OT: Know any good Canadian chemical suppliers?

Well, do you? I'm looking for a Canadian supplier, American won't do due to restrictions on shipping chemicals across the border, and prohibitive shipping fees. Don't worry, I'm not planning on cooking drugs or things like that http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif Just trying to get the chemicals so I can create a few SAFE mixtures, such as thermite.

Sigma-Aldrich likely have a warehouse based out of the Vancouver area.

One of these things is not like the other!

Well, after it's lit maybe http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif However, it is quite stable before, during, and after creation. After all, its just a mixture of powdered Iron (III) Oxide and powdered aluminum. It's not heat, shock or flame sensitive, so yeah, I consider it fairly safe. Seeing as how it takes massive heat (such as burning magnesium) to set it off, and not even the heat of a blowtorch is enough to light it, it's pretty safe. But after it's lit...well you better hope it's not on something you value too much! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...es/redface.gif Can't put it out with water or smothering...not to mention the fact it reaches extremely high temperatures...in the thousands of degrees Celcius. I'm not just some goof messing around, I have a bit of knowledge when it comes to chemistry! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...ies/tongue.gif

Anyways, thanks for the name Kwok, it should help a lot.

I have purchased laboratory-grade chemicals for work from Anachemia and Fisher Scientific. I am in Vancouver. Fisher is in Ontario but Anachemia has a local office in Richmond.

Thanks Kamog, I'll look into it and see if I can find their website. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Yep! But really, most chemicals are legal to possess and buy in Canada.

Well, I don't think I'm a threat to national security, unless putting a few holes in some of our fields makes me a threat! Arab persuasion? Nah, I'm as white (and European descended) as they come. Norwegian!

The last thing on my mind is destroying gov't buildings...I really don't get the point of terrorism.

Hmmm... isn't Hugo Weaving (aka Agent Smith, the Ultimate Person in Business Suit with Dark Glasses) a Canadian?

Oh ... cheat, cheat, cheat ...

everyone knows you get the iorn oxide by moistening steel wool an leaving it to rust. And the aluminum dust by taking a steel file to an aluminum ladder. You kids these days with your shortcuts.

Now here's a question - Did it have to be Mt. Doom, or would any source of lava do?

Yes, the ring was forged in the fires of Mount Doom, only there can it be unmade, Mr. Anderson.

Re: OT: Know any good Canadian chemical suppliers

I'd say it would have to Mt. Doom, in the ID mountain range just before Mt. Quake.

Yep, I have tons of rusting iron around my house here, but I'm just too lazy to take a file to it and get enough rust! Which is why I was looking for the easy route. But the easy route is expensive. So I'll make my own rust. As for aluminum, well that's simple. I have a half pound of pure aluminum that I cast into a throwing star shape in metal shop class at school a couple years back. Easy enough to grind down. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

I think I remember one of the books saying that only the fires of Mt. Doom were hot enough. Now, nothing is said of any other volcano that I can remember, so it may have simply been a lack of other options that forced them to go to Mt. Doom.

Re: OT: Know any good Canadian chemical suppliers

Hmmm, well nothing has panned out so far in my chemical hunting quest. So I figured I'd bump this back up to the top, and see if anyone has any other companies they could recommend to supply small amounts of certain chemicals to a private citizen in Canada? Again, help would be very much appreciated!

Canadian chemical regulations suck. Anything possibly or remotely related to pyrotechnics is restricted, and usually unavailable for sale. Sometimes laws just suck.

Re: OT: Know any good Canadian chemical suppliers?

Go out of town to some old farm estate auctions. They have large piles of rust there Look for old burn barrels and steel equipment. If they are old enough, you can scrape it off with a butter knife. Tell the people you are just trying to see how much metal is left. It may be good for about a pound. If you are talking large amounts it would not work.

Renegade are you thinking about making an explosive? If so I must caution you that explosive can lead to blindness and or missing limbs. I stronly suggest that you abandon your chemical quest and move onto a more future securing hobby like polar bear wrestling or free fall sky diving.

Yes, Hugo Weaving is Australian, just like Sam Neil...no wait he's actually a Kiwi by way of Ireland, or Russell Crowe...no wait he's a Kiwi too. I've got it Hugo Weaving is as Australian as Mel Gibson...who actually moved here when he was 12. Well I think Mr Weaving is Australian unlike half the actors in Australia.

Re: OT: Know any good Canadian chemical suppliers

Nah AT, I'm just trying to build thermite, a mixture of iron oxide (rust) and aluminum. It is used in commercial welding mostly. However, it's also really neat, it'll burn through solid steel. I just wanted to try it out, but unfortunately it seems it's not going to work. The magnesium ribbon needed to set it off it A:)not available or B:) Way way too expensive. I'm not gonna spend $90 on 25 grams of the stuff, even though it would last forever. I just don't have that kind of cash lying around.

So no, explosives aren't what I'm looking to make, and it seems like I won't be making anything at all. At least not for a long while.

El_Phil July 16th, 2005 06:25 PM

Re: OT: Know any good Canadian chemical suppliers

Thermite, in my experience at least, is a big disappointment. The reaction is unimpressive and you can never get together decent quantities of the ingredients in the correct ratio to get a good reaction. So your not missing alot. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

Re: OT: Know any good Canadian chemical suppliers

I feel your pain Renegade http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif Never made Thermite before but observing it burn through solid steel would be impressive.

Hell, everything is regulated/restricted these days. And those that aren't are modified.

Random Piece of trivia. I'm sure most chemistry students will know the effects of the age-old "weedkiller and sugar" explosive. So now even weedkiller is actually laced with "flame retardents" to stop such activities.

Ah, I'll just stick with the old fertilizer and diesel explosive. Of course, you have to find the right fertilizer for that to work...

And nope, I don't like fire or explosions or anything like that one tiny little bit http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/smirk.gif

The problem is never the explosive, its the dets. The difference between a high and a low explosive in fact.

Still nothing wrong with good old ANFO (Ammonium Nitrate Fuel Oil), especially if you chuck in some aluminium or plastic ball bearings to sensitise it. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/eek.gif

As for your obvious "dislike" of explosives I pray you never meet my friend Ford. (Named after HGTTG) She's the only human I know that could possibly blow up earth (And not for putting a hyperspace bypass in it's place either.) Like the MacGyver of Wanton Destruction.
