OT: Civ3 Complete poll
Is Civ 3 Complete worth getting? Please only vote if you've bought it.

Re: OT: Civ3 Complete poll
Buyer beware I hated the game with a passion beyond comparesson.

Re: OT: Civ3 Complete poll
Do not buy. Stick with Civ 2.

Re: OT: Civ3 Complete poll
Opinions I have heard from people who played the expansions (like 'Play The World') tend to run in favor of the game. It got better as they continued developing after publishing. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif The lesson here seems to be not to buy the first release of games anymore than the first release of any other program. Commercial software companies have become so desperately rushed that they always push unfinshed products out the door. The 'Gold' edition or the 'final patch' is now what you want to wait for.

Well, we'll have the votes in one week. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Re: OT: Civ3 Complete poll
I much prefer CivII
|
Re: OT: Civ3 Complete poll
Civ2 was almost perfect. Civ3 less so. I didn't invest in the "updates", which to me should be free if you purchase the collector's edition.
|
Re: OT: Civ3 Complete poll
That is what Civ 3 was though, a huge scam to steal as much money as possible from the customer base... Yeah, we'll split the game into pieces and lie to them about adding features such as multiplayer in a patch after they are "fixed," but then instead we will sell it to them as a patch with "new and exciting features" for nearly the same amount of money that they paid for the original game.

Re: OT: Civ3 Complete poll
Don't get Civ 3, get Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri and it's expansion Sid Meier's Alien Crossfire, it's better then Civ3 hands down, especially if you want an update of Civ 2 without to many flaws new flaws. It's map editor is awesome, it's terrain is better, you can actualy design your own units(or have them built for you), and the game is just more fun to play, as it has an overall storyline, and you get to role play your faction.
You can get it in a discount pack(called the Lap Top Pack) with it's expansion for like $20, and it comes with Sim City 3000, a golf game and Red alert 2. If you do get Civ 3, don't pay more then $20 for it total, I payed $8 for base Civ 3 and $9 for conquests, I have spent 3 less than hours playing them. I bought SMAC and SMACX for $50 and $30 respectively and have logged hundreds of hours, second only to Pokemon, Stars! and SE2. |
Re: OT: Civ3 Complete poll
I think the tech needs some slowing down, but I agree that Alpha Centauri is a pretty good game. Didn't know about the 'Alien Crossfire' expansion. Exactly what does the expansion have in it?
I already have Simcity 3000 so I wonder if the 'pack' would be worth it. maybe I can find a SMAC/AC bundle somewhere... |

As for the Alien Crossfire game itself, it adds 7 new factions, 3-5 new tech levels, lots of new prodjects, new terrain landmarks, new units and new weapons/abilities and it comes with a Faction Editor. The new features almost change the way the game can be played, it makes Sea Bases incredibly more useful, and makes planet friendly strategies more viable. It's what an expansion should be, a damn near new game, not like 6 units and multiplayer. |
Re: OT: Civ3 Complete poll
Civ III complete? You mean Civ III with all it's add ons? Yes, I enjoyed it. But CIVIII alone, No.
|
Re: OT: Civ3 Complete poll
SimCity 3000 Unlimited isn't a expansion, its more like simcity 3000 with a bit more stuff. It has some cool things, such as you can choose the terrain and tree style, you got more landmarks, and you can make your own buildings.

Only if it doesn't sell.

Re: OT: Civ3 Complete poll
Huh. I totally forgot about this.
From the tally, if it turns up in a bargain bin I'm buying it. |
Re: OT: Civ3 Complete poll
The best civ game is CIV2: Test of Time edition, because they added lots of modding tools for it (like multiple maps in the same game, ways to restrict tech among the civs, ways to handle events, etc.)... itīs the modder dream for civ2, i myself love the possibilities of multiple map scenarios (you can have up to 4 maps)...

Re: OT: Civ3 Complete poll
This is a big reason why Civ 3 was such a huge dissappointment; they scrapped all of the good features from Civ 2, especially from the expansions... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif Most of what was added for Civ 3 only detracts from the game...

Re: OT: Civ3 Complete poll
FreeCiv would be good if the damned AI didn't make cities 2 squares away from each other...

Re: OT: Civ3 Complete poll
LOL Civ3 WAS a disappointment. But as a compulsive buyer like most of the rest of this country, I bought it, then I bought PTW, then I bought Conquests. I'm seriously pissed that I had to pay $120 total ($40 ea.) to finally get a complete game! After you get all the expansions, its decent.

Re: OT: Civ3 Complete poll
Civ 3 was a complete disaster. After such a rip-off (and thats exactly what it was) I promised myself to never buy a single game developed by Firaxis.
Now I dont really care if the final Gold edition of Civ 3 (or whatever that expansion pack is called) is decent or not. I am not going to buy it even for a dollar. Tweek |
Re: OT: Civ3 Complete poll
i never play civ3, but i'm actually playing civ call to power, i like it so far.... anyone play it? did you like it?

Re: OT: Civ3 Complete poll
Grab Alpha Centauri from a bargain bin. It's a very fine game by itself. Alien Crossfire has been deemed abandonware. Abandonware can be downloaded from some not-entirely-legal-but-hardly-prosecuted websites.
I played Alpha Centauri for countless hours by itself and I can say that the expansion didn't really add that much to the game. Granted, there's no point in not having it if you can get it, but it's not totally necessary. Just be sure to have the latest patch. The only bug I've found while playing is that the game will potentially crash if an enemy attacks a base and one of your airplanes can scramble to defend. This bug was fixed, though, leaving the game in perfect shape. |

Of course, the more I played CTP, the more I saw that Sid Meier the Hack just stole concepts from CTP rather than came up with anything new for Civ 3... |
Re: OT: Civ3 Complete poll
well.... i'll guess i'm not buying civ3, however i've alpha centauri hey mylon did you say crossfire was abandonware????, strange..., how many MB it's?

Re: OT: Civ3 Complete poll
I bought the original Civ3 (the 2001 edition, that is) and no other expansions/rereleases/whatever and I must say I preferred it over Civ2 (I bought the "ultimate civ2 classic collection" or whatever it was called in the US, the box with all scenarios and multiplayer support).
I think the only change over Civ2 I didn't like much was special units (such as hoplites, chariots, musketeers, etc.), but the new diplomacy system, culture ratings, resources etc. were nice. Also, I was glad they removed caravans and the other tricks for building a wonder in 1 turn! I missed the custom unit system of Alpha Centauri, but it only worked if you managed to keep some unit design slots empty (that is, if you actually did not use it!). I always filled up all the slots quite soon, and from then onwards unit design became a really boring routine of tracking down every single one-of-a-kind unit on the map and then retrofitting or disbanding it to be able to use its slot for another unit. As for multiplayer support, I never managed to complete a MP game with Civ2 and I soon lost interest in it. Simply tooooooo slow, it badly needed true simultaneous turns. This said, I was really disappointed by Civ2 and its scenario discs. It didn't improve much over Civ1 and the only scenarios I played more than once were "East wind, rain" and "World War: 1979". :\ |
Re: OT: Civ3 Complete poll
Was just forced to buy Civ3 (long story) I have been playing. It appears to be a bit flawed even their latest version. Conquest multiplayer and Conquest single player are not the same files or games. That cause some problems. What is weird is that there seems to be no technical reason that this turnd out to be so. makes it harder to mod a game and play it among friends. But I have spent about 40 hours playing it another 1040 hours of playing to get my investment back. (Just kidding) At this point I have to say CIVIII almost worked.

Re: OT: Civ3 Complete poll
Singleplayer conquests are different because they have more nations; multiplayer conquests only have six or seven nations in total (a game with six players is already very slow, so it would be awful with fifteen players).
I would say the game can be enjoyed, though it will not be my favourite game ever (then again, I have never been fond of Civilization games). Still, it did work better for me than Civ II, so I would probably recommand the game. |
Re: OT: Civ3 Complete poll
CTP2 had good stuff in it, I especially like all the wonders and the ability to advance into the future (Diamond Age!). The thing I think it has over Civ 3 is the old-fashioned way it does technology. The number of research points required to make an upgrade is the same for each advance, for all players. It's simple, it's how it's always been done, and it lets me be that technology race that beats everyone out of the wonders. The way Civ3 does it is incredibly annoying. The more people that have a technology, the easier it is to research. While this is arguably more realistic, it pisses me off http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif - I'm the guy that always plays a variation of Psilon in moo2, i always max out research racial benefits, I LOVE playing the technology race, but you can't do that in civ3. Unless you whore your technology out to the highest bidder, you fall behind. I really don't like civ3's technology system.
The main reason CTP2 didn't quite catch on was the fact that it was rushed for release. There's a long story about Civ: CtP and Civilization games, how they split, who had the trademark, and I think the battle was coming to an end in Sid Meier's favor, so the game was released prematurely. Result: CtP2 has a HORRIBLE AI. Some other things are bugged. Civ3's AI is much better. However, CtP2's source code was released like half a year ago, and since some of the mods are already amazing, and make the AI quite challenging, I see nothing but good things in the future for CtP2!! Check www.apolyton.net for more information on CtP2, moo, Civ, RoN, GalCiv, etc. ~ Tim ~ |
