Resource Converter

The newbie FAQ states that one resource converter can service the whole empire (4.4.12)

But the datafile - Facility states that only 1 facility per system is effective. Does this mean that you need one in every system or that you can build more than one in different systems, so that you got some spare ones?

Re: Resource Converter

You can build spares in other systems, often a good idea if you fear being attacked.

THere is an absolute limit on how many resources that each converter can do, but I am not sure of the number.

Ok thx... I was just a little unsure about how it worked.

Now I just need to figure out what the limit is.

Re: Resource Converter

The limit is just above 1,000,000 resources per converter. You can have more than one converter per system.

Are you sure that I can have more than one converter per system?

Test it out, and see. That may have been a bug, the one per system thingie.

Yes, definitely. In the "Return to Hell 2" PBW game I have one system with four resource converters and another with two. Using all of them, I can convert 6,000,000 resources per turn.

Re: Resource Converter

I've never built one of these, I usually am either a.) in a solo game and dominating the galaxy by the time this comes along or b.) in a multi game and am losing horribly by this time.

About the 1 per system effective comment; I think it may have meant 1 per EMPIRE effective.

But then, who would expect that you'd ever NEED to convert more than a million resources per turn http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif

yea each conversion takes time... so it converts up to a max per turn movement point... if that makes sence... check the logs... it tells you how much it does over and over until complete... also if you que up more than that can be handled per a turn it carries the orders over to the next game turn...

Also, if you are playing a single-player game - keep in mind that the AI does not know how to use the resource converter. This is one of a handful of techs that are more or less cheats for a human player in single-player mode because even if it is modded into the AIs planetary build queue, there is no code that tells them to use it - similar to code that would also tell them to trade for resources if they are low, etc.

Yeah I've noticed this in a few games I've played that it will only convert so many resources per day of the turn...so it could do this 30 times for one turn, and I guess from what Tesco is saying it could do even more if it carries over to the next turn...So if it is 1M per converter...that would mean a limite of 1m/30days=33k per day...does this sound right...and has anyone any proof? Also if you set a RC on repeat orders it will also try an convert resources all 30 days of the turn until it runs out of the specific resource...I found this out the hard way...a couple of times... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif

Re: Resource Converter

It isn't 33k/day. However it is something similar. I noticed that the log entries (simul game) show discrete amounts being converted. Going by memory here, I believe that a RC III will convert in 50k -> 35k batches several times throughout the turn (that's the 70% conversion rate).

Yes, it maxxes out somewhere around 1M/turn due to running out of time during the turn. Yes, this is possible in large games even if you aren't a total economic idiot. I've been in games where I captured several planets from an organic player and had a massive surplus of organics - perfect for converting. I've also been in games where some of my big resource producing planets and/or spaceports were glassed/captured - this can bring your construction efforts to a halt in 1 turn. A Resource Converter is a must for any empire. As mentioned before having a backup is a great idea since they can't be built in one turn normally. Also if you end up converting > 1M/turn, they both can work together.

edit: A RC on "repeat orders" won't try to convert multiple times per turn; just once per turn. *BUT* the order will stay in the queue and it will try to convert *EVERY* turn. If you give another conversion order to the RC, this will be added to the order queue and it will attempt to do *BOTH* every turn. I once made this mistake also while converting org to min, didn't notice what was happening, but noticed that my orgs were going down and now I had a surplus of mins. You guessed it. I converted min to orgs. That means that each turn I was converting org to min back to org again, each time losing 30% until I figured it out. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif
