OT Poll: Amount of Sleep...
Well, here's the question: How much sleep do you get on average per night, and how long is the longest you've ever gone without sleep. This poll is just for my curiosity, and because I'm trying to see how long I can stay awake this weekend. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif
(PS, due to some input by a forum viewer, I'd like people to post how MUCH over 36 hours they've been up, simply because "over 36 hours" is a little imprecise. If you'd like to post you're record, please feel free, and post it here! Thanks a lot http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif ) |
Re: OT Poll: Amount of Sleep...
36 hours? Pfft. Have you never heard of the weekend LAN party? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

Re: OT Poll: Amount of Sleep...
Well, it does say more than 36 hours http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Re: OT Poll: Amount of Sleep...
Yeah but that could be anything...

Re: OT Poll: Amount of Sleep...
Alright Fyron, you make some sense. So, just for you, I've asked people to post to say how long they've been up, it it's over 36 hours. Thanks for bringing my oversight to my attention http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/cool.gif

I'll wait for some others to post their records... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...ies/stupid.gif

Re: OT Poll: Amount of Sleep...
The longest I have stayed awake is about two and a half days, during a particularly busy time in school when I had a lot of assignments and labs. Then after that I only got a few hours of sleep, followed by another long period of being awake, and so on. That week I got a total of 9 hours sleep for the week. I felt like a complete zombie after that. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/Sick.gif

Re: OT Poll: Amount of Sleep...
Well at Uni in my first year I just did not stop for almost 72 hours (I actually crashed late in the afternoon on the third day). The scary thing was I definitely felt like I was starting to see wierd things http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/eek.gif (& no nothing else was involved http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...ies/tongue.gif), not just those 'auras' around objects you sometimes get from sleep deprivation. Strangly enough there was absolutely no reason for me to stay awake that long I just could not sleep at all the first night http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/yawn.gif and stayed up!
Though the worst time I had was in my final undergraduate year when I was finishing the writeup of my project. Since I had no computer of my own at the time I stayed in the departments computer room for almost 36 hours straight, typing, typing, typing... then using the chairs as dragsters and giggling inanely http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...ies/stupid.gif |
Re: OT Poll: Amount of Sleep...
I sleep an average of 8-10 hours a night, but that number really changes with the seasons. I'm the kind of guy that likes to wake up at first light, so in the summer the amount of sleep I get is closer to 6-8 hours on average. In the winter I lean closer to 9-10 hours, but I still get up in the dark and it really feels strange to me.
Longest sleepless run? I have done more 'All-nighters' than I care to remember. I think 33 hours is about the longest without sleep, but on several occasions I've gone 72-80 hours with a short 4 hour nap to split the run. You'd be amazed at how 4 hours of sleep and a shower can boost your energy. As for marathons, how about a 70 hour work week with another 28 hours of commuting added on to that sustained for 6 and a half months. (A little detail, I am not able to sleep on buses so I was not able to sneak in and extra sleep in transit.) You do the math. Nuf said, Cheers! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif |
Re: OT Poll: Amount of Sleep...
Current record, 153 hours, or 6 days and 9 hours. I did it in university to win a bet that it wasn't humanly possible to not sleep for five days. Course, our Psychology department found out about it and asked if they could use me for a sleep-deprivation study. So, not only did I win the bet but the Psych department paid me as well.
BTW, this is NOT a feat I recomend trying to duplicate. Not sleeping for that long screws you up big time, and not just in the head. I was constantly getting bloody noses, bruised fingers just from typing and doing pretty much anything was very painful. Though the stuff that goes on in your head is pretty weird too. I remember the experiment/bet started at noon on Sunday and finished at 9pm the following Saturday. I'd won the bet by noon Friday, by noon Saturday I'd proved how bloody stubborn I could be, but then my mind was so addled I didn't go to bed until 9 because I didn't want to disrupt my sleeping patterns for the following week. Ended up waking up early Tuesday morning. |
Re: OT Poll: Amount of Sleep...
Not sure what my longest stretch is - probably around 48 hours- but when I was at uni I used to stay up all night playing games/ on IRC on a regular basis. I've often wanted to try 70 or more hours just to see what the hell happens to your mind - gotta be the cheapest hallucinagen available=-)

