OT: Even More Proof

I love posting these things. I just once, just once, would love to see one of these phaleasing (sp) SOB's strung up and hung from the tallest tree with a sign around their stretched neck that reads "If We Catch You, This Will Be You!"

Dear eBay User,

During our regularly scheduled account maintenance and verification
procedures, we have detected a slight error in your billing
information.

This might be due to either of the following reasons:

1. A recent change in your personal information ( i.e. change of address).
2. Submitting invalid information during the initial sign up process.
3. An inability to accurately verify your selected option of payment
due to an internal error within our processors.

Please update and verify your information by clicking the link below:

//arribada.ebay.com/saw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?PlaceCCInfo]http://arribada.ebay.com/saw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?PlaceCCInfo
Look at this link - not even a web site, more than likely a program... note the ISAPI.dll thing.

If your account information is not updated within 72 hours then your
ability to sell or bid on eBay will become restricted.

Thank you

The eBay Billing Department .

NOTE for the unaware: THIS IS A SCAM EMAIL. Note the redirect and authors email...... they do not lead to Ebay, they lead elsewhere. And that fact that this was sent to my gmail account which has NOTHING to do with my ebay account. LOL.

I get about one of those a day. It's kinda funny to read those, especially when you have no clue what bank or whatever it says you have an account in. One day, I actually forwarded one of these e-mails to the bank that the sender was portraying, I wonder what ever happened to him...

Re: OT: Even More Proof

One of the best I recently got had a load of links about 'security' in it. Just because I wondered how good a scam it was I gave them a click, they linked to the actual bank which first of said "We will never ask you for account numbers, etc in an email"

Made me laugh http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Can't they trace back your trail even if you enter false info?

They can get your IP, but not any account information.

Re: OT: Even More Proof

This is classic.

I recently got a very similar one which I thought was pretty slick.

It looked like it came from my ISP.

The text read something like

Our Virus filters have detected a large number of viruses coming from your account.

Please download the <link> virus checker availiable for free from Earthlink.

I still wonder how many unsuspecting fools they caught with that one.

---
The other one I really liked was the one that purported to be from the FBI. It said I was being investigated and that I should open the attached file for information on why.

In the attachment window of my mail reader it looked like the name was "Indictment.txt".

Curious as to what was being attempted, I looked deeper. The name was "Indictment.txt" followed by about 100 instances of a blank character (not space) and then a .exe

I do have to wonder how many people are still being fooled by these.

LOTS. My job is IT support for an entire real estate board (approx 600 realtors). I don't think a day goes by where someone has messed up their computer with some sort of scam that they fell for. Luckly, I only have to do direct support for about 100 realtors. The rest are too far for me to travel to.

Here's a fun site for looking up such links: Kloth.Net; a WhoIs on 218.12.184.39 told me that the IP is owned by Asia Pacific Network Information Centre. Running it on arribada.ebay.com said "not found"

Interesting, no?

Unfortunately sometimes just going to their website can install trojans and malware/spyware - then they can ge t anything on your PC. Kinda' like playing chicken on the highway.

You're playing with fire on that one IMO.
