OT: Decent P2P?
Just recently got back to Canada for a couple weeks visit with my folks, and I decided to take advantage of the fact that they've got a cable modem with no download limit. Problem is, the P2P client I normally use doesn't work (it gets half-way thru loading and stops), and most of the other ones I've found have been pretty useless. I've tried eDonkey, Filetopia, Phex, eMule and WinMX. So far the only one I've managed to get to start downloading (let alone find something in a search) is eMule, which is currently telling me it will be finished downloading one song in 195 Days, 14 hours and 8 minutes. Little help anybody?

Re: OT: Decent P2P?
E-Mule is best for cable connection (I have it too). It takes a while before it gets into speed but when it does it will download it much faster then 195 days. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif
For music files kazaa lite is best. Note that it's "lite" and not standard kazaa, as it has no spyware in it. For everything else E-Mule is best. Just leave it running in the background and it will get your stuff. A tip - never pay attention to what E-Mule says about how long a download will take, it's never true. Also, when choosing what file to download, pay attention to availability number (higher=better, meaning more people have it) as it influences how fast you will get a file. Complete sources tab is also important as it tells you % of people that have complete file. If %=0 don't even bother to download as no one has complete file and you will never finish downloading it. Hope this helps. |
Re: OT: Decent P2P?
I would prefer the GNU software like BitTorrent for P2P if I used any. But so far all of the ones Ive seen would cause problems on my machines. Not enough controls over what can be shared.

Re: OT: Decent P2P?
The one I normally use at home (whose name will not be mentioned here since it shares it's name with a term for illegally distributed software), is really good (aside from the name), but doesn't seem to want to work on my parents' computer. I'm using eMule at the moment and having a reasonable amount of success, but can't seem to get my hands on a copy of Kazaa Lite that actually works.

Re: OT: Decent P2P?
Fyron is quite right. Please note the forum rules:
6) 'CRACKS' OR COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT: We do not permit the posting of information that will enable other people to use pirated software or to evade the copyright laws. Please do not post serial numbers or CD keys, copyrighted media or links to sites that contain file-sharing software or such information. Also, do not post ways to cheat in games. All such references will be deleted and a warning will be issued to the poster. Arkon, owning a piece of CD-music and downloading (and hence allow uploading in P2P) it are still two different things (at least under the law here) as these are 2 different distribution channels. See, you have a right to use the music on your PC and you might have a right of a copy (depends on your legal system) but most certainly you don't have a right to offer the music to the world to download. But YMMV. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif |

Re: OT: Decent P2P?
Well, I could very well be one of those nasty little leechers we've all read about who downloads but doesn't share. You never know. Anyway, on a slightly less touchy subject, does anyone know what Windows Service Pack 2 actually does? As far as I can tell it just royally fouled up my machine at home, and I didn't really recover until I'd uninstalled SP2 and reinstalled WinXP. So now I'm just wondering, am I missing anything good?
