Missiles and Experience

Your ship doesn't gain experience when it kills an enemy with missiles. Hmmm, am I the only one who think that this doesn't quite make sense? If you are a F16 pilot and you kill 5 enemies with missiles, you'd be called an Ace and you're probably pretty darn good for surviving and winning. Shouldn't the same logic apply here?

v.1.87 (Patch 4)
4. Fixed - Ships were not receiving experience for kills made with seekers.

Thanks. That would explain it. I only SE4 not SE4 Gold.

I have Version 1.91 and I find that my ships STILL aren't gaining experience from missile kills. Has anybody actually tried it and gained experience? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...s/confused.gif

Re: Missiles and Experience

Furthermore, if I remember it correctly, shooting seekers down gives you 1/10 experience points in combat. So you gain 1% experience by shooting down 10 fighters or missiles. I am not sure about drones. I might remember this wrong, though.

Re: Missiles and Experience

OK, I just tried it now, and ships do not get experience from destroying enemy ships using seekers, even with the latest patch. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif

Re: Missiles and Experience

Did you try it with how many seekers? I remember that someone said at some forgotten thread that you have to shoot them down en masse, so my numbers of 10 seekers for 1% can be mumbo jumbo.

Kamog October 15th, 2004 04:12 AM

Re: Missiles and Experience

I'm not shooting down seekers. My ship is firing seekers at enemy ships. My ship doesn't get experience when the enemy ship is destroyed.

What Version are you playing with? Pre-Gold?

Re: Missiles and Experience

Same here; my ships did not gain any experience while using seekers, at least not after several kills. Either it is based on the same reasoning as fighting units (unlikely), or it is simply not working.

Edit: Under the 1.91 patch of course.

Re: Missiles and Experience

How many ships did you destroy? It might not give a full experience point for each kill.

Alneyan October 15th, 2004 03:03 PM

Re: Missiles and Experience

I have just run a test where I killed thirty vessels or so, and did not gain any point of ship experience. It was not against units or fleet experience, which would be quite different.

odd I thought they were, but I just checked my ships and they are all at 0%...

Re: Missiles and Experience

Too bad this bug was not fixed. Yet another reason to avoid seekers in your designs.
bbq, I misled you unintentionaly. Sorry. I trusted the history.txt

What if you hit a ship with direct fire weapons, and then finish it off with a missile?

Only the "killing stroke" matters for experience purposes.

It all depends on how it is implemented. Perhaps the Last ship to hit it with a DF weapon is recorded, and then XP is dished out when the ship dies.

Does this thread indicate the possiblity that we need to look into how experience is being done, and how it will be implemented in SE5?

Only the killing stroke. One ship could hit the target with 12 shots, then a second ship hits it once and finishes it. The second ship gets the 1 experience point, the first ship gets nothing. Killing ships only gives ship experience in full 1% increments.

The method that experience is acquired is more or less known. It is definitely wonky and needs to be revamped for SE5...

Then what did the patch do?!

I'm suggesting that maybe Aaron might have done something like that, and we need to try out these variations again.

See, I always thought that was the point. We used to say that you had to switch to direct-fire for experience. Maybe the mention of it in the patch was removing the Last bugs that allowed experience to come from a missile kill.
