OT: Drugs....

Ok, so here's a poll for all you forum readers. This one is completely OT, so feel free to disregard it. However, here's the poll. Have you ever done drugs for a non-medicinal purpose (for example, any "recreational" drug). This is a very personal poll, so I guess it's a good thing that polls are anonymous http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif

Re: OT: Drugs....

I never felt the need to take drugs in my life. I like some pain killers, but find even those effect me in ways that I do not like. I think it best to say that I like to be able to think for myself and not have drugs do it for me.

However I have seen many good friends and realatives destroyed by a drug habit. I lost my GF a few years ago to it as well.

Re: OT: Drugs....

If alcohol counts, then yes, I have done recreational drugs, yes, I still take, and I only regretted once (when I drank vodka with a few Russians, and we all proceeded to vomit afterwards).

If not, then the only time I took a drug for non-medicinal purposes was some codine after a particularly rough night staying up with a friend of mine. After that, I was physically, mentally, and emotionally drained, but I couldn't sleep. I knew another one of my friends had some perscription narcotics from... I don't even remember what. I asked if I could have some, and took about one and a half doses of codeine. When I woke up (sixteen hours later), I felt a little better, and I was back to "normal" a few more hours after that.

Other than that, haven't touched the stuff.

Did some stupid things on this subject 10 to 12 years ago.
I never came in (financial)problems or became (really) addicted, but I know now that it was more luck than wisdom.

But I can not say that I regret it, I see it as an sort of learning period. And I really know what I'm talking about right now. (not the ussual stuff : if you use it a few times you are addicted, or all Users are junks and will steal your car radio etc etc......... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif )

I must also mention that our (the Dutch) perception of drugs is completly different than the American way....

Did it, dont regret it, but I wouldnt recommend it. Its kindof on par with other memories of "wow that was stupid of me" like playing in the roofs of really tall condemned structures, hopping trains, cliff diving into unknown waters, playing with dangerous animals, and hitchhiking planes. Memories I wouldnt give up but definetly not something Id recommend to anyone I liked. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Re: OT: Drugs....

Been there, Done that, trying to forget it all. For the most part, I'd agree with GP. Made some pretty impressive memories and now have some really neat stories to relate to others, but on the whole a very bad part of my life. Unlike others here, I DID have a serious problem for about 6 months. Altogther I spend 2 or 3 years on the wrong road of life. And it's really really hard to get off that road after a short while.

I see a lot of my friends who are still on that road or are starting on it and I try to warn them but unfortunatly, they don't listen. There was a small group of us who all decided we'd had enough of spending an insane amount of money (once spent $3000 in 2 days myself!!) and we all decided to quit together. If we hadn't I don't know if any of us could have. It was hard.

I had to keep busy somehow so I got myself 4 jobs. 2 were full time, one part time and the other filled in where I wasn't working. 16 hours every day except for Monday's where I only worked 8.

On the otherhand, I gained IMO some unique skills. I have now developed the ability to Detect Addtictions. After a short time, I can now tell if someone is having an addiction to something (drugs, alcholhe or other) because I know what the signs are. In some cases, I can actully tell what the drugs are because of physical manafestations. eg: cocaine addicts skin begins to look almost transparent.

Didn't mean to spew all that, but hey you asked for it http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Well got drunk twice if that counts as a (drug)I would NEVER drink again after time number two where bad things happened.
I'm 17 so not only is it illegal for me in the first place which made getting drunk DUMBER then normal since I'm not a drinker I downed a coffee mug full of burbone streight up, with no food or anything else in my stomach heh BAAAAD TIMES. Worst part is I have a bad gag reflex so I couldn't throw any of that crap in my stomach up I just kept having churning nausea until I got a brief spout of diahrea (SP?) where I was wishing that I had just thrown up lol.

Either way the headache is also NOT worth it in the morning I tell yah, ouch. Well other then those there are dozens of reasons I can give for never getting drunk or doing drugs EVER again.
(not to mention I think alcohol tastes like fermented chicken piss if ever there was one.)

Re: OT: Drugs....

Nah, you just had cheap bourbon http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Never had the hangover nastiness, but then again the group I drink with (NEVER alone), all of us go for the better quality over low price. The one time I got sick was because the Russians were very persuasive (a "shot" is really, "exhale, down one shot, grab another, down that, wait about five seconds, then stick some fruit in your mouth") about "just one more drink", and I drank far too much. A liter of Grey Goose, plus some gin before hand, between three people. And the few times I have had the cheap stuff, it was bad enough that I didn't drink much unless it was VERY mixed.

But really, in the US it's better to lay off all that, at least until you're almost at 21. Until then, it's a lot harder to get anything worth drinking (read: will not make you sick, and is actually enjoyable). Plus most of the people you would be drinking with will do insanely stupid and dangerous things. As the age goes up, there is (usually) a bit more responsibility, and a few people willing to stay (relatively) sober to keep things under control. Ask the Vikings for more details about a safe, enjoyable drinking experience, should the occasion arise in the future http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Re: OT: Drugs....

If it's classified as a narcotic or controlled substance, I've probably done it. And probably done too much as well. I haven't touched any of the 'hard' stuff in the Last 4 years, but I smoke, both tobacco and FAR less frequently, cannabis (hash or weed), and of course go out for a few drinks every now and then. To be honest, I'm not a huge fan of alcohol, and only really drink because I live in Dublin and it's just part of the culture. There really isn't anything else to do after 6pm on a Friday or Saturday but head out to the pub with your friends. But I find the enjoyment one gets from alcohol is too often not worth the after-effects. To be sure there's been a few nights where I've staggered home absolutely twisted, woken up the next morning feeling as if I'd stood a bit to close to an atomic bLast, but still thought it was worth it. Other times I've woken up with a bit of a dry mouth and a slight headache and thought it wasn't worth it.
I've been on the losing end of a battle with cigarettes since the beginning of the year when I resloved to quit, but I have no doubt I'll succeed eventually.
I guess that answers questions 1 & 2, which only leaves 3. Regrets? None. Not a single one. I might look back and think 'I could have handled that situation a bit better', but I don't regret anything I took, or anything I did. I know I've probably knocked a good few years off my life, but frankly I don't care. All the crazy things I did when leading that lifestyle has made me who I am, and I wouldn't trade that for anything. And I'd really rather be able to say, "I've been there, I've done that, and I know really not a great idea," rather than, "I've never done it but I'm told it's not a great idea."
Plus I figure, when I have a son/daughter, and he gets to a certain age, I can sit him down and say, "I've done them all son, and I probably won't be around to see you finish univercity because of it." And if that doesn't keep the little blighter on the straight and narrow, I don't know what will.

Re: OT: Drugs....

Personally, not that I smoke it, but I do believe that "pot" should be legal to buy, but restricted as alcohol is. It should be ok to grow in your own home, so long as you do not sell it without a license or permit.

It was legal for a very long time and even though I know many people think it is bad, it really is not. If anything it will improve the economy because everyone who uses it will eventually get the munchies and head for nearest burger joint or 7-11.

I will say though, that POT does effect people That commerical where the guy is down in a basement smoking pot with a friend and he says that POT has never effected him. Then you hear his mom yell at him to take out the trash. I know first hand that that is true. I can point to at least eight people I know that smoke on a regular bases who would qualify as 30 something pot retards.

Pot does make you stupid, lazy, and fat. But hey, if you want to enjoy it, by all means, I say make it legal and let people make the choice for themselfs if they want to use it or not.

Additionally, at a bare minimum, it does need to be legalized for medical use. PERIOD. No except to this.

Right now they do not want it legal for medical use because the drug companies would loose money. We all know this, and if there is one thing I hate more than I hate insurance companies, its dirty politics when it comes to helping people live a better life who would otherwise not.

Canada has legalized it for medicinal use for several years now. Only it's not easy to become "registered" to use for medical purposes. And, that said, it may be legal to posses and use for medical purposes, it still isn't legal to purchase it. Go figure.

Re: OT: Drugs....

My thoughts/ opinions/ experiences spewed out below in random order.

I've answered yes to all three questions, but only because I drink and have known hangovers.

I think the use of chemical substances to enhance/altar our perception and/or enjoyment is a fundamental part of human nature, and like anything else that can be bad for your health, is fine as long as you can keep it under control.

Unfortunately our society has no idea of moderation: The accepted reasoning is that if something is good, then more of it must be better. This isn't always true: A glass of wine a day is a good thing. Two bottles a day will get you involved in a traffic accident/ beaten up in a gutter/ liver failure. A burger every now and then is OK, but eating twenty burgers a week will kill you as sure as smoking forty cigarettes a day. The odd bit of puff isn't a bad thing, but excessive pot will turn you into a vegetable. This attitude of excess is mostly a by-product of the rampant capitalism that dominates our culture and that turns many positive or neutral things in our society into negative things. Added to that a culture which celebrates ignorance and irresponsible behaviour and you've got a recipe for disaster. If we could break our culture of excess then many of the world's problems (not just substance-related ones) would be vastly improved overnight.

