Starcraft
Got a copy of a game called "Starcraft" bundled with something I bought Last year (don't even remember what it was).
Thinking of installing it and checking it out. Anyone played it? Turin |
Re: Starcraft
It's a very popular RTS sci-fi game. Was a huge hit for people who like that sort of thing, back whenever it was released ... 1998?
May as well install it and give it a shot. Lots of people really like(d) it. Lots of good effort went into it, though personally I'm not much for typical RTS games... even atypically good ones, such as Starcraft. PvK |
Re: Starcraft
Many people still consider Starcraft to be the best RTS ever. The three races are really different, when in many games, the basic units of different factions are just reworked clones of one another. The game balance is excellent, and there are plenty of cool special abilities that add interesting dynamics to the game. It's a real shame that Blizzard decided to expand on the Warcraft world rather than do more Starcraft stuff.

Re: Starcraft
They always said Starcraft was just a vacation from fantasy games. It's a shame since Starcraft had a pretty good storyline and excellent gameplay. They are making a FPS game in the starcraft universe, but I doubt they will return to starcraft anytime soon. The way they ended the storyline amounted to them writing themselves into a corner.

Re: Starcraft
You can also download some maps/scenarios from imagemodserver
http://imagemodserver.mine.nu/nick/games/starcraftmaps/ The SST = small squad tactics Basically, it slows the game down, and makes each unit more important. You get resources quite slowly, so you typically only have a handful of units that you micromanage. You actually have to secure and hold territory in order to increase your resource production. The dying of the light is the opposite, for those who like to just throw troops around. You get a million resources to start with, and 5 or 10 minutes to build before the onslaught reaches you. (Note: you must select "use map settings" as the game type for those, or they'll be useless) |
Re: Starcraft
It was a lot of fun for its day, 98, and I do hope you will give it a spin.

Re: Starcraft
I have Starcraft and the add-on "Starcraft: Brood War" installed on my computer. I would say that it is worth playing the various campaigns. It's also very fun to play multiplayer, but I'm not sure about the status of the Online community. When it was new, the various places to play Online were overrun with cheaters and kids who liked to gang up on the new players. Some co-workers of mine still occasionally play Starcraft via "LAN party". I'd recommend at least checking it out. As said before, there are 3 distinct races to play and each is very different. Although I think they are well balanced, there is not a 1-for-1 matching of various units, capabilities, structures, etc.
Slick. |
Re: Starcraft
Wow. OK so something that highly-touted is well worth my time I'd guess!
Install it, I shall. And thank you all, I do. Turin |
Re: Starcraft
I played Star Craft also. I played Humans and those aliens through. Monsters I didin't accomplish (my interest stopped before I played all races through). At the end, it was a good game, but biggest problem was that at the end it went into clicking feast. Like so many other "real time" strategy game (MOO3 combat, Dune Emperor and hundred other games).
Having some special abilities on units (like Wraiths with cloacking) are no use if you have no time and place to use them properly. Despite its flaws, it is definately worth trying. |
Re: Starcraft
Grrrrr.. Now I got the urge to play Starcraft,.. grrrr..
David can be seen rumaging through his bookshelves in order to pull out his starcraft box... What? No CD in the box,.. grrrr.. David moves over to his CD storage racks,.. a quick scan of the side labels and he finds his precious Starcraft CD Woohooo!,.. Urika! NOTE: Any delays in SE5 production are now on your head... LOL just kidding. But Starcraft is definately one of the 'Great' RTS games out there. Makes Warcraft look like Bantha PooDoo. Cheers! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif |

