OT: What does \'Lyproscopic\' mean?

It's a real word. Apparently, it's a very obscure word.

It came up in my brother's homework and now we're curious.

Thanks.

Re: OT: What does \'Lyproscopic\' mean?

Looks to me like a case of a typo or an "invention" in a somewhat reliable source being spread around. All searches for it bring up the exact same information, on Lithium in a periodic table, with a description that states the salt lithium chloride is one of the most lyproscopic materials known.

If the homework came from a textbook, you might be able to make a pretty big stink with the publisher about plagarism. If the teacher made up the homework, your brother could put the teacher on the spot for not being very dilligent with information sources.

If it is a scientific term, there would exist more than one sentence using it, and a definition somewhere. So, I would say that it's a word so obscure, that it technically doesn't exist http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Re: OT: What does \'Lyproscopic\' mean?

If the creator of this word actually used Greek, it would mean something like "someone/something slim/skinny" (from the adjective lupros (a,on), slim, "causing grievances" => not sure what that one means).

I am not sure if that would be the meaning of the word though, since I know literally nothing about Lithium, elements and the like.

Re: OT: What does \'Lyproscopic\' mean?

Strategia, don't know about the first one, but the other two are mispellings of Laparoscopic, which is basically a form of surgery in which a small endoscope is insterted into the abdominal cavity through a small incision. Sound like a text book, don't I? My mom had one a few years back and I remember subjecting the doctors to a serious grilling as to exactly what they intended to do.

And that connection with LiCl/LiBr would be better served with hygroscopic, so maybe that's a typo too...

Laparoscopy - examination or treatment of the interior of the abdomen by means of a laparoscope.

The above is a medical dictionary definition. Nowadays this procedure can be used to remove the appendix, gallbladder or uterus through only three small (2 cm) holes in the abdomen instead of having to make a larger incision. This reduces recovery time and scarring.

I've never met anybody who can wiggle his ears! I must have no muscles near my ears, I can't even try to move them; there's simply nothing there. It's impossible, just like trying to see the back of my head or trying to touch my right elbow with my right hand; can't be done. I was born with bad ear-wiggling genes. Re: OT: What does \'Lyproscopic\' mean?

I've found a good way is to either move or constrain those particular muscles with a finger. Obviously, this doesn't work with eyeballs, but holding one eyebrow down while I raised my eyebrows is how I learned how to raise only one at a time. And I'm pretty sure that I learned to wiggle my ears by wiggling them with my fingers.

I didn't complain about the big eyes, I whined about the fact that he/it looks so bloody surprised and has a rather..... well, rather dim-witted look about him. Not quite what I'd expect with a Were-Narf.

Hmm, now if David would perhaps add two large bushy eyebrows in a "V" shape over the Were-Narf's eyes, making him look really p*ssed, that would be an improvement..... Pretty easy actually. First, just try to move your ears. They won't do anything, but if you just tell your body "hey, those things should be doing something" even just for a few seconds every day, within a few days to a week you'll notice a bit of motion when you try. I think your body says "hey, lets get those muscles working! We obviously need them if buddy who owns the body wants them to move!" Just the conscious attempt to move them seems to make the body want to be able to move them.
