GeForce Or Radeon
Which is the best video Card and why?
|
Re: GeForce Or Radeon
Based on my totally subjective experience of good experiences with Nvidia, I voted Nvidia.
|
Re: GeForce Or Radeon
There is no "best." The card that gets the highest results in bench marks fluctuates every month. Even concurrent bench marks performed by the same group (using different games/programs) show different products as being the "best." Either way you go, you will probably be fine.
As long as you don't plan on using Linux any time soon, that is. The current ATI drivers for Linux are quite terrible. |
Re: GeForce Or Radeon
Hi Atrocities
With my finally new cpu in March i got ati x600pro, engine clock 400mhz, memory 256. My experience with store sells man & few web sites is?.(1) a tie but store man went for geforce .(2) How much you willing to pay for ?.As long you get a good model and very pricey at that.Say for nvidia, geforce go 6800 or 6800 ultra.Or ati radeon x300 to x850. NOTE:I do find geforce more expensive then ati cards when compareing. NOTE:You wana look at example; (a) engine clock speed,(b)Memory clock speed,(c)Memory amount,(d)Pixel fillrate,(e)pipline. Rule of thumb; The higher the number the faster it is. Note: i didnt want to go for faster card because, some news report of faster mhz cards on both geforce/ati type cards being unstable at times, your computer will use cooling fan allot more, or graphic card fan will create a noise which can distract your game. Anyway was i helpful?. |
Re: GeForce Or Radeon
I once spent $450.00 for a GeForce 3 and we all know now that that was a bad deal.
I don't want to get burned again, and I do like the Nvidia cards but I have also been hearing, and reading, some great things about the ATI Radeon cards. I noticed that the ATI cards have 256 megs of memory while the Nvidia cards have only 128. Does this make a differance? |
Re: GeForce Or Radeon
Sales people are generally a very poor source of information. All that most of them know is market speak. Be very wary of relying on them.
|
Re: GeForce Or Radeon
Rule 87 - Never trust sales people. They seldom know what they are talking about, and all they care about is making the sale.

ATI cards are usually cheaper for the exact same overall performance. Check out some benchmarks on sites such as anandtech.com. You will see that there is practically no difference between the best ATI cards and best Nvidia cards. |
Re: GeForce Or Radeon
$500.00 for the GeForce FX 6800 Ultra Video Card OMFG No way!
|
Re: GeForce Or Radeon
Well I just bought a Geforce 6600 256MB for my new computer and it works great. There is one for sale on newegg.com for $135 US

Re: GeForce Or Radeon
I like the ATI Radeon All-in-Wonder line of cards. That way I can use my computer as a TV, and still be able to handle any current game on medium to high settings.
Also, I never buy the top of the line graphics card, since the next step down is plenty powerful at half the price. |
Re: GeForce Or Radeon
Newegg doesn't deliver to Canada. Anyone know of one that does?
|
Re: GeForce Or Radeon
I've never had a NVidia card, always gone ATI and never had any complaints.
|
Re: GeForce Or Radeon
I'd say that the drivers are more important than the actual card. Sometimes I cannot believe the difference they make, of course other times they make bugger all difference. But the point is still valid(ish)
To the question, NVidias always worked well for me and all else being equal I'd get them again. Even all else being slightly less than equal in fact. |
Re: GeForce Or Radeon
I voted for Nvidia, but only because they are a little quicker in updating their drivers than ATI, not because either piece of hardware is better than the other. And both cheat on the benchmarks, so that's a wash.
|
Re: GeForce Or Radeon
I'd say ATI just to support the underdog, really... You will get the same performance either way (assuming comparable models).
|
Re: GeForce Or Radeon
The ATI cards are good hardware-wise. And the multi-function models like the All-in-Wonder are quite cool. But everyone, and I mean everyone, that I have ever asked for advice on the ATI vs. nVidia question says that ATI drivers are legendary for suckiness. There are more problems in one iteration of ATI's drivers than the entire series of nVidia's 'detonator' drivers from the beginning. If you are a serious hardware geek willing to constantly putz with your system to get the thing to work properly, ATI might be a reasonable option. If you want it to 'just work' then nVidia is much better.
And btw, if you're not focused on 3D performance there are still some other players in the market. Matrox still makes very good video cards, including good 3D hardware acceleration. It's just not as fast as the ATI/nVidia chipsets. Who needs the very fastest 3D 'framerate'? People who play the most demanding FPS and RTS games. Everyone else will probably find it worthwhile to check out Matrox as well as ATI/nVidia. |
Re: GeForce Or Radeon
Atrocities is definitely focused on 3d performance. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

Re: GeForce Or Radeon
What's your budget? For under $100 US, you can get a FX 5700 LE with 128 mb of memory. What's important to look at is also what version of DirectX and OpenGL are supported, which pixel and vertex shaders version arre supported, etc.

Re: GeForce Or Radeon
I hate ATI cards. They came stock in the computers we bought a couple years ago at work and none of our programs seemed to worked. We downloaded the latest drivers and everything. We bought nVidia cards and replaced them and haven't had any problems since then. nVidia in my opinion is the way to go.

Re: GeForce Or Radeon
Any hardware that comes with those pre-built machines is suspect.
For all we know if could have been dropped on the floor and stepped on during assembly. Maybe they just throw in the marginal parts that are more likely to be returned if purchased separately by knowledgable tecchies. Putting your own together from scratch is good. |
Re: GeForce Or Radeon
If you have the knowledge required to do so.
|
Re: GeForce Or Radeon
Nvidia's second generation cards seemed more economical then ATIs, soI went for Nvidia 5500 at about 70 bucks. No problems driver wise.

Well by popular vote, Nvidia wins thus far. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif
Now I just need to build the ultimate PC, Any one have $5,000 dollars laying around that I can have? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif |
Re: GeForce Or Radeon
I have one of those shiny gold dollar coins with sacagewea(spelling?) on it....

Re: GeForce Or Radeon
Depends on what you are doing. Some games are better on one brand or the other. Almost any card is better than onboard. and memory is like money, more is better. AGP 4/8 is at the end of life, PCI is the future, and should be considered for future upgrades.
You can get a Radon 9800/256 for about $180 and it will work quite well. I was able to Put up some real good marks with the one in this system. But then I had to pay through the nose for it 18 months ago. Benchmark |
