Single Player Mods
Are there *any* mods that are any good for single player SEIV? My net access sucks, so that'd be... very nice.
(.zip files are preferable for my D/L...) |
Re: Single Player Mods
Well, I reccomend the Star Trek Mod made by Atrocities, just because it's so damnd good, and the AI isnt too bad at it. Wont be nice for your dialup tho.

Re: Single Player Mods
If you like tactical combat and fine control over just a few ships, try:
Pirates & Nomads http://imagemodserver.mine.nu/other/...dsModV3.1c.zip Play as a Pirate or Nomad instead of a Normal race, and manage a tiny force as you try to hide and survive in a universe of giants. If the stock game is too easy, try this. Any trick in the book is fair game here. It does require the imagemod, (combat, facility, and components) which is also available in handy RAR format for extra compression. Getting winRAR will save you tons of downloading time in the future. PS: If you need it, I can break the imagemod up into floppy-sized pieces for you. It would then be easy to download from a neighbour or library and then carry home. PPS: The imagemod is an expansion of the stock images, and is used everywhere. Most mods use the graphics in it, and this way, you only have to download them once with occasional update patches. Much easier than downloading another copy of it with each mod. |
Re: Single Player Mods
TDM Mod is an AI only mod that is great for single player.
FQM does not change the game play, but just changes how systems are built. both of these are great for single player, and can work together. You can play single player Porportions Mod, but the AI is not the best and needs to have a high bonus to be any challenge at all. |
Re: Single Player Mods
For any one on dial up there is always the option for bit torrent or if they want, I can upload the full mod in parts so that they can download them over time. (I think 1.9.0.0 is already listed in four parts in the Archieve section. Download that then update to 1.9.0.9 or 1.9.1.2.) (Both versions are being played on PBW)

Re: Single Player Mods
My <$.02>
The TDM is the best single player Mod if you're looking for a challenging AI. (Excuse me, a MORE challenging AI not that any of 'em can give an experienced player much run-for-the-money without bonuses.) That's about the only one I play single anymore with the FQM for the cool stuff it has. </$.02> |
Re: Single Player Mods
TDM is a great SP mod yes. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Re: Single Player Mods
I'd also suggest the Devnul mod for the slight but usefull (and fun) changes it makes from the stock game.

Re: Single Player Mods
"internet access sucks"
Definition: Only available through library / school, both of which have high speed internet, but very poor D/L support. At school I can only manage .zip files, or other files that I can open -- no "save as" or "save to desktop". At library, I have difficulty with using my thumbdrive, though they let me. Though thank goodness I already have the imagemod -- trying to get that over a thumbdrive would be... a nightmare. And seeing as how I"ve started making a habit of playing at hard-high bonuses, something must be weird about my game setup, 'cause none of the AIs give me much challenge -- I've tried AST, and the AI is not that great untill and unless it has you boxed in through pure luck (two empires starting next to my system, through my only two exits, each of which has gobs and gobs of systems to expand into and are extra hostile... youch). OK, so I'll find the TDM mod. The others I can find, just have to re D/L (I hate crashes...) edit: BTW -- if I have the image mod, should I need any other graphics files to play AST? because I keep getting problems from some of the graphics, as if the Imagemod components pack I got a hold of was incomplete or something... |
Re: Single Player Mods
One of the imagemod files, the components iirc, was broken on the main site, but the mirrors are okay.

Re: Single Player Mods
You might want to take down the Geocities site... Turn it into a link to the new main site, perhaps.

Re: Single Player Mods
The AIC mod may interest you; it can be downloaded from here. The mod takes a rather different approach than TDM: where TDM focuses on better scripts for the AI, AIC gives direct assets to the AI to compensate for the things the AI does not use well (remote mining for example).
AIC is also based on the Proportions mod, so you should expect a slower pace, and fewer planets/ships to manage. Population plays a more important part, but you have the option of skipping the "moving population around" part if you want. |
Re: Single Player Mods
FYI, My Miners Guild Mod is built on the Devnull Mod v1.70. Basically I made planets have less resources and boost the resources and frequency of asteroids. With the added Miner class ships setting up mining bases/production centers is very important. As an added bonus (for whimps like me) the AI players don't use the asteroids so, their resources are restricted to planets and like I said they are reduced. So this in effect gives the 'Human' player a singificant advantage (I still don't win, I'm the father of all whimps).
Some players like to use my mod in a more challenging way,.. not use asteroid mining, this puts you back on par with the AI, but you have limited resources. There are many interesting elements in the Devnull Mod, and the FQM (also included in the base Devnull Mod) So I highly reccomend my Miners guild mod, But then again I'm Biased. I think the link in my sig still works, try it and see. Feedback is welcome. Cheers! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif |
Re: Single Player Mods
My Dark Nova 4 mod also has working AI's. They've been taken from TDM AI's. Dark Nova makes relatively few changes to the basic SE4 game but adds some things that increase the options you have when building ships and units through mounts and extra sizes mainly. Plus some other stuff. It can be d/l from spaceempires.net or from PBW.

Re: Single Player Mods
By the way, the AST mod is no longer supported by Atrocities ( I think...) The current star trek mod is...well... the Star Trek Mod, and it has an AI much improved over the AST mod AI. The link to STM should be in Atrocities sig somewhere.
In my opinion, STM is much better than AST. |

Re: Single Player Mods
Another nice blend of mods is the TDM + FQM + deathstalkers mount mod. All these together retain playable AI's who use the mounts correctly from DMM with lots of good eye-candy from the FQM.

Re: Single Player Mods
Is there an archive version of TDM? I'm running SE4 on linux with wine and the installer version of TDM I got from the bittorrent tracker doesn't work with wine.
|
Re: Single Player Mods
Try just opening the file with winRAR.
Skip the self-extracting part and decompress it manually. |
Re: Single Player Mods
TDM is distributed with some installer package, not as a self extracting rar file. SpaceEmpires.net hosts a rar copy of the mod, however:

Re: Single Player Mods
This thread makes me think about new single player setups for myself. I would like to be a pirate/nomad race but the setup should be together with another mod. I know that TDM works all right together with pirates, but what about STM or devnull without monsters?
|
Re: Single Player Mods
TDM only works because it is not a mod, but rather a set of kickass AIs.
FQM could be spliced in I suppose, since P&N dosen't do much with the planets/systems/quadrants. But nothing that changes components, facilities, shipsizes etc would be compatible. Not without making a whole new mod from scratch. And sometimes not even then; some feature sets are mutually exclusive. |
Re: Single Player Mods
TDM still needs poking at for use in non stock or the AI won't use any new weapons, unless the mod keeps the same weapon families.
I really hope that's right or I've been wasting loads of time mucking around with AI files and still don't understand them. *fingers crossed* |
Re: Single Player Mods
SJ wrote an AI patcher program that converts stock-compatible AIs (such as TDM AIs) to work in P&N.
