looking for a space combat game

I've played Freespace 2, that is so far as I know the best space combat "simulator" yet released, it was released 1999 I belive.
Has there not been any better game in that genre released since then??

Anyone know of a good Space combat game, like X-wing and Tie fighter and Freespace?
Any game that's better than freespace 2?, preferably with the same license as Freespace 2;
When installing the game you get the message that you are free to copy the game for friends and relatives.. that's unusual!! and handy when you want to play multiplayer games with friends who don't have the game.

There has been nothing worth getting that has been as good as Freespace and Freespace II. However Freelancer has its moments, but is otherwise a borning - go get X cargo and deliver to Y planet while defending against attacks. It provides some nice combat, but NOTHING on the scale or control, or enjoyment as Freespace.

Freelancer is okay your first time through but then it becomes boring. However, install a good mod such as Freelancer Rebalance and it can hold your attention for quite some time. And the controls arent that bad, they just require some adaptability. I fly with the keyboard and aim with the mouse, and by bro uses the mouse for both. It all depends on player preference. Personally I kinda like the control setup. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/cool.gif

Freespace was best played with Joystick Keyboard combination. Oh the dog fights that game had. To bad it was not multiplayer. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif

Speaking of which, why hasn't some game company taken advantage of MP space flight/flight sims? Oh come on now, a remake of Tie fighter vs X -wing would be awsome. I am sure there are other space fight/flight game sout, ORB - Defiance (?), and others.

Re: looking for a space combat game

The developers released the sourcecode of Freespace 2 to the public and there has been vast improvements to FS2_open, and there are many multiplayer missions now.

But there ought to be some game that rivals it after almost 6 years, shouldn't it??!?
I haven't bought any game for a long time and haven't looked into new games that's been published, so I'd be glad for any tips.

Freelancer, hmm, will look up some reviews.

Freespace was the KOTH and still is. God I miss that game. To bad about Interplay though. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif

We should make up some FS2 multiplayer maps based on famous SE4 battles http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Why? The heart and soul have been torn out of the majority of the game industry.

Too true.

There you can find Freespace 2 The Source Code Project(fs2_open) and much more, including a Babylon 5 total conversion of FS2.
I have to agree, Freespace 2 is really excellent. The only other space sim I enjoyed as much is Privateer 2.
Freelancer 2 had its moments, having an especially good atmosphere, cool asteriod fields, and interesting star systems(though the scale was wrong), but the game itself is good for little else than short blow-em-up trips, which is fun only for a little while.

The only space sim I'm looking forward to is X3. What X2 lacked was a good flight model, and hopefully X3 will fix that, along with lots of other improvements.

I Highly recommend the Freespace 2 Babylon 5 Total Conversion.

And since i'm such a Babylon 5 fan I would also recommend I Found Her, which is still in development and short, but simply excellent.

And they're both free http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif As for actual new games that have just been released I'm not particularly aware of any http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif

Perhaps the Independence War games? They are the only recent games I can think of, Freespace excepted, that would be worth its grain of salt in the flight sim department (though the ships flown there aren't exactly fighters).

Other than that, I would definitively recommand the FS1 port for FS2: play Freespace 1 at the decent resolution of 1024X768. Or you could try third party campaigns, like Derelict or the Aeos (?) Affair.

A good, independant space combat game developer: http://starwraith3dgames.home.att.net/index.htm

Re: looking for a space combat game

Derelict was arguably as good as the main FS2 campaign. The main reason there's still nothing to match FreeSpace is that no-ones made anything like it recently. Freelancer lacked the scale and sheer fun of charging around in any ship with dual Kaysers. Till the energy ran out... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif

Alneyan July 10th, 2005 06:12 AM

Re: looking for a space combat game

I have always been partial to a Mara myself, with the standard double Kaysers (energy has never been much of a problem though, as few targets take more than a few hits to go down): jolly fun! And that Mara mission gives so many nice vessels to take down, all for yourself...

Still, my favourite will be the Great Hunt (I think) in FS1, where you try to catch up with You Know What. The mission can be downright easy (run like the coward you are!), or you can have some fun taking down everything on your way (destroyer included, of course), and without losing a single ship in your escort. Dofighting madness! (And hope the friendly bombers can deliver the goods...)

A question to all of you who played freespace 2, the first time you played the last mission (the one that the capella star goes nova) did you survive? i didn't it was unexpected i was faaaaar from the jump node... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...s/rolleyes.gif

I got killed while trying to protect as many ships as possible actually, so I didn't see the Thingy the first time around. Once I started flying more cautiously, I got killed by the Thingy, and before you ask, I failed to Dive! Dive! Dive! Hit your burners pilot!

Re: looking for a space combat game

Freespace? Looks pretty, but not so great as a space combat game. Edit: Oh! I thought you meant "FreeLancer". FreeSpace was ok, but too simplistic for my tastes.

For a space combat "simulator", I would look at the Independence War series or Starshatter long before I turned to Freespace.

Bring on the Kaysers to teach the heretical spawn proper manners! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

Kidding aside, Ruatha titled his thread "space combat game", but added "simulator" in the post. I would agree that Freespace fits the bill of a more arcade-based game (though it's far from being Tyrian, or a similar game), instead of being a "true" simulator, pretty much like Vroom is hardly the same as a F1 simulation.

I am not sure about a suggestion in the simulation department though... but I will check out that Starshatter PvK mentioned.

I like Starfleet Command. It's a bit different than Freespace as it's a 2D simulation (3D graphics, but combat happens on the X-Y axis with no Z). It has some nice scenarios and a plethora of ship types. As an old school fan of the board game Star Fleet Battles, it has another level of enjoyment for me being based on it.

Re: looking for a space combat game

I've played most of those games (maybe all, iirc).

The best one, the one that really made me feel like I was in a space ship was Independance War 2.

In fact, I just bought it again. Its under $20 including shipping:

On another note, Allegiance may be of interest to you: it is a multiplayer game with some strategy elements mixed in, where you can pilot a variety of vessels or act as the commander. I've found the game to be pretty enjoyable, and it's free, so you can't go wrong at that price tag. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif
