OT: IP address
How would I find out what IP address another computer would need to connect to mine? I have a D-Link router.

Re: OT: IP address
Internal LAN IP, or external WAN IP?
LAN IP: Go to Run in the start menu. Type "cmd" and hit enter. In the command prompt, type "ipconfig" and hit enter. WAN IP: Go to http://www.whatismyip.com/ |
Re: OT: IP address
There are many ways to do so, depending on whether you want to know your IP yourself or not. So I will stick with the lazy solution: connect to a site like www.whatismyip.com, and cut and paste your IP.

Re: OT: IP address
Side note: When I'm done, anyone want to try a test chat program?
How safe is the IP address to give out? What's the best way to make an internet program, given the above? Note: Almost done, but my brother needs the computer. Horrible amounts of homework after supper. It's getting ridiculous. We need another computer. Well, not really need, but we have one good one, one mac laptop and one old one. So it's kinda hard for anyone to get stuff done. |
Re: OT: IP address
You could use a service such as http://www.no-ip.com/ to get a URL in place of posting your IP address.

Re: OT: IP address
Speaking of IP addresses, does anyone know of any websites that let you type in an ip address and tells you the geographical position of that address?

http://all-nettools.com/toolbox
SmartWhois service. Type IP(or domain name) in the textfield and click GO. |
Re: OT: IP address
Thanks. I think I'll encrypt the IP into the program and have it look there for a list of servers.

Re: OT: IP address
Trying to hide your IP address is rather futile... Your computer by necessity broadcasts it whenever it makes a connection to the internet. Anybody that really wants to know what it is can find out easily enough...

Re: OT: IP address
I do hunt-downs on people all the time for various services. Most people dont realize how visible and needed an IP is. Internet connections arent 'open a line and hold it'. Everything you do is sent in packets and every packet has your IP. Every email, every newsgroup post, every file download, everything you do includes your ip if someone knows how to read it. Even your Posts here, chats, visitng web pages, although for those its only the admins at the site which can usually see it.
The only "alternative" is various ways to bounce off of another system so that they see that IP instead of yours. The responses go back to the bounce system which then puts your IP back in and sends it to you. You are still trackable but the path is more involved. So you might set up a program to hide your IP using that program but its worthless if you connect by some other means like sending them an email. |

So...What could someone do with my IP address?
|
Re: OT: IP address
Unless you run your own ISP, not much other than hack into your computer... which is where a decent firewall comes into play.

Re: OT: IP address
OK, thanks.

Re: OT: IP address
The biggest use of your IP as far as Im concerned is that it proves that you are you. Hiding an IP by using things like reMailers means you can never really claim that you siad anything. People can falsify a post by you which is hard to dispute.
As far as hacking (I prefer the term cracking actually) thats not as big a point as many think. All machines on the net are continually probed by automated scripts looking to see if you are running something they can get into. Hiding your IP doesnt stop that. Having it known applies to cracking only if there is some reason that someone specifically wants to attack YOUR machine instead of some random open box. If you plan to tick off alot of people then using things like reMailers starts to make sense. |
Re: OT: IP address
OK, thanks again.