Re: OT Poll: Amount of Sleep...
Ouch...
It depends with me, I can from anywhere between 8 hours of sleep a night to 4, It usually balances at 6 hours or under, But I do have trouble sleeping. Longest I Stayed awake? 2 days and a bit playing SEIV, non SEIV? At least 4 days in the school holidays, It might have been 5 but when you're awake that long you do tend to lose track. I slept for at least 2 days straight after that http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...es/biggrin.gif |
Re: OT Poll: Amount of Sleep...
On average, I sleep less about 6 hours (or a bit less). Partly due to being unable to sleep much longer and sometimes due to having too much fun to go to sleep. However, having said that, I DO take naps when I feel tired, so I really average around 7 hours of sleep per day (it's just not all at the same time).
Seems like I heard recently that Americans sleep less now than they did 25 years ago. |
Re: OT Poll: Amount of Sleep...
I usaully get around 11 or 12 hours of sleep. Not counting school when I am obligated to get up. As for the longest amount of time I have stayed up. I was awake the longest for 120 hours when I was out camping for a week( I couldnt sleep, I had this fear a bug coming in and like biteing me or a bear or something) that weekend I slept like eight hours.

Re: OT Poll: Amount of Sleep...
Ive spent most of my adult life under military rules. Not bad in cases like this since they will definetly push the limits, but the limits they set will have reasons. Not reasons like being nice to the troops. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif but reasons based on experts.
Female: 7-9 hours sleep Male: 8-10 hours sleep after 16 hours you are not allowed to operate heavy machinery. After 32 hours you are no longer responsible for your actions. Also after 32 hours, you CANNOT catch up on lost sleep. Its "deducted from the end of your life span" as they used to warn us. BELIEVE me, if ANYONE has tested the limits of limited sleep its the military. So I figure their rules are good enough for me to at least try to maintain. |
Re: OT Poll: Amount of Sleep...
The longest number of hours in a row I have slept is about 18 hours. This was when I was a kid and I used to sleep all the time during school holidays when I didn't have very much to do. As long as there was no loud noise and nobody waked me, I'd stay asleep all night and most of the day. This was especially true on cloudy days.
Now, I still sometimes have trouble getting up in the morning in the winter when it's dark or when it's very cloudy, but I have to get up because I have things to do. On weekdays I usually get 6 hours or less of sleep. On weekends, 8 hours. |
Re: OT Poll: Amount of Sleep...
Usually try for 6-8hrs with the occassional 10 thrown in for good measure.
The longest I've gone without sleep is about 36hrs. That's the day when I worked from 7pm-7am, came home and moved, then went back to work for my next shift 7pm-7am. On pressing nights when important papers or exams are much closer than I'd like - I always try to get those 1hr powernaps in to "refresh". http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/shock.gif |

I hope I don't sound like I'm bragging about it... I'm not. It was not a pleasent experience and it took me the better part of two months to fully recover from it. But wanna know something really weird? One of the main side-effects of sleep deprivation, after you've had the 'big sleep' at the end? Insomnia. Go figure. |
Re: OT Poll: Amount of Sleep...
Longest I've ever gone without sleep was three days when when I was 13, here's irony for you, I wasn't TRYING to stay awake for three days but everytime I even tried to sleep my body just kept kicking in the adreniline or something because it just wouldn't relax at all.
I of course Lied to my folks and told them I was sleeping so they wouldn't take me to the doctor but by the end of day three I was so tired I actually just sort of laid down in the middle of my living room and didn't wake up until my parents woke me the next afternoon and I was still exausted and when I went to bed again that night I slept til around noon the next day too. The reason lack of sleep can kill you is because REM sleep is far more necessary then people seem to think (that's why people who were anestatized(SP?) are still so tired when they come too) because it is a time where your mind sort of dumps all the excess baggage of the day and "reboots" I guess you could say. Because the lack of sleep starts to effect your brain it also starts to effect your body of course (as the two are intertwined) so when your brain starts going gahgah your body starts losing it's "direction" and eventually it just says enough and stops altogether resulting in death. Or so I've heard I don't actually know if any of that is medically accurate or not but I'm sure one of the smart folks here has the info http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif |
Re: OT Poll: Amount of Sleep...
If I am lucky I can get about six hours of sleep. Most of the time I wake up every hour and have to get up and whiz.
The longest I slept, non drug induced, was about 36 hours. The longest I have slept, drug induced, was about 72 hours. |

Re: OT Poll: Amount of Sleep...
I find it hard to concept the idea that people can be awake for more than 24 hours. It is unnatural and surely a human being is incapable of thinking adequately after that time. I have never in my life even come close to being awake for anything more than 18 hours at most. I once had to work at 3.30 am (well technically I didn't HAVE to but when I had to do something by 3pm why waste time). I would go to bed at 10pm and wake at 3.30am, work till 8am then go back to sleep. This by the way will seriuosly throw off your rythmns and thats when I discovered what hallucianting feels like.

Re: OT Poll: Amount of Sleep...
Lol, I don't think anyone who stayed awake longer than 48 or so hours stated they were "thinking adequately"
After 4 days of being awake myself everytime i stood up i lost balance and crashed to the floor, not to mention all the bright fuzzy lights, disorientation, lack of coherrent speech and all the fun that came with it. |

Heh. If people ever ask me bout losing weight (lost 60kg in 1.5years), I always swear by the Fork Diet. Goes by one simple rule: PUT DOWN THE FORK!

But if you want a real challenge, try solitary confinement. Makes sleep deprivation seem like a cake walk. And yes, I did that too, again for the Psych department (hey, I was a student, they were offering money. What else could I do?). Now THAT screws you up nicely. Went five days without seeing or hearing anyone or anything, and when they let me out I went racing around the place hugging everybody I saw and crying for joy when they spoke to me. Everyone always says solitary can't be that bad, but trust me, it's worse. |
Re: OT Poll: Amount of Sleep...
thats another thing I can't comprehend. People speak of making do with 4-5 hours of sleep every few days. If someone tries to wake me up after 6 hours I....well if I had less manners....would tell them to "<censored> off", or at least I might, if I used that sort of language, if it wasn't for the fact that I am half asleep. Someone can wake me up and if they don't keep an eye on me I will be asleep 5 seconds later, and have no memory of them even trying to wake me. Oh and a Clock is uselss. Maybe once a week otherwise I just ignore it, by which I mean it does not even register as a disturbance.

Re: OT Poll: Amount of Sleep...
Wow, I feel like a weakling compared to you oddballs. I sleep about 9 hours average, with a record of 16 hours. The longest no-sleep-straight was 36 hours, which seems to pale in comparison to you wierdos. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif
I don't know how anyone can live on 4 hours of sleep a day. After 3 days of that, I felt big-time hallucinations. Interestingly enough, I think that loosened my sense of reality or something, 'cause now I get hallucinations if I stay up for only 24 hours in a row. By the way, when you people mean hallucinations, how much interaction is there? Because I find myself having conversations with people who aren't there, and I don't think that's normal. But again, my record feels small now thanks to you people. However, I knew someone at the cannery with ADHD, so he got 0-2 (2 more often)hours of sleep for like...2 weeks in a row. He was kinda funny. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif P.S. How normal is this: I've seen the words on a comp. game begin to contort and change colors......turned out the game didn't HAVE any words! This was while walking around in Morrowind, then shortly after, I could swear the NPC's in the Mages' Guild started dancing. What kind of things do you people see in your hallucinations? P.P.S. I disagree Gandalf. Although I will gladly sleep in 'till 11 A.M. if allowed, when my alarm goes off at 7 A.M., I leap outta bed to push the "button to make the noise stop", and my mind is gone for a while. But that's little, considering I used to wake up at 3:30 A.M., and I did NOT want to do that. And if it matters, I've never pressed that "Snooze" button. |
Re: OT Poll: Amount of Sleep...
Personally, I sleep about 7 or 8 hours per night, with a record of (only) about 20 hours straight without sleep. Sooner or later I'm going to try and see if I can get some hallucinations going http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif See what the limits are.
|
Re: OT Poll: Amount of Sleep...
Well, I haven't had any interesting hallucinations by staying up for a long time. I've been up two and a half days but I guess that's not quite enough for good hallucinations. I do seem to recall hearing voices and thinking that someone spoke to me when there's nobody there. Oh, and seeing colored auras around people.
One time at a particular busy time during work at a previous job, I stayed overnight at the office working on an electronic circuit. I was very tired from not sleeping very much the previous few nights, and during that night I kept forgetting that the soldering iron is hot. So I got some burns on my hands because I kept touching the soldering iron tip, or clumsily dropping it on my hand. On a few occasions I was driving while very tired and repeatedly nodded off. I kept driving off the road onto the shoulder and then I luckily woke up. It was dangerous! I opened the windows and had the radio on full bLast to try to keep me awake but it didn't work that well. Another thing I did was I drove into a highway exit in the wrong direction. Then I saw headlights coming from ahead and I realized my mistake and quickly turned around. |
Re: OT Poll: Amount of Sleep...
My record is about 60 hours straight... but I never experienced any hallucinations or wierd side effects besides being really tired at that point. Though I do think I slept about 18 hours after that.
I can do alnighters with little more than a coke and a yawn http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...ies/tongue.gif |
Re: OT Poll: Amount of Sleep...
I havent ever gone more than 36. Re:Halucinations - I do remember bending down to tie my shoe in front of a car and having to jump sideways cuz all of a sudden it was hopping up and down and coming toward me.
That was friggin weird and happened around 30 hours I think. Turin |
