickname is taken in the honour of Aiken Dhream - the hero of the "Pliocene Exiles" series by Julian May. I have a lot of common strains with this product of imagination.

Re: What is the etymology of your moniker?
My current nick stems from my Starcraft BattleNet playing days, where my moniker was TerranCadet. After I ditched Starcraft, I got to know Se4, then Se4 gold, then decided to post here on the shrapnel forums. Since I had to choose a nickname, I decided to reuse my B.Net name, but with the Adet in Cadet dropped, for reasons that have now escaped my mind.

Captain Kwok was the name of the protangonist in a silly space game I made back in high school computer class.

Re: What is the etymology of your moniker?
Mine's quite simple. "Renegade" due to the fact that I like the word, and it fits me quite well, as I usually don't fit in with mainstream society. "13" is the most obvious part of all, its my favorite (and lucky http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif ) number. Not that I believe in lucky numbers... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif

Re: What is the etymology of your moniker?
My name is from my most favorite game of all time: Final Fantasy VI. (also called Final Fantasy 3.) This is an RPG I have played over and over, spending many evenings, weekends, and all-nighters playing.
Near the beginning of the game, the main character, Terra, is trying to get away from the Imperial guards sent by the evil empire. She escapes into the mines, but is cornered, and is about to be captured. Then the Moogles come to save the day! Moogles are white furry creatures living in caves and woods. The names of the Moogles are: Mog, Kupek, Kupop, Kumama, Kuku, Kutan, Kupan, Kushu, Kurin, Kuru, and Kamog. The Moogles defeat the guards and Terra is saved. My avatar is a picture of a Moogle. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/smile.gif |
Re: What is the etymology of your moniker?
Raging Deadstar
It's a combination of two pieces of music. Raging Speedhorn - British Metal band that was playing on TV when I signed up, this random bit stuck. Deadstar - A song by British Rock Band Muse that's a favourite of mine. It fits together well in many ways. Raging Deadstar seems like an oxymoron and ironic, as a deadstar just wouldn't be raging in any sense. Also it just fits well for SEIV. Usually on RP communities I use the name "Maliki Deadstar" as it makes things easier. (Note: Maliki is not my name, I just like it) http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif |
Re: What is the etymology of your moniker?
Just my name: first + Last initial.

Re: What is the etymology of your moniker?
Here's an interesting way to play with this thread, do a google search for your name/nick/handle and see if anything interesting shows up.
Cheers! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif btw when I do a 'sensitive' search using quotation marks to narrow down the hits I still get 5 pages of stuff and it is all connected to me "David E. Gervais" I guess that makes me 'almost famous' http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif |

Re: What is the etymology of your moniker?
Well, there was an episode of Pinky and The Brain where Pinky's weird exclamative words saved the day. They had been captured by an evil computer who claimed to know everything; The Brain asked it what Narf meant. The computer didn't know and asked what it meant. The Brain then informed the computer that Narf meant Poit. Then the computer asked what Poit meant. TB said it meant Chez. The computer asked what Chez meant. The Brain said Narf. And the computer went round and round until it blew up.
I saw that episode the day before I signed up, I think. |

Karibu is similar (by outfit) to cariboe which is a common animal in Finland. It also has some resemblance to my real life name. Furthermore, one of my working colleagues called me "Karibu" in my ex-working place, where it was my unofficial nick. Plus I like the name so I decided to use it in here also.

Well, a friend of mine called me that before she went to Australia. The name stuck.
My Last GF hated the name and that made it more fun to use it... hehe... She said it sounded a little bit too dead, like tombstone. A bit strange I guess, because she herself was a fanatic gothic girl. Doesn't make any sense, does it? |
Re: What is the etymology of your moniker?
tesco samoa
hmmm... well tesco was my nickname back in the 80's and well in university (late 80's and early 90's )I lived in a house where we put on concerts and called the place samoa. Each band that played had to play one Angry samoans cover song. As it was the only band that every one in the house had listed in their top 10 bands... So everyone there called me tesco samoa And in bbs days i used tesco... so back in the early 90's i updated it to tesco samoa. Now I use it everywhere. Also back around 93 to 96 I used to get all the email from that company called Tesco ( not the transport company in North America that we all know over here ) but the box chain in U.K. ( I believe ) I used to answer them and sign them tescosamoa. I soon discovered English people have no sence of humour http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif |
Re: What is the etymology of your moniker?
My nickname came from FF VIII. It was the first FF game I completed from the start and the name of the ship they use towards the end of the game was called the Ragnarok.
Ragnarok also has something to do with the war of the gods at the end of the world or something like that. It is a bunch of mumbo jumbo that is just fake stories and non-related to the source of my nick. |

Very big into Mythology, Egyptian being a personal favourite. I'm also into Ancient History that goes alongside mythology.
I'm currently working towards A-Levels in Archaeology, and then possibly a degree with a specialisation in Egyptology. That would be a perfect job for me, of course I'll most likely be in my late 20's before I Reach that far http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/smile.gif |
Re: What is the etymology of your moniker?
I found ankh(angk)in the dictionary.
Egyptian cross with loop at top: a symbol consisting of a cross with a loop for the top extension and a short crossbar, used in ancient Egypt to signify life. Anyway, great stories. Narf has the oddest by far! Just strange. But a good story nevertheless. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif |

DarkAnt - my name is anthony and I was playing some RPG where black death was too big of a name. I was playing some evil dude so I picked DarkAnt. Black Death - the plauge |
Re: What is the etymology of your moniker?
DarkHorse is for my poly sci major in college. The dark horse candidate is usually the long-shot underdog type, which suits me. It's a hard nick to get on most forums though, as the name is popular because of the comics.

Re: What is the etymology of your moniker?
When I was still an active member of the SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism), I started a fighing unit of heavy fighters. The name of the unit was to be Bearclaw. Archers were to be called Teeth of the Bear. I took the name because where I live, our town mascot is the Kermode bear, a rare spieces of black bear that has white fur that only live in this part of the world. The fighting unit never got anywhere but I started using the name (with a small 'b') Online.
For those who don't know, the SCA is a mediveal recreation club. http:\\www.sca.org Chances are there is a chapter near you. Oh, and incase you were wondering, the Kermodi bear is NOT an albino. It is an actual sub-species of black bear. |
Re: What is the etymology of your moniker?
My "etymology" is simple. I just got lazy and used most of my e-mail address to have a handle on here. I usually don't go by having my middle initial in my name, but when my server was creating my account, they asked for my first name. I gave Greg, as I prefer that to Gregory, but then they asked for my middle initial and then my Last name. They created my e-mail account using the info I gave them. If I do use my middle initial, I prefer using my full first name, but I didn't know how they were going to create my e-mail account that way. Oh well. I can live with that.
I was tempted to use my old handle I used when I lived in Phoenix and got my first modem. I was known as Nanoc back then, but when I tried using that name on a couple of sites after I got my pc, I found out a lot of people were using that handle. So I'm just using gregebowman for most of the sites that require a user id. |
Re: What is the etymology of your moniker?
I was actually *looking* for an avatar name...found Arakiel under a list of Fallen Angels so Arakiel I became...that was like 7 years ago... I usually have an Arakiel character in every game I play now. Heck he even has a Last name (Gazorkull)
<pauses for a schizophrenic episode> right, im better now... |
Re: What is the etymology of your moniker?
I DungeonMastered games a couple of decades ago and people had a hard time coming up with names. I cringed at hearing people use Conan or Drizzit. (I know, strange for a guy named Gandalf)
Anyway I would tell people to write out their full name, and maybe the well known one they wanted to use, then scramble the syllables around. It usually generated a couple of very unique fantasy-world names which still felt personal and "themselves". And often had a feel of a race or class to them. So I often used Ganthony the Wizard, Ardony the Ranger, Gardell the Paladin, Garker the Merchant or Thief, etc etc. They all felt very personally named because they were my name just pieced together different. |
