A question to SEV beta testers

I know you can't violate the NDA, but I just saw the latest screenshots and...

Am I gonna like se5 as much as I think I am?

How the heck should they know what you like. But to answer prematurely: "Hell yes!!"

It has all the best elements and fixes things that were not so good in Space Empires IV, plus it has true 3D graphics and is even more moddable... so what do you think?

The only reason why you might not enjoy it as much is that you've been playing Space Empires for the last 5 years so the type of the game may not be as fresh. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...ies/tongue.gif

It's true that we can't violate the NDA, but it's even more true that we can't violate the laws of physics. Since the game that will be released is months away from completion, we really don't know what it will be like. Time is only one-way as far as we know. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif

Seriously, this is still in the very early stages of development. Huge amounts of changes could be in the works.

I have it on good authority from one of the beta testers that there will be TWICE as much nudity in SE5 than there was in SE4.

To protect the person's identity, i wont mention names.

Considering that very few of the ALIENS appeared with any sort of clothing in SE4, and the Jraenar pic from SE5 shows him wearing some sort of shawl, somehow I doubt that http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

Re: A question to SEV beta testers

Nice pic dogscoff, but don't you think the guns need a second 'strap' to help keep the barrel aligned? As is I think the the guns would eventually hang low in the front. Also there should be a horizontal strap around the front breast of the 'worthogish-bovine' to help keep the guns in place after the recoil.

then again, if everything is weightless in space it might not need more straps at all, you could also be using 'velcro' to hold it in place, hard to tell from this angle.

Oh well, it's still a nice pic, and if you chop off the head it would make a nice race portrait.

Cheers! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

El_Phil June 2nd, 2005 09:50 AM

Re: A question to SEV beta testers

Maybe weightless but there's still reaction. Newton's 3rd law and all that. So unless the guns fire zero kinetic energy rounds there will be recoil, hence the need for more straps.

El Phil waits patiently for this physics to be torn apart

Woot! More screenshots for SEIV! It looks like even the ship designs are getting more attention than they did in Starfury.

One by one over the last 2 years every single video/computer game I've looked forward to has built me up, then dropped me like a rock. Its been brutal to be me. I used to have a video game addiction, now I can't even work up enough interest to play a game when I have time to play one. Its SO depressing... Save me SE5!!!

Who said they were guns? They're mustard dispensers. And the strap is just for show- they are kept in place by magnets, kind of like those window-washy-gizmos, where you put one half on the outside of the glass, then move it about with a magnet on the inside...

Indeed it does. Or, to put it another way, the head did make a nice portrait until I stuck a body on it...

What, you never read the race description? They ARE cows!

Quote:

The Texrak are a quad-pedal species that exists in great herds. They are a strongly pack oriented society and never venture far from their family. They spend most of their life time grazing the vast plains of their homeworld. They have an average lifespan of 30 years.

Admittedly I rarely read the descripts. But that stil wouldnt have put "cows" in my impression from that head. Maybe hogs, or something rhinocerous looking. Still it is a great picture

Narf: Hand drawn in Paintshop Pro, if memory serves correctly. (although the head, obviously, is cut&pasted from the game's files)

Didn't even use my artpad & pen for that one either, I'm pretty sure it was a mouse job. I also did ones for the Zynarra and Bobrobans - http://www.dogscoff.co.uk/propresp.htm

My artistic talents are very hit and miss. Sometimes I sit down and sketch out something to the standard of the battlecow first time. Other times I sit for hours and hours and produce nothing decent whatsoever. Also, my extraordinary talent for laziness means I produce images at a rate of about 3 or 4 per year- that's only slightly lower than my Othaglot & Cane chapter output. Although slow, my writing skills are far more consistent, so I think if I ever wanted to earn a living creatively, it would be with a pen rather than a paintbrush. Would be cool to design my own cover art though.

Also, I don't think there's much of a market for hand-drawn monsters, which seems to be my forte. That said, I have long been thinking about putting a portfolio/gallery on my website, featuring some of my better pictures. Never got round to it though.

Thanks for the comment though Narf, that's a real compliment.

Please feel free to email/ PM me. I'm always looking for new graphics to pile up on my heap of unfinished projects.

(seriously, there is a chance that I'll finish whatever it is, it just comes down to how well I can draw whatever it is you want drawn.)

A really nifty free fantasy/strategy game where you command an army of elves, humans, dwarves, or undead, recruit new units, etc. Your units can even gain levels and become other types of units!
