Re: what atmo?
I've found that None atmospheres for the moons aren't worth it. I believe someone had found that due to a minor bug, there are slightly more Methane worlds than others in unmodded games. Personally, I just go for Oxygen. I haven't noticed a significant differance in the type of atmosphere I pick.
What does matter more is what atmospheres OTHER players pick. If I end up the only Oxygen breather in the game, that's a big advantange. |
Re: what atmo?
There are the same number of methane worlds as hydrogen, oxygen, and carbon dioxide. The bug is that there is one more methane rock world than methane ice world (or was it the other way around?). There are the same number of methane worlds, they are just not balanced between rock and ice as all other atmospheres are. This is so inconsequential that it really doesn't provide any meaningful benefit though...
Other than none, the atmospheres are balanced. None has fewer facility slots overall, due to the lack of gas giants and tendency towards tiny planets (moons). |

Arise, ye olde dead horsie. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif
This has been debated at length several times. I'd say there are several schools of thought. There are the rock-none-ers and ice-none-ers who are into the moons; less big-none planets, but more moons are "breathable". There are the rock-oxygen-ers who just like to have the same role playing planet type as humans. There are the gas-anything-ers (no gas-none available) who are into having fewer large colonies over many smaller ones. There are the scheming anything-anything-ers who always try to have a unique colony tech and breathing empire for maximum multiplayer trading leverage. Take your pick or make up your own. Someone, possibly SJ, made a map analyzer to check for statistical balance in colony and atmosphere types. I'm sure a forum search will find it. I've also heard that the default game as a slight advantage and a slight disadvantage colony/atmosphere combo, but I can't remember which ones are better/worse right now. The numbers are close enough, however, to make your choice pretty much equal no matter what you pick. |
Re: what atmo?
There is more O2 breather, so try to avoid it.
Oh, and if you use Fyron's Quadrant mod, forget the "none" atm for two reason : _you can start on irradiated planet - and for you irradiated are even more valueless _moon can have any atmosphére so the advantage is not so big |

Re: what atmo?
Despite the fact that everyone chooses Rock/Oxy, everyone takes it anyway. The leveraging for a special position is just not real important to people, I guess. Here's a recent poll of mine - {clicky}
And it was Andres Lescano made a post years ago, which I tried to summarize here at the Encyclopedia Malfadorica [Edited due to serious Javascript HTML wierdness on the board today] |
Re: what atmo?
Anyone know where I could find that graphical wheel representing colony/atmosphere percentages? The link above contains a broken link, which I am almost positive used to be to that pic made by Andres Lescano.

Re: what atmo?
I always choose methan gas giant or carbon dioxide gas giant.

Re: what atmo?
Idem

Re: what atmo?
My race is hydrogen breathing, and is on rock. Living on ice planets doesn't make sense for dinosaur-like races...

Re: what atmo?
I usually pick Methane/Ice - I don't know why; maybe something about frozen flatulence is humerous? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/smirk.gif

Lets hope that planet doesn't warm up anytime soon.

Re: what atmo?
I think this is one of those things where it doesn't matter that much except if you are really competitive. I prefer Rock/None myself. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif
If you're playing against the AI, really, anything goes. |
Re: what atmo?
I ussually go with Oxygen/Rock or Hydrogen/Rock, depending on what shipset I use. In teh end though, it doesn't really make a difference as atmospheric converter come into play mid-game. At that point I convert everything, including moons. Why moons? Well they have five facility slots once you convert them which means five monolith facilities or the likewise.
|
Re: what atmo?
I already get Irradiated homeworld though. And more generally with a 5-planet start and gas giant I have most of the time an Huge planet well suited to do colonizer without rushing.

Re: what atmo?
Converters take two YEARS at the very least, two years in which you will get NO production from those moons - though that's not a reason for me not to use them - so in large-scale warfare with smaller Empires your moons will have no production for at least two years, which could be bad. On the other hand, you could just do it one moon at a time, which is slower but less economically crippling.
Or you could just mod in a few extra facilities for Organic Manipulation races (like Algae Basins or Chlorophyl Plants (as in manufacturing plants, not the United Floral Empire)) that convert atmosperes more quickly... |
Re: what atmo?
Or temporaly accelerated atm converter...
One more item for my "Omni powerful temporal mod". |
