Some newbie questions from an always newbie player

here some questions I was not able to answer and I would like to include in the addenda:

1. Which target the heal power of a commander will hit in a province with several units/commanders with afflictions ? which afflictions are first recovered ?

2. An immortal (or regenerating) unit does recover from afflictions caused by magical items such like "magical eyes" ?

3. If I move an army in a province where I'm storming a castle, does the army join in the battle ?

4. Does PD (and army) recover hit points (and units in the case of PD) between a magical attack and a normal attack in the same turn ?

5. Does all the magical attack point to the same province stack together (as an example, if I make some call of the wilds and some arouse hungers against the some enemy province, does I have a single attack or several ?) ... and if one of this attack is from "neutral" troop (like ghost riders) and other from controlled troops (like call of the wilds) does always the first (neutral) goes before the others ? And what about if I'm teleporting in the province with some units ?

6. Does units patrolling a province with a castle always retreat in the castle if they loose the battle ? Also if I give them the retreat command ?

7. If all the units on the battlefield are totally (100%) shock resistance, an enemy commander scripted to cast shock damaging spells (like shimmering fields) does cast them anyway ?

8. If I let on the battlefield units like undead or magic that not rout but without leaders, they still fight or disappear ? And what about normal berserker units ?

9. Does the magic gems obtained by The Sickle who crops is pain goes to the commander or the magic gems pool ?

10. Does Awe also protect from spells targeted to a single unit ?

... I think is enough for the moement

thank you and good play

From what I can tell, no.

This seems to vary by spell AFAIK.

Undead and mindless magic beings are supposed to dissolve without leadership, and they mostly, but I've seen some leaderless vine ogres fight back when attacked, but very rarely.

1) %-chance of spontanous regrowth of limbs etc. is rolled for every unit independently.

2) Immortals and recuperating units heal afflictions after they got rid of the item. Regenerating units do not heal afflictions.

3) No. Check the order of actions in a turn, manual page ... dunno, it's easy to find.

4) Yes. (and No) Basically, PD is always "fresh" each fight as long as you own the prov. Unit Healing is a seperate from battles, both those caused by spells and by movement.

6) Can't remember seeing units retreat to neighbouring provinces as long as I had a castle. not 100% shure.

7) Mmmh. Maybe. Could be bugged.

8) Berserking units do not retreat. But normal units without leadership do not dissolve. So it's obvious - they keep on fighting while the rest of your armies runs away.
Units who dissolve will to just that - dissolve... .
Vine Men/Ogres are mindless, but neither magical nor undead. They tend to stand around if left without leader, but do not dissolve.

9) Commander. As with any other gem producing item. At least, they should. Haven't checked for ages.

10) Nope. Awe works in melee (range) only. As does fear.

They do.

5. I think this is the only question left.
No, they do not stack. Spells of the same type will, others will not.
E.g.: All ghost riders will stack together, and all Horrors will stack together, and all teleporting mages/troops will stack together, but there will be 3 separate battles. It is completely random which ones come first, too. (Sometimes your teleporters, sometimes the ghost riders.) It doesnt matter if the spell is cast or caused by item usage. (I had just tested this Last week with a Gate Stone and Boots of the Plane.)

A minor comment - Horrors and GRs stack together. And they're quite synergetic, too. :>

Monsters of the same allegiance will stack. Ghost Riders and Horrors, for instance, stack because they're all Special Monsters and not aligned with you.

Actually, I recall something like every 5 levels of cause fear increases the area of effect.

Ghost riders, Horrors and Phantasmal Attacks will stack, I did it yesterday. All annonymous spells will stack, and all non-annonymous spells will stack. I.e. if you send Angels, Calls of the Wind/Wild, Imprint Souls, and some teleporting mages, they will all attack together.

Funnily enough, when multiple players send annonymous spells at a province, the resulting hordes attack together, but only one player gets the battle replay.

As for the spells that target a commander, as opposed to a province, for example 'Visitation', 'Vengeance of the Dead', 'Earth Attack', etc... these do not stack in my experience. I do not know whether they even get targets assigned before the previous ones are resolved.

Every 5 levels of fear increases the difficulty of the morale roll by 1. The level of fear is the number of grid squares it affects.

Here's another newbie question while we're at it:

Do capital provinces ever have magic sites beyond the race specific ones? E.g., if I cast AR on Abysia after I've captured is there a chance of there being anything apart from the Smoulder Cone?

DeathDaemon January 14th, 2005 09:36 PM

Do not search a capital.

Capitals do not have magic sites in addition to those of the nation/theme. I believe the only troop available for other nations is the hydra hatching.

Taqwus January 14th, 2005 10:09 PM

Re: Do not search a capital.

Random events can cause certain non-hidden sites to appear, notably ore mines and, IIRC, some sort of money-granting alchemist's device, but I've not yet heard of a hidden site appearing. There won't be a hidden site there at the beginning of the game unless the map file specifically puts one there.

The Keep of Dark Forest Ulm allows the production of Ghoul Guardians to foreign posessors. I think somone mentioned more national captial sites which allow troop production to foreigners, but I thought these were all considered to be bugs...

Re: Do not search a capital.

That is a bug.

Chazar January 20th, 2005 02:21 PM

Re: Do not search a capital.

Since a few other fixed bugs resurfaced, I think i should also mention this:

A foreigner can still recruit ghoul guardians in V2.14, although the Version history says that this one had been corrected.

However, the game that I am referring to was started ith V2.12, so it might be fixed now.

DeathDaemon January 20th, 2005 06:32 PM

Re: Do not search a capital.

After reading your first response about GGs, I immediately made a test game and confirmed that another nation can recruit them after taking ulm.

Chazar January 20th, 2005 07:15 PM

Re: Do not search a capital.

Thanks for testing! So the bug is still there, although it should have been fixed for Version > 2.14 according to the Version history http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif
