4 years
4 years ago this month I registered here, and IIRC, there were some different old forums before that? I do not remember too clearly, but I do recall that SEIV was not out yet when I first found the shrapnel site
Anyways, I was just thinking how cool it is that so many of the same old faces are still here. Geo, Atrocities, Belisarius, and the rest of the old grognards. Mind you, this is not to slight the newer members of the community in any way. I am just saying that such continuity is very unusual in an Online game community. And I like it http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/cool.gif |
Re: 4 years
Indeed. It is mostly because there have not been any new viable alternatives for Space Opera diehards in the Last several years, so we all have to stay with SE4. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif And no, GalCiv doesn't count, as it is a completely different genre of game.

Re: 4 years
The game I would most rate a true "Space Opera" was an old board-game by SPI (Simulations Publications, Inc) called Freedom in the Galaxy.
It actually involved heroes, several of them, and the heroes could undertake missions during your turn, in a separate phase from the moving of fleets and armies. In addition there were political considerations, with each planet's politics rated on a sliding scale from imperial sympathy to rebel sympathy. It even had a Rebel Secret Base http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/eek.gif And Imperial Atrocities http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/evil.gif To be honest, it was pretty campy. One of the imperial characters, supposedly an illegitimate niece of the emperor, was named "Thysa Kimbo". Another of the imperials was of a dog-headed race, and was named "Barca" (groan) |
Re: 4 years
Four years and still ticking. Who would have guessed?

Re: 4 years
Possum, did you register for Armies of Armaggedon? That is why I original registered and "stumbled" on to SE4 several months later!

Re: 4 years
Hey TampaGamer! Ever felt like reviving that old sound mod of yours that hardly anyone ever seems to use anymore? I have all the sounds from Master of Orion II and I think they'd make a fine addition to any sounds collection! Gotta love the stellar converter! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif
(You DID intend that mod to be used by other mods to draw on for their custom sounds, right? Just like the Imagemod? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif) |
Re: 4 years
He gave me permission to include it in that Sound Pack we were talking about... too bad only 3 people had any sounds... Guess I should make it anyways, one of these days. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

Re: 4 years
Actually now that you mention it, these Last four years don't really seem like that long ago although you could fit a decade of life events into them.
I remember when I first downloaded the demo and said to myself, and I quote "God damn this is the game I have been looking for for years." I can still remember going to bed each night dreaming of the day that I could play past the 100 turn limit of the demo and build fleets of dreadnoughts to take out the EEE and the purple dudes. I can still remember how I felt when the game was pushed back for release and when I first came to Shrapnel to post. I could have sworn it was in Nov 2000, but the forum says I registered in Dec 2000. I know I posted before then, but the mind does play tricks on us old people. A lot has happened in the Last four years, a hell of a lot, but one thing has remained a constant stable source during those turbulant times, well two things really, SE IV and these forums. Thanks Shrapnel for keeping the place open and the lights always on. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif You don't know how much it has meant to use poor game addicts, evil rules, and hopeless loosers. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif |
Re: 4 years
I hope I'll be able to show this forum (active and discussing SE10) to my son/daughter and tell: "That's what your father was addicted to for decades, now it's your turn". http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif
