Questions, questions...
Well after playing so many strategy games an 4x strategy games over the years(and even running a fan site for one), the Demo of the Gold has captured my attention...theres just so much to it. I'm going to have to kick my friend who recommended as even the demo is becoming a time sink. Likely going to buy it in the next week or so now that its off backorder.
1) Going over various forum posts, etc it seems the AI isn't that great at least in the original anyways. Has this changed in the Gold Ed? (Hard to tell in the demo) 2) I know there is a list of many recommended links/mods/etc , but what do people consider absolutely neccessary to get the most enjoyment out of the game? I will likely have more questions once I get the full game, but for now those should suffice. Thanks in advance! |

So, download http://imagemod.spaceempires.net/ |
Re: Questions, questions...
Thanks, already had the link to that page, but will at least get the one you mentioned. One other question though.
3) Is there still that many people playing PBEM or TCP/IP? Just curious if I don't like how the AI is. |
Re: Questions, questions...
http://www.pbw.cc for all your gaming needs. Still quite active. Even newbies games starting up still.
The AI in the TDM Modpack is much stronger than in stock and still gives many veterans a run for their money, with the right game settings. I don't play solo anymore, so I don't recall those settings off-hand. Many people enjoy my Quadrant Mod, as it gives much more intereting maps to play on: http://fqm.spaceempires.net/ |
Re: Questions, questions...
Thanks Nightwolf and Imperator Fyron. I think that answers my questions, although I would gladly take some more MOD recommendations.

Re: Questions, questions...
If you have not yet done so, I recommend you take some time and read the New Members Please Look Here thread. (It is a sticky thread at the top of the forum.)
In this thread are link to other threads, downloads, and important info. Also it provides solid recommendations for new players. ================================================ NEW PLAYERS SHOULD ================================================ 1. Update their copy of SEIV Gold to the latest Version 1.91 2. Download and install the Image Mod Packs 3. Read the FAQ 4. Consider downloading and reading the Getting Started Guide (Beta) 5. Post in the forum if you have any questions or concerns. |
Re: Questions, questions...
Design Names Anthology, while not a mod, is still quite useful. It adds several hundred new design name files to choose from. http://dna.spaceempires.net/
Pirates and Nomads is definitely worth a play, even if Suicide Junkie never updated it to take advantage of the new 1.91 features. P&N, along with Devnull Mod and TDM, are 3 of the first of the great mods. http://www.geocities.com/hohoho611ca/pirates.html Devnull (lacks a website, so you get this) http://home.t-online.de/home/320045362204-0001/ If you want an incredibly different game, try Adamant. And I do mean different. http://adamant.spaceempires.net/ There are a lot of mods available for download from SpaceEmpires.net, so browse through there at some point. SpaceEmpires.net Downloads If you want a few hundred extra shipsets to choose from (never play the same race twice!), you can get the Shipset Archive from: http://kazharii.no-ip.com:6969 Note that this requires using Bit Torrent, which you can find information on in the stickied "SE4 File Downloads Tracker" thread at the top of this forum. |

Re: Questions, questions...
To Imperator Fyron
Thanks a bunch, just what I was looking for. Also will give a good browse through spaceempires.net probably though after I play a few times through. Hence the reason I wan't a few recommendations of ones that are highly recommended. I'm use to Combat Mission games I guess where there are a number of mods that are almost considered required, in that they improve the graphics, textures, etc. Wow, just browsing the site for Adamant, I'm going to have to try that...but I think I better do a number of games through the first time before I apply any mods that are almost total conversions in a way. Thanks for all the recommendations! To Atrocities: Thanks, Atrocities, I read through all that already, but didn't download that guide. I got it and must say, a great thing to browse through, picked up a bunch of things I didn't know. Thanks! Definitely into Star Trek as I ran a site for botf way back in the day, so definitely going to to check it out although its going to have to wait abit...22 megs takes a bit for dial-up. Thanks for the heads up! |
Re: Questions, questions...
Bit Torrent is a good way to download the files on dialup. It downloads them as small pieces to begin with, so no possibility of having to start over if your download craps out and there is no need to download the entire file at once. It also has a lot of built-in error checking and will redo any pieces that did not transfer correctly, so no need to download the entire file again in that case either. Much, much better than any of those "download accelerators" out there, when available.
Adamant, Image Mod, FQM, and Star Trek Mod are all rather large mods, and are all available on that BT tracker I mentioned before. |
Re: Questions, questions...
Ohh, okies. Will definitely make use of that then, didn't know a number of the mods were up on it. Thanks again!

Re: Questions, questions...
I also have the mod broken into manageable download sizes.
File 1 of 4 File 2 of 4 File 3 of 4 File 4 of 4 Win R File Archiver Is the one that I use and is, IMHO, one of the best. |
Re: Questions, questions...
One of these days, you two are going to scare a newbie to death.
Hi. |
Re: Questions, questions...
Atrocites, Fyron! Do you have no Conscience??!!
We all know how addictive SEIV is anyway, And you give him all this at once? We’ll never see this guy for months, Years even. I've heard of Kindness can Kill but... Quote:

Re: Questions, questions...
Welcome DC!
If you are going to be using the FDQ to get familiar with the game then please be sure to check back with us after your first is completely done -- @ July or so I'd say hahaha. I'm playing a practice solo game getting familiar with the end game technologies and how to use them....I'm @ 110 turns into the game on an FDQ map, Mid-Life Dense, and still have 1/4 of the map to explore, (I don't just cozy up to any Alliance for resupply you know~~~). Playing semi-focused, watching TV during a turn sporadically, and micro-managing my moves and economy costs me 1-2 hours per turn at this point. I recommend that you just throw yourself into a PBW game, while learing with a faster paced solo game along the way. Your solo game will allow you to anticipate a bit in the PBW game, and get you familiar with some of the differences right away. (Like communications and ship building/movement -- all will seem delayed to you at first in PBW compared to Solo). Oh...and just take it for granted that your first couple of games in PBW will find you in the position of simply colonizing planets for the Veterans hehehe.... |
Re: Questions, questions...
Well I cannot speak for Fyron, but if I have scared him off, I sincerely do apologies as my fondness for SEIV sometimes compels me to be brutally honest about my preceived addition.

Re: Questions, questions...
I respectfully add to Gandalph's warning that:
"You should not engage in SEIV if self-employed, or in any other circumstance where productivity is linked directly to financial gain." http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...s/rolleyes.gif Turin |
Re: Questions, questions...
It is always fun to see someone new enjoying this great game. Welcome.

Re: Questions, questions...
To Atrocities:
Thanks will likely get them tonight, much easier to get in bits! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif To Everyone: Just wanted to thank everyone for the comments and information. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif I will try to pop my head out in a few months one I've gone through all this stuff. *grins* I have a basic familiarity after playing the demo, but I'm sure its a bit different in the full game...so I am sure I have quite a bit to learn still. Once again, thanks everyone for your comments! And no, I haven't been scared off yet... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif Thanks. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif |
