Looking for players for a new NEWBIE game.

Hi all!

Thanks to Arakiel I have recently begun my first PBW game, Shattered Hopes.
I'm very excited about it and anxiously await new turns. And thus since I suffer from a severe SEIV addiction I would like to start and host another game myself.
I'm still pondering on the settings for this game but some things are certain already :

1. A big game using Fyron's Quadrant Mod for about 10-15 players with enough room for some empire building before all the shooting starts.

2. I would like this game to be heavy in diplomacy and politics and thus am searching for players who can live with that.

3. I'd like to see some role-playing while using the game's forum at the PBW site.

4.Newbies!! The more the merrier since I'm one myself. Although some veterans are welcome aboard as long as they don't wipe us from the map directly http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...es/biggrin.gif .

I started this thread to see if you guys would be interested in this. So if you are let me know, so we can work out the details.

Re: Looking for players for a new NEWBIE game.

I'm in. I didn't join Shattered Hopes because I wasn't sure I'm enough of a newbie to be welcome there. This will only be my second PBW game, but I'm good enough to wipe the floor with the AI on high AI bonus, and I'm doing quite well in the Race to SEV Dertran game.

Some rules I'd like to see in no particular order:

1. No Intel

2. No Religious races

3. 5000 racial points

4. Good starting planets

5. 48 hour fully automated turns

6. Warp points anywhere in system

Re: Looking for players for a new NEWBIE game.

the beautiy of fqm maps is that you do not need a large map.

2) design the map so it has wraps on the edges and force the players to write up good detail about their empires

3) GNN news and such are always good. ( I suggest turn on the everyplayer sees the map )

4) hehehe.... not all veterans are good... look at me.

tesco samoa October 6th, 2004 03:48 PM

Re: Looking for players for a new NEWBIE game.

now if you want to really force stuff.

make a mod... and take all the stock values ( costs and equal them all out )

add pvk balance

will make for some interesting setups...

Arakiel October 6th, 2004 07:08 PM

Re: Looking for players for a new NEWBIE game.

Hehe...sounds interesting. I'm not always a big fan of mods but what the heck, i'm in. As long as it's Fyron's Quadrant mod and not something wierd I'll give it a shot.

Course now I gotta come up with a new race and history for it...this could take me a few days to iron out http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

If we are going to be heavy diplomacy and politics then I'd have to say that Intel should be IN...I cant think of many things more political then some friendly old spying LOL.

Re: Looking for players for a new NEWBIE game.

Glad you're joining the game Arakiel!
We'll just use FQM for making a larger map, the rest will be stock.

Also good to see douglas join!

And maybe even tesco will join us http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif!

Re: Looking for players for a new NEWBIE game.

Hiya!

I'm interested. I've not ever played a PBW game, and truth to tell I've not even finished an AI game. I think I've got the basics down so I might not be a total writeoff. I do travel a lot for work so I'll probably be missing a turn or two but I think I can handle that. I've got no real suggestions for rules or anything. I can deal with whatever.

Sivran October 6th, 2004 11:19 PM

Re: Looking for players for a new NEWBIE game.

Hmmmm sounds fun. Eh, why not just go and make it Devnull? Add Space Monsters as an AI and all the nifty new comps in Devnull make things pretty interesting... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif Devnull also includes an older Version of FQM.

Salient October 8th, 2004 09:23 AM

Re: Looking for players for a new NEWBIE game.

A little bump.

And thanks to everyone for their suggestions.
I DL Devnull and am playing around with it, looks really cool.
Maybe for a third game?
Since this one is more aiming for newbies I think it's best to go with the stock game + FQM.

Let's hope some more players will sign up for this one http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

Well how do you sign-up I do not see it under "Open Games" or maybe I am just blind:-)

Re: Looking for players for a new NEWBIE game.

I haven't created the game yet, still waiting for some more players and deciding on the settings.
Probably by monday everything will be ready to receive empire files and more players will be interested.

Glad you decided to join Enigma!

Re: Looking for players for a new NEWBIE game.

Colliding Space Dreams is now accepting players!

For now there's room for 10 players, we can always add more later.

Remember that this game is on a large map so there will be plenty of room for empire building. Extensive diplomacy and roleplaying is encouraged.

Turns are set to full automatic every 36 hrs but this can be changed ofcourse.

Hi Guys:

I have been playing Dominions II for a while, and I decided to dust off my SEIV disk Last night. I need to bone up on how the game works before I join in, but please keep me in mind for future NOOB games.

Re: Looking for players for a new NEWBIE game.

I've applied to join. I have a few questions about rules:

"No tech trading" - does that include trading ships just to analyze them? What about population trading?

