New Game: Power Game

We've all done it at least once, set up a game with 5000 racial points and other settings just to kick the crap out of the AI. But how well would you fare against other human players that have done the same thing?

Welcome to the Power Game!

Starting resources: 100000
Starting planets: 3
Home planet value: Good
Score display: Own
Technology level: Low
Racial points: 5000
Quadrant type: FQM (Standard) Dense Paradise
Quadrant size: Medium or Large (player vote)
Event frequency: None
Event severity: N/A
Technology cost: Low (yup,low)
Victory conditions: Last man standing
Maximum units: 20000
Maximum ships: 20000
Computer players: None
Computer difficulty: High (in case we lose a player)
Computer player bonus:
Neutral empires: No
Other game settings: No intel (spend your RP's elsewhere), no surrender, no tech trading

We've got two so looking for six more!

Could we have the Talisman Banned, too? Also, what about population trading?

Re: New Game: Power Game

What is wrong with the Talisman. I plan on using missiles. And pop trading, why not lol.

Pop trading is fine. I have no problem with the talisman but I'll put it to vote when we get all eight players.

Re: New Game: Power Game

The Talisman removes a very large part of the game by making combat sensors, ecm, training and experience completely irrelevant. It might be balanced at a cost of around 5000 race points and a much higher research cost, but as it is in stock, it's practically suicide to not take Deeply Religious if it isn't Banned and the game isn't expected to be very short. Low tech cost makes it even worse, as the Talisman will be researched much sooner.

Re: New Game: Power Game

Well okay no talisman. Although I'm still going to remove a very large part of the game and make combat sensors, ecm, training and experience irrelevant by using my Plasma Missile V lol =D.

Douglas, with all due respect, I disagree. There are ways to defeat anything in this game, you just have to be creative. Also, even with low tech cost the religous player will be behind in other tech areas so it does balance out.

I guarantee you the ONLY way to defeat the Talisman is extreme numerical and technological superiority. Yes, a religious empire will be behind in other tech areas because of his religious tech research, but not nearly enough to make up for it past the early game. Edit: especially when you consider that the religious player will not need to research combat sensors.

Go right ahead. Just be prepared to lose against any fleet well equipped with Point Defense Cannons V.

That is the question you must ask. Are you well equipped with PDCV? I have a new strategy I'm itching to try out involving missiles http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...es/biggrin.gif.

True, but this is a game where 'gamey' is not only acceptable it's kinda expected! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif

Douglas, like I said, once we get enough players we'll put it up for a vote and see how it comes out, I'm easy to get along with. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

Yes, a bit gamey. But hard to stop/control. I have a theory about setting up guidlines that can't be "monitored". So, if one said no pop-trading, and you found a planet that had pop of one empire on a planet of another, how could you said someone violated the pop-trading rule if you can't prove they didn't capture a planet and transfer pop?

I wish there were more controls for setting up a game http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif so that checking a box stopped it and not depending on players to.

I haven't come across very many players of SE4 that would blatantly violate house rules like that...

Possibly true (and I tend to agree) but if you ran across an empire that had 3 different pop types (counting his own), would you automatically assume he didn't violate the pop-trading rule or wonder if he had made a trade with somone else?

Sometimes, not coming across many players who violate "house rules" means you just didn't catch them (or were too niave to suspect it).

I tend to play around a pretty close circle of players. I'd say around 20-25 different players. Do I trust them? Yep, pretty much. They are active in the forum and I get a feel for how they play by comparing them to their comments. But what about that stray player that joins a game that you know nothing about? And ruins the game by breaking "house-rules"?

Most recently, BTW, Geo and I played a game and I let him generate the map and set up the game. He's one of the players I trust implicitly. Lost that game, BTW. Never thought for a moment he used the master password to inspect things.

And a lot of other players fall into that Category of trust.

Reagan kind of said it best..."Trust but verify!". Not that I like quoting Reagan but I just prefer a better set of rules so there is no question about what a player did...just for that unknown player that may have joined a game I'm in.

Doesn't mean that it won't (or that you won't wonder if someone did). And if either applies, as Murphy has his fun, it will be a game you care a lot about http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif.

Game full!! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...es/biggrin.gif

Fyron and Slynky, while it would be nice to have more control over the game rules I go with the outlook of trust a player until they prove unworthy of that trust. I have yet to see anyone prove unworthy.

BTW - My race pics are from the Spelunker race in David Gervais's Miner Mod. Apparently, not on the drop-down list.

Yeah, the one player I can't e-mail hasn't uploaded his turn. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif I'll give him a little more time due to the holiday.
