Long Range scanners.

I have long range scanners on some of my ships. It says something about scanning one sector away. How do they work? I don't see anything with them. What are they supposed to see? Is there a button I am missing?

If another ship is 1 sector away from you, and doesn't have scanner jammers, you can see all of the components on their ship http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...es/biggrin.gif

Re: Long Range scanners.

You can also see their supply levels, among other things: in fact, ships you can scan give you access to all the basic information you get from your own ships. Planets cannot be scanned, however.

A sector is the solar system right?

Re: Long Range scanners.

No, one square in the system.

This is kinda confusing because "sector" can mean both
-the part of the galaxy where the game is played, i.e. the map of all systems.
-one square in a system.

Re: Long Range scanners.

A sector is a small part of a solar system: it corresponds to the space taken by a planet, a sun, the speed of your vessels, and so on. So, to scan a vessel one sector away, your ships must be right next to the target for the scanning to work.

Or research higher levels http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif then You can spy on them from a distance, 5 sectors away at most i think.

Re: Long Range scanners.

I believe there's facility scanners that have system-wide scanners.

Re: Long Range scanners.

I havn't got the sytem wide ones yet. I am concentrating on weapons and shields to defeat the piundian (Grey cyrstal monsters).

gaining ground, but so slowly. If they other 11 players (All AI) attack I will die. Only 5 of them hate me.

Re: Long Range scanners.

Don't take over half the galaxy, or get too far ahead of the second place person. Then all the AI will hate you till the end of time. They all band together to destroy you.

I believe those are a psychic racial tech. Sorry, that doesn't mean they ignore scanner jammers and scattering armor.

Wait do long range scanners work with cloaks? when they are engaged? and can you spy on a cloak ship if you detect them

Re: Long Range scanners.

If you can see the ship, (and are in range) then the LRS will work on them.

Unless they have Scattering Armor or a Scanner Jammer.

Re: Long Range scanners.

When you do scan a ship, remember to take notes on what you see. The scanned design will NOT automatically appear in the Enemy Ships list; you have to actually engage in combat for that.

Re: Long Range scanners.

Wasn't that fixed in 1.91?

Slick March 9th, 2005 10:31 PM

Re: Long Range scanners.

You know, I believe that there was a blurb in the 1.91 history.txt that said it was, but I never tested it.

Re: Long Range scanners.

I am fairly certain that Canpq's post is still accurate in 1.91...

Re: Long Range scanners.

Here it is. Not sure if it actually works:

Version 1.87:
...
2. Fixed - In Simultaneous games, scanned enemy ship designs would not be saved.

Fyron March 10th, 2005 01:44 AM

Re: Long Range scanners.

Hmm... apparently it does work now. Maybe it was intel projects that are still not saving the design.