Will we be forced to waste research and facility space on intel facilities that are almost impossible to use offensively without an overwhelming advantage, and even with such an advantage won't usually do very much for the cost?

Will the extremely overpowered Deeply Religious advanced racial trait be allowed?

Are we using tesco's suggestion of turning on the "every player sees entire map at start" option?

Douglas,
All good points and glad you raised them ! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

No Tech Trading : No trading/gift/tribute of tech, No ship trading, if you want to analyze ships, goota capture them.
Population trading seems ok to me.

Intel : I would keep it allowed, it's just a strategic decision if you want to invest in that.

Deeply Religious Trait : I'm fine with not allowing it. I would be interested to see what other people think about that.

Ofcourse all these points are up for debate, so let's hear it.

Enigma October 13th, 2004 01:42 PM

Re: Looking for players for a new NEWBIE game.

I would say we would need to make a decision pretty quick. I am ok with no tech or ship trading. My race is not "Religious" but if players have races that are we need to let them know pretty quick. Also if we disallow intell then I would need to withdraw and reapply because I would want to make a slight change to my race.

Sivran October 13th, 2004 04:09 PM

Re: Looking for players for a new NEWBIE game.

Hmm no talisman? Darn http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif Guess it'll give me an opportunity to try out the organic race I made.. Or maybe just go with no traits!

Salient October 13th, 2004 07:03 PM

Re: Looking for players for a new NEWBIE game.

I suggest we allow intel, it's like I said a strategic choice.

Tech and ship trading are off limits and so is the religious trait.

douglas October 13th, 2004 08:38 PM

Re: Looking for players for a new NEWBIE game.

Yes it's a strategic choice, but it's a very poor one. Intel in SEIV is weighted very heavily towards defense, and even projects that do get through don't have much of an effect for their cost IMO. You don't want to be caught without intel defense, but beyond that intel is largely useless. I'd rather just not have to bother with it.

Re: Looking for players for a new NEWBIE game.

C'mon guys, we're still looking for more players!!

Re: Looking for players for a new NEWBIE game.

Hmm, Arakiel and MoTec both posted they'd like to play but haven't joined the game yet. Salient, are you going to play or just host? If you want to actually play in this game you'll have to hit the "join" button (and approve yourself), hosts aren't automatically players. If all three of you join, that brings us up to 8.

Another miscellaneous game setup option I'd like that isn't on by default: Warp points anywhere in system.

Ofcourse I'll be playing, I just haven't made my empire yet http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

I'll send Arakiel and motec a mail today hoping that they'll join.

Warp points will be anywhere in system.

Re: Looking for players for a new NEWBIE game.

Hey, forgot about this thread, been kinda busy.

Are we allowing deeply religous or no?

I still think Intel is a good idea. If the game is centered around RP and not kill the guy standing next to you then Intel makes perfect sense, and since we ARE RPing it...frankly what respectable government wouldn't have at least SOME intelligence infrastructure?

Let me know about religion cause I was thinking of bringing in my hedgemony but it has the "deeply relgious" trait. So if we are ruling that out I'll need to know before I can upload. Thanks for the reminder about this game!

Re: Looking for players for a new NEWBIE game.

Look five Posts back from yours. State religions are outlawed.

If SEIV had a reasonable intel system, I'd agree with you. But really, what's the point when you need four empires working together to bring down one empire's counter-intel, assuming equal intelligence points for all and the four are dedicating ALL of their intel efforts towards that empire leaving none for defense?

Salient October 15th, 2004 01:11 PM

Re: Looking for players for a new NEWBIE game.

All players emailed through the PBW site on the intel question.
I hope they come here and voice their opinions so we can quickly resolve this.

I hope we can get the game going somewhere next week. Hopefully will find two more players.

doesnt sound to me like outlawed, sounds to me like it's still up for discussion.

as to your other question on whats the point of intel...it's called Role Playing, you may have heard of it. It involves taking on the role of another (in this case government) and acting just as that other would. Taking something out for all players because you don't find it effective smacks at the opposite of what RP is for. Now if YOU don't want to use Intel in your government then that's fine, but for others it may be an intricate part of their society.

I am quite familiar with role playing. What I don't understand is why someone would want to roleplay having his agents caught EVERY SINGLE TIME unless he had half a dozen allies helping them out. If someone want to play an intel-oriented race, I can practically gaurantee that that race will be a very minor power because of it.

Salient October 15th, 2004 03:16 PM

Re: Looking for players for a new NEWBIE game.

How about we make it a compromise ?

I agree with douglas that the deeply religius trait is overpowered, so we leave that one out.

I agree with Arakiel that intel is part of the game and a strategic decision for each player to make, so we'll have that in.
