What Do You Do While Your Turns Process

What do you do while your game of SE IV process the turn? For me, your looking at it. I browse the forum. I raid the frig, I pester one of the cats, or I go to the bathroom.

I listen to MP3's or an internet radio station while I play and sometimes run a DVD in the back ground for something to listen too.

I don't play against the AI (if that is what you mean). And if I'm waiting on a PBW player (who's on and doing turns with me in a 1x1), I check the forum(s), chat with my wife or hug my daughter, refill my Mountain Dew, or work on a graphic (if I have one in the process).

I normally read a book (military sci-fi mostly)... the problem is when i got too engrossed in the book and forget to play the game...

Maybe i should read more dull books....

In my present game (which is at date 2468.3 with up to 5000 ships per empire) I go shopping, have a meal or watch TV just to mention a few possibilities. The turns take usually about 2 hours but if combats take place even much more!!
And before you ask I've got a very old computer (233Mhz) PII).

me?, I look at the empire numbers counting up for 2 seconds, or I click the annoying Messages telling me such and such value is erroneous etc. This Last one is also what I do when I start a new game or open a pbw turn for that matter.

I am always fearful that the game will RCE on me. However I have not seen one of those in some time, knock on wood.

Well with my current game I type up notes on the previous turn.

Ouch. That must hurt. That is a long game indeed. How many years it has been going? 3 or more?

I write, wondering how the next turn is going to change the story!

Re: What Do You Do While Your Turns Process

One of the reasons I PLAY games like this is because of long processing time. Im not as organized as I should be. So while its processing I check my work windows, check on the kids, do some chores, remember to empty my bladder and feed myself. I even occassionally have a thought that I should probably do some exercise. Its also nice to realize that the house is dark, everyone has gone to bed, and Im actually feeling tired myself.

I am hoping that Aaron with SEV puts much effort into things like AI without making too many decisions such as "nice but turn processing would take too long" or else SEV could kill me.

Re: What Do You Do While Your Turns Process

On average my turn time grows with each turn. I find that I have more and more things that need to be done each turn thus the time to do the turn grows.

The processing time gives me time to relax from my job of running a spread sheet empire to focus on the really important things in my life, eating, watching TV, sleeping, and did I mention eating?

This Last turn I ran for the STM game I am play testing was about an hour. I am at around turn 105 or so. I have a small to modest empire, 5th place against the AI, and in a bit of a tough spot at the moment. I am defending WP's while my AI neighbors make war with me. It provides for some fun, but has delegated into the long-term strategy of secure, hold, plan, build, plan, and counter attack. This is where the RPG fun comes form and I guess for many of us the thrill of writing a story.

It is fun to imagine yourself as the leader of a vast empire, struggling day to day to keep your empire secure and your citizens’ safe. But the burden of paper work has sucked the thrill out of your job as completely as the vacuum of space empties your lungs of oxygen. Never the less, as the leader of your people you suck it up and press on. Hell you never know when one of your great master war plans will pay off and you'll get to watch a vid of your ships annihilating your enemy's forces. Oh the simply joys one can look forward to as ruler.

Blink. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...es/biggrin.gif Heehee... But before I had a high-end processor running my computer, and turn processing actually took a mesurable amount of time, I used to sketch out new shipsets or write. Now it takes until I've reached turn 200 or so before things slow down enough for me to do anything in between. Ah, the marvels of technology.

Wait....listen to music....and once the turn processing time gets to extraordinarily long, I chat with people on MSN, eat, watch some TV, etc. Maybe even do some homework, if the mood happens to strike me that I should be doing something remotely productive http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

Re: What Do You Do While Your Turns Process

Yeah, usually I too just look at at the screen while the A.I.'s turns are processed, especially in the early part of the game when the turns go by more quickly. Later, when the turns start taking more than a few minutes I start to read books, eat food, clean up my room, etc. I can't browse the forum because I have Windows ME and SEIV crashes if I use ALT-TAB during the A.I.'s turns.

I'm in one PBW game. My gaming tends to go through phases. My current one seems to be COH. It's hard to tell, because a lot of my time is now taken up programming.

The game stated about a year ago and I continue it just because it pushes SE IV and my computer to the very limits. And my computer runs for 6 1/2 years without any hardware problem. That was good quality.

I go through spirts as well. Right now I am playing a test game of STM as the Klingons and finding that my attention is wondering. I am in three PBW games at the moment and just doing basic turn stuff. Not a lot of fun.

I have been playing freelance off and on but loosing interest in it fast.

Entertainment is like the taste of food. Even if you really like steak, you're not going to want it all the time. In fact, after enough steak, you might want salad for a while, or cabbage rolls.

Mmmm, cabbage rolls...

Having said that, I wonder if I could exist on just pizza. Every day. Hmmmmm, no more tacos?!?! Guess I gotta agree with the "Narf" on this one!

Re: What Do You Do While Your Turns Process

I now sleep between turns. My turn times are about six minutes long now. I remember when I used to sleep while waiting for the clean line buzzar to go off every minute and a half at work. A cold dark room coupled with having to ware a clean room uniform under thick chemical gear will do that to you at 3am in the morning.

God I really do miss those days..... they seem almost like a dream now, but back then it was a crap job, but now, in reflection, it was really a great job. GD chinese imports!

Done it! Years ago I spent 10 years as a pizza delivery driver (yes, 10 years. It's better money than you think). As such I lived on pizza 5 days a week for those 10 years.

And I'm still not sick of it!

MMMMmmmmm, pizza...

RTH2 takes 45 minutes to run.

I have been runnning it at work.

It brings my computer down to a crawl.

It is a brand new computer.

So i eat lunch, and go look at the plant floor and turn my monitor off.

If we're talking playing the AI, I've never had turn-processing take more than 1 minute, so I just sit and grin at the screen watching my pretty little ships scooting around. Weeeee!

Then again I've never played this on less than a P3.