Re: Starcraft
Carefull, I rendered RingWorlds today, and these are SE5 RingWorlds, so you can bet they are more powerfull than anything you can build in se4. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...ies/tongue.gif
Muahahahahaha, Hi ho, Hi, Ho, it's of to render I go, hi ho hi ho hi ho hi ho hi ho... Cheers! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif |
Re: Starcraft
It is a highly regarded RTS game. The fact that it was originally published in 1994, and the Brood Wars 'expansion' in 1998, would make one think that it would be useless today. But even though it runs in 640X480 mode the graphics are reasonable and it is quite playable. At least if you can handle RTS style games. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...s/rolleyes.gif Even though I don't like RTS games I downloaded it from the P2P system and tried it out simply because it is so popular and highly regarded.
The units are quite appealing. The Terran 'Siege Tank' for example makes a hefty 'clank' noise when it goes into or pulls out of siege mode, and the 'sergeant' character commanding it has classic command responses. The various Zerg units -- all 'monsters' of some sort or another -- make quite satisfyingly 'nasty' noises. My favorite for special effects is the Protoss 'Archon'. A black 'shadowy' form surrounded by a glow of energy, it's the classic metaphor of extreme power. In combat it attacks by shooting 'lightning' from its hands rather like the Emperor in Star Wars, all the while chanting 'Destroy!' - 'Annihilate!' - 'Obliterate!' ... etc. This unit is guaranteed to bring out the inner 10-year-old in a gamer. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif But as fun as the individual units are this remains an RTS game and true to form it's impossible for a human to keep up. No matter which race you play and how hard you push to develop your forces you will always get over-run by an impossible wave of AI forces. I finally got tired of using the cheat codes just to survive and deleted the game. |

Re: Starcraft
I play this in teams on multiplayer with a bunch from work, typically I play Terran, which can be very effective defensively and the others play Zerg or Protoss. I defend all three bases and they attack. Its very effective( both the strat and the game) at relieving AWS (After Work Stress).
Its a cool game and definately worth playing especially if you can get a friendly group together. Rasorow |
Re: Starcraft
Yeah, great game, i mostly play Zerg, they've really powerfull air units, bah, the Guardian (or samethign like that) i think it's name is.

Re: Starcraft
There is something oddly satisfying when your ground pounders ae shooting the hell out of some organic facility. Oooohhhhh the sound of those weapons just shooting away....... must find Star Craft disk..... Must find....

Re: Starcraft
There's one thing I've always wondered about Starcraft: why are the buildings so big on the inside and so small on the outside? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif
And now I've caught the must-play-Starcraft bug too, but I lost my Brood War disk, though I still have the Starcraft one. I wonder if SJ's maps are SC+BW or SC only... |

I'll whip up some more if you want. (Its fairly straightforward adjustments to stock maps, and then test-playing to make sure the AI won't lock up on a bad start position.) |

Bumpity-bump-bump!
Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!! Hours and hours of time wasted so far! Fun game. Does anyone know what Structure the "Covert Operations" add-on is supposed to attach to? I "found" one but I can't seem to build anything next to it, and I need it to Cloak my Ghost Spotters! Thanks, Turin |

I believe the Covert Operations module is an add on for the Science facility. Can't really remember though. |

Re: Starcraft
Science facility. You need Factory and Space Port built first though, and for Factory you need Barracks first. For Barracks you need Command Center =D.

Re: Starcraft
LOL, Ah Starcraft. One of the greats. It was a great follow-up to Warcraft II. Didn't like WC3 as much. Starcraft really capped that series well.
Unfortunately, someone stole my BroodWar expansion CD... |

Do as I did, and pick up a new copy of both disks in the discount section. Less than 48 hours later, you'll find your original disk. --- After that, whether you sell your extra copy or use it to play LAN games, is up to you http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif |

Star Craft won't run on my XP PC..... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif

Re: Starcraft
The academy dosen't have any add-ons.
Command center can add-on either a nuke or a sat uplink. Factory add-on is a machine shop. Starport add-on is a control tower. Science Facility can add-on either a Physics lab or a covert ops. If you have a covert ops lab sitting there in the field, you need to build a science facility to fly over there and dock with it. (Or build it on site, but that may be more risky) |
Re: Starcraft
yeah strange it runs fine on w2k too
|
Re: Starcraft
ups, i should check what page i'm reading next time before posting......
