Question about helos

Is there a way to make the helicopters fly over enemy infrantry, because I am making a Mogadishu map and everytime I send blackhawk the enemy intercepts it and my blackhawk retreats. Cant even reach the target building because of that. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Re: Question about helos

If the enemy is not suppressed, as soon as your helis come in range of their AA weapon they will try to shoot you down. They see you and they will fire at you, try a different route to the target!

Re: Question about helos

They only have rifles and pistols, im sure a blackhawk would fly over them and not retreat.

Re: Question about helos

Rifles and pistols fire on helis that came on the same hex of the unit, after all the range is minimal and bullets flying all over may let the heli to flee or take evasive action.

try flying over them at high altitude.

Re: Question about helos

I tried it, they can fire my heli from 100 meters and then it retreats.

Re: Question about helos

The best way to avoid their rifles fire if not able to suppress them,is to pass by at, at least, 2 hexes.

Re: Question about helos

Yep, I have decreased some enemy infantry from the part of the city where the helis are coming, so they get to the target building more easily.

Re: Question about helos

I think increasing your morale and experience might help. To be honest, most helos would avoid fire. They will get close in but not too close.

It would be foolhardy for a chopper to come right on top of the enemy and yes, a rifle bullet well placed can bring down a chopper.

I think caution on the part of the pilots is a wise thing.
We want realism in this game and I believe that this approach is the more realistic.

Alternative solution:

you might want to have the enemy units (or some of them)appear as reinforcements one or two turns after the choppers pass by. It'll increase the chance of them getting through.

We put this mod in some time ago.

in the original SP system things like Vietnam scenarios were a cake-walk for the human player as enemy riflemen could do nothing against helicopters overflying thier hex. hidden ambushers were simply to be found by buying a couple of helos and methodically flying over the map. Even snipers were easy to find, if you passed the helicopter over the hex 2-3 times it would spot the hidden duug-in sniper.

In reality, if an enemy helo comes close, it will get a burst of AK fire. So - now troops will blast at close-by enemy helicopters. (See blackhawk down for an example).