Another part of the problem is the addictive nature of many drugs (cigarettes, heroin etc) which is quite often an artificial property introduced by the people who profit from addiction (ie the people selling the stuff.)

Personally I've never tried pot, but I'm interested to give it a go. The one opportunity I had I happened to be the designated driver, so had to reluctantly decline for safety reasons. I could probably be persuaded to try ecstasy (I don't dance, but I've heard it's worth taking some before sex) but I wouldn't ever try LSD, cocaine, heroin or anything else along those lines. As for more exotic things like toad-licking and whatnot, I'd have to inform myself more of the risks and effects before deciding. I'm always very wary of taking things like painkillers, even if there's a valid medical reason.

Pot should definitely be legal. In fact I'd go further and say that all drugs should be legal. Why? Several reasons:
1- It's none of the government's business what i choose to put into my body
2- Of course, it is the government's business if I get messed up on speed and then run over a little old lady. however, bringing such substances into the mainstream would make it easier to prevent and control such antisocial behaviour.
3- It's hypocritical to allow fags and booze but prohibit other substances.
4- Much of the medical harm and addiction from hard drugs comes from dealers mixing it up with brick dust/ rat poison/ whatever else they can get their hands on. If the industry was legalised and regulated this kind of crap wouldn't happen. (When was the Last time you bought a bottle of wine that had been padded out with bleach by an unscrupulous supplier?)
5- Another of the main dangers of drug use is that safe dosages aren't very well understood. This problem is compounded by number 4 above. If the substances were controlled and regulated and forced to compply to certain standards of content and labelling, drug use would be much safer.
6- If legalised and regulated, the long-term effects of drugs and the best treatments for them would be much easier to study and understand. This information could be used to inform and educate people about the risks they are taking, safe dosages, and maybe to produce less addictive/ harmful types of the substances.
7- Bringing drugs into the mainstream would kill off all the organised crime associated with it. Just look at alcohol prohibition in the US in the twenties.
8- People with addictions and other problems linked to drugs would be more likely to seek and find help if they weren't branded as criminals by their drug use.
9- The money saved in hunting, arresting and detaining drug criminals could be used to help the people suffering from their effects, with cash left over for a tax cut or improvement in other public services. Not to mention the money the government could make from taxing drugs.

That's what I think, annyway. It's not a perfect system, but neither is the system we have now and at least the one above is consistent and fair. I firmly believe that legalising drugs wouldn't increase their usage. People who want drugs now have no trouble finding them. Making them legitimate might even reduce some of their appeal to rebellious types, and encourage moderate (rather than excessive) usage. Legalising drug use doesn't necessarily mean encouraging it- I would hope for the exact opposite: If legalised, education as to the negative effects of substances should be used to discourage their use (just as kids are now warned off smoking) and there should be laws and social pressure about times and places where drug use is innappropriate. For people who consistently abuse their freedoms (ie driving under the influence or otherwise endangering ppl, or seriously jeopardising their own health through excessive use) the courts could make them go into rehab and get any psychiatric help/ counselling to deal with the causes of their addictions.

That's my 0.02 anyway, but it'll never happen.

Heehee. Possibly true. Actually much more so in my younger days when my spouts of wisdom were subtly likely to confuse and generate thought more than actually answer a question. But if you ever met me in person I still have much of that essence about me. Esepcially if its in a non-serious gathering of some sort.

I have never used drugs. I have never smoked or drank alcohol, and I never will.

When I was in elementary school, some police officers came to the school to do a presentation about the evils of drug addiction. They completely convinced me back then to never use drugs. I was very fortunate of that, because my high school had a big drug problem. When we left the building when school finished, it was normal to see fellow students trying to sell drugs to us on the street in front of the school. One of my best friends started using drugs and consequently, he and I drifted apart and I lost a friend.

Good thing, too: very addictive personality type; unable to stop reading a book or playing a computer game or eating chocolate or working until reality absolutely forces it (fall asleep, wife screams, feel like puking, ravenously hungry).
Before you use any of these things, check out the skeletons in your family closet very carefully. Heredity can be destiny if you don't learn from history.
Plus, how many people lie on their deathbed wishing they'd wasted more of their life and money on such things?
