OT: Spread Firefox
Time to ditch that huge wasteland of exploits and holes running on your computer and get a browser that will not infest your PC with viruses, trojans, spyware, adware, malicious advertisements, etc., etc., etc. That's right, I am talking about Internet Exploder. It is time to leave that sinking ship behind and move to a better browser.
http://www.spreadfirefox.com/communi...0x60/trust.gif Get Firefox Firefox is rather feature-laden and highly customizable as well, not to mention standards-compliant, which Internet Exploder has never managed to be. A small number of features are listed below, taken from the official Firefox web site. Popup Blocking Stop annoying popup ads in their tracks with Firefox's built in popup blocker. Tabbed Browsing View more than one web page in a single window with this time saving feature. Open links in the background so that they're ready for viewing when you're ready to read them. Find out more... Privacy and Security Built with your security in mind, Firefox keeps your computer safe from malicious spyware by not loading harmful ActiveX controls. A comprehensive set of privacy tools keep your Online activity your business. |

How is firefox signficantly different/better than Opera?
Thanks, Alarik |
Re: OT: Spread Firefox
Never used Opera... Firefox is a small (4.7 MB) download, so check it out. Probably sites you can find on Google that compare the two browsers. There is even a way to get the feature of Opera where your Last browsing session is saved when you reload the browser, using the Tabbrowser Extensions extension (not malformed grammar, I swear!).

Re: OT: Spread Firefox
Several months ago, I took Fyron's advice and switched from Exploder to Firefox. I'm very happy that I did. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

Re: OT: Spread Firefox
This sounds to much like a commercial. I say we shoot Fyron and Kamog.

The might do the trick, but it's pretty difficult to use them effectively without some form of directional control. I would go with Oh, and Firefox is cool. Have a |
Re: OT: Spread Firefox
Im using mozilla since a while now, and i have to say its really THAT much better than Netscape or IE. It has a load of nice options, is smaller and loads faster. In addition it seems to be less attackable, though that could be because most hackers focus on IE since it has more Users.

Firefox sux!! IE sux!! Opera sux!! Offline rulez!!!!!! </flamatorial> |
Re: OT: Spread Firefox
Though I usually reject this kind of advertising, I have to agree with Fyron. I changed my browser to Firefox Last spring because I grew too annoyed with pop ups with IE and I have been very satisfied since. Also I like especially the interleves ability which IE lacks, for it allows me to have several sites open concurrently without browser processes eating all of my RAM and also this "gray balk" where all Windows programs are wisible, is not too crowded.
I don't know about Opera or Lynx or other browsers. They might be as good as Firefox, but this beats IE and Netscape 10-0. |
Re: OT: Spread Firefox
The latest Firefox is the 1.0 'Preview Release' which is what they used to call a 'release candidate' -- i.e. a final beta which might be confirmed as 1.0 if no serious bugs turn up. If there are problems they fix them and release another 'almost final' Version.
It's a good idea to go with the very latest because a lot of security fixes have been made to both Firefox and the Mozilla suite lately. Just got Mozilla 1.7.3 Last week which fixes several security holes. As more people use Mozilla/Firefox these security fixes will be more important because more hackers will be targetting these browsers. |

I will take back what I said before. It's a pretty nice program. After the initial crash and denuncation, I gave it another try with much better results.

Re: OT: Spread Firefox
Why I hate installing new software. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...es/Injured.gif
So I install Firefox. One of the first things I do then is try to call up my email client. In all its wisdom, Firefox calls up Outlook Express. I have never used that client and never intend to! Naturally I cannot find a way to get it to call Netscape Messenger. In modern computer parlance, this is called "user friendly". Fyron, any idea how I can get it to call up my email client and not this default client? |
Re: OT: Spread Firefox
Is Netscape Messenger the system default mail client?

Locate string "network.protocol-handler.external.mailto". It's set to "false" by default. Set it to true (double click on the string - type "true"). Close FF. Launch Messenger, and set this mail client as default one. Should work, although I don't guarantee. |
Re: OT: Spread Firefox
Firefox is a real nice browser. IE is improved with SP2, but is still target #1 for the a$$ wipes that write exploits. Still have to keep IE, there are a lot of things that it will do that Firefox won't.
|
Re: OT: Spread Firefox
Mostly due to that quagmire that is ActiveX.
|
Re: OT: Spread Firefox
Been using it since .6...i'm not sure I could work on a computer without Firefox anymore. The built in popup blocking and adblock extension makes my browsing nearly ad free..and tabbed windows are just too damned convenient to be given up.
I've tried Opera and MyIE but both of those are too bloated or have funky interfaces and neither one has an "adblock" extension that I ever saw. Also, neither of those is free, you have to pay to get rid of the built-in ads of their "free" Versions...Firefox is and always will be free http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif |
Re: OT: Spread Firefox
MyIE2 has adblock integrated along with it's popup block. And it is free to download, and it doesn't have any ads in it that I recall. But, when it comes down to it, it's only a front end to Internet Explorer, so all the same security issues and standard complience is still there. Firefox has now surpassed it in functionality and stability, so it is the best choice. Pretty much the only thing I miss from MyIE2 was the mouse gestures, but there's a plugin for Firefox for that now (and I've gotten used to not using them, and whenever someone else uses my computer the gestures confuse the hell out of 'em for some reason).

Re: OT: Spread Firefox
Ok, let's say I get Firefox or another similar program. How do I set it up so I can dial my server? When I set IE up, they talked me through it over the phone. Not sure if I can replicate that with a new program. How easy is it to access your server?
|
Re: OT: Spread Firefox
Since it was already set up for IE, it should just work for Firefox. The dialup settings are within Windows itself, so Firefox will look for connection preferences, see you have a dialup connection, and use that like normal. If it doesn't work like that, you still have IE, so you can post here with any problems, should there be any (I doubt there will be).

Re: OT: Spread Firefox
Got it. Been there done that done the math. Love the extentions thing and the tabbed browsing.
Was a little annoyed that it said it would convert all my previous crap (Favorites, stored passwords, etc.) and the results were a little "sketchy." Turin |

Re: OT: Spread Firefox
Aswome browser thats all I have to say about it. A hell of alot better than IE and just as good if not better than NS.

Re: OT: Spread Firefox
Hmmm... Just switched over from Mozilla to Firefox, since Mozilla.org seems to be pushing it a bit harder, and so far I like it. Only problem is, I got Thunderbird as an email client since it looked all nice and fancy, but it doesn't seem to be able to import my old emails & settings from Mozilla. What's that all about?

Re: OT: Spread Firefox
I normally use Opera, this thread convinced me to give FireFox a try. Its great, really nice. Fast, Efficient, less cluttered looking than Opera.
The extension cabilities in FireFox are very nice. After a little searching I was able to find an extension that would allow me pick up where I left off when I Last closed FireFox, like I can in Opera. Without this ability I would be staying with Opera. |
Re: OT: Spread Firefox
Opera needs some hand-made tweaks to provide maximum viewing area. And it has much more flexibility in interface customisation than _default_ FF setup.

Re: OT: Spread Firefox
Actually it does. FF is advertized as IE-killer, so its main auditory is a computer illiterate part of the internet Users (about 90% of total amount of Users). They'll hardly download and install extensions. They are typically interested in the features out of the box.
|
Re: OT: Spread Firefox
Still i would prefer new mozilla over both opera and netspace, not mentioning ie
|
Re: OT: Spread Firefox
Pfft. Firefox is just Mozilla, stripped down and with useful things like a complete preferences dialog cut out. Funny thing is it really isn't any faster. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...ies/tongue.gif
|
Re: OT: Spread Firefox
I don't think it's supposed to be faster in terms of how long it takes Page X to load. The main goal was to reduce the overall footprint, both on disk and in memory. By removing all the integrated components, the browser can have only the components it needs to use in memory (eg. no use having the mail client loaded and ready for mailto: links if you only use webmail, etc). So, it's minutely faster because there is less stuff in memory to go through, but that is more a product of the overall system being faster because of reduced memory usage.
So, short Version: Firefox = Mozilla - bloat. |
