Dimension X: Home World Wars

Does this sounds interesting to anyone? Ten good starting planets, low starting tech, and no colonization. You play the entire game with the ten planets you start with, plus any you can capture from your opponents.

If there's any interest in it I'll set it up. This might be a good hook for Dimension X 2.

What size of map?

geoschmo January 5th, 2005 05:34 PM

Re: PBW Game idea

That would depend on the number of players I think. Not huge in any case, but a ten planet start can be spread out over several systems. Too small a map and people will be sharing homesystems.

Make sure players have enough astroids to mine.................

geoschmo January 5th, 2005 06:19 PM

Re: PBW Game idea

Well, with a stock map you'd have asteroids and a lot of planets that you would normally be colonizing to remote mine if you want. Trade would help as well. But even without that you can support a lot of ships with ten good homeworlds. Especially without the cost of building and maintaining colony ships, and queue usage on all those little colonies that aren't really generating any income for you. At first your empire would be much stronger then you are used to. Of course the late game empires would be smaller than normal, but everybody would have the same handicap there. And less micromanagment. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Re: PBW Game idea

ok i am in.

10 planets. would we limit players to rock and ice or would gas be available as well ??

Remember ED and I get first dibs on Dim x3 as two happened aready.

would be cool if you used a balance map with tons of empty systems http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif So it would be a regular map with lots of space to deal with and only planets in the players core system

So I guess you could design a galaxy set up with no planets or astroids generate a map then go in and do player placement. Space is Vast and Empty and we have the pbw game to prove it.

That would be cool as their would still be nebulas black holes , stars , storms to play with.

Would you allow stellar so players could build rings or spheres.

Ragnarok-X January 5th, 2005 06:49 PM

Re: PBW Game idea

Edit the settings.txt in a way that all planets, apart from playerplanets have a minimum value of 120%. That will help as well.

I don't see how it matters? All homeworlds are the same size, and you can not colonize anything.

Re: PBW Game idea

Interesting...

Build a ringworld then use it for remote mining.

If a homeworld is glassed could it be recolonized or just left barren as a warning to others.

I would be in if it is set to two days or more turns.

geoschmo January 5th, 2005 09:01 PM

Re: PBW Game idea

I could use the balance mod to create the map. That way there are lot's of choice planets to use for remote mining.

I would not mind allowing you to recolonize glassed homeworlds. I'm not sure the guy who glassed it would give you the chance though. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif On the other hand I toyed with the idea of making it a mod game and removing colony tech, allowing you to fleet with bases, making remote mining not reduce planet value, and making the space yard component smaller, so you can get those remote bases setup sooner.

Stellar manip would be on, so you could use warp openers.

Creating a ringworld to use for remote mining? I'm not sure it's the most efficent way to generate resources, but if you can pull it off I'd allow it. And tip my hat to you. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif

48 hour turns would be the absolute maximum I'd want if I were playing in it. I prefer 24 personally, but will set it up for 48.

Re: PBW Game idea

I thought you could only remote mine moons. Not planets. If that is so, then the Balance mod planets would do no good. If not, then I guess I've never remote mined a planet (LOL)...just moons.

Phoenix-D January 5th, 2005 10:52 PM

Re: PBW Game idea

You can remote mine a planet, just not if it has a colony on it.

Only question so far is how many racial points are we using? Any number is fine with me.

Re: PBW Game idea

No mod.

I thought about going with 0 racial points, but I'm guessing that 2000 would be more palatable to the general public. So let's go with that. I'll update the page in a bit.

Re: PBW Game idea

Naw, I don't think we need to ban any techs. I'm only turning off intel because the potential for a succesful PPP would be so devastating in this game. I think it would be very difficult to have enough intel facilities to do any serious damage, but if you could pull it off you'd be able to kill someone without firing a shot.

Talisman is powerful, but it's not invincible. Same thing for crystal armor. We've all talked about it enough that we've all got our strategies for dealing with them. As always it will come down to who executes better.

i disagree with intel... as you have 10 planets... you would have to choose between storage , system abilities or intel....

It should be an option.... plus ppp does not work too well on homeworlds.

I was thinking that at first Tesco. But while talking to Fyron he pointed out that two players could team up and one could defend their position while the other guy scraps all his facilites and builds intel. You could get a pretty fearsome number of points I think.

As far as PPP not working on homeworlds well, I think that is only the case with the actual HOMEWORLD. When you have more then one starting planet they are all called homeworlds, but one is treated as THE homeworld by the game.

Pretty sure that only _the_ homeworld is protected... Other "homeworlds" are valid targets for events, so I see no reason why intel projects (which are events that you caused to happen) would be any different.

edit: wee post at the same time!

Ah crap! I really like this idea, but I'm still in the land of 1.49. I may pop in and ask how the thing is going once in a while, though. I would really like to try this sort of game. Maybe I can sell the idea to the crew over there.

(OT: Any further news on the progress of SEV? If it looks like it's coming any time soon, I will probably wait and make the Version jump then. After 14 months in the trenches, I think I'm getting near ready to be battered about in a rougher game.)

Upgrading from 1.49 to 1.91 is so simple. It takes like 5 minutes or less. Why wait? It doesnt screw up anything youve got going.

Er, don't you know that 1.49 is pre-gold? To upgrade, he'd have to buy SEIV Gold. With SEV getting closer, why spend money on a game that would be abandoned soon?

Re: Dimension X: Home World Wars

Last call for anyone interested in getting in on this game. We've got 11 players now. If more want to join that's fine, but that will be enough to make a decent go of it. I'm planning on starting the game as soon as we get the Last of the empire files uploaded, unless someone else jumps in before that.

To review the settings:

48 hour auto turns
10 Good homeworlds
No intel
2000 racial points

No use of colony tech, except to recolonize a homeworld that get's glassed.

I've decided not to use a mod for the game, except I will be making a server only mod to control the AI and keep it from making colony ships in case anyone misses their turns.

I also had talked about using the balance mod to make the map, but never made a decision on that. I need to make sure noone was planning on being a "none" atmosphere race if I'm going to do that.

This game is a real challenge to a "builder" like myself. My strategy has always been "build a good empire and you'll do well," not "go out and kill the other empires b4 they get good."

Balancing resources is the biggest headache. 175 ships supported by remote mining... ugh!

Butt hay! Challenge is why we get up in the morning, right? Having a lot of fun with it; hope others are too.
