Newbie Game

Hi. I'm looking for any new people who might be interested in starting a game for newbies. We'd use one of the standard maps, no mods.

Any interest?

Hubris July 8th, 2005 07:08 PM

Re: Newbie Game

I've been playing about 2 months. I'd be interested. I'm not sure how "newbie" I am, but I like to play so...

Arkas July 8th, 2005 11:24 PM

Re: Newbie Game

I'm interested.

I've only played 1.5 games via here.

cryingdevil July 9th, 2005 11:05 AM

Re: Newbie Game

Arholly July 9th, 2005 01:58 PM

Re: Newbie Game

Alright, that's four of us. As soon as I get everything set up, I'll post the information. Hopefully by sunday.

Arholly July 9th, 2005 07:58 PM

Re: Newbie Game

I think we'll do Britian, which has a max of 7 players. What do people want to play?

Hubris July 9th, 2005 09:49 PM

Re: Newbie Game

I'll take Marignon.

Arholly July 9th, 2005 10:48 PM

Send god files to "dominions (at) verizon (dot) net".

Hubris July 10th, 2005 02:40 PM

Re: Newbie Game

PBEM? I don't know if I'm down for that. If you want I can host.

Arholly July 10th, 2005 03:41 PM

Re: Newbie Game

Alright, if you want to host, I'm cool with that. Let me figure out what I want to play.

Hubris July 10th, 2005 05:37 PM

Re: Newbie Game

Sure, I'll put it up when everyone declares nation.

thejeff July 10th, 2005 06:39 PM

Re: Newbie Game

If you don't mind another, I'd like to join in.

I've played sp for awhile, but this will be my first multiplayer.

What settings do you want to use for the game?

Indie strength? Research? Magic sites? Richness?

Barring something weird in those, I'd like to take Arcosephale.

ioticus July 10th, 2005 06:49 PM

Re: Newbie Game

Can I play too? Pleeeeease? I'll take Ulm.

King Lear July 11th, 2005 12:56 AM

Re: Newbie Game

If you either have a person drop, or need one more, I'd like to play. Tien Chi might be interesting.

Arholly July 11th, 2005 07:07 AM

Re: Newbie Game

I'll take Pangea. Never tried them before so it should be interesting.

Argitoth July 11th, 2005 11:20 AM

Re: Newbie Game

I WANT C'TIS!!

King Lear July 11th, 2005 02:53 PM

Re: Newbie Game

Arholly- Pangea :

Hubris- Marigon :

Arkas-? :

CryingDevil:-? :

TheJeff- Arco :

Ioticus- Ulm :

Argitoth- C'tis :

Anyone have emails for Arkas or Devil?

Just a thought.

Arholly July 11th, 2005 07:30 PM

Re: Newbie Game

I was thinking nothing wierd in the settings, maybe make indie strength 4.

Argitoth July 12th, 2005 02:39 PM

Re: Newbie Game

This is a TCP/IP game, yeah? If not I'll host for you. I wouldn't join a PBM. It's ok if you want to do PBM but I just won't want to play...

Crape, I just realized I'm way too experienced to be in this newb game. Count me out, don't want to ruin the game.

Arkas July 13th, 2005 11:49 AM

Re: Newbie Game

Doh, been busy and havent checked here in the last few days.

I will go with Abysia.

I am going to change my settings and have it display my email addy. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

cryingdevil July 13th, 2005 03:01 PM

Re: Newbie Game

actually, after thinking it over for a while, i would like to take machaka pls.

Hubris July 13th, 2005 03:06 PM

Re: Newbie Game

ok, game is up. hubrisrakarth.game-host.org port 2010.

Soon as all pretenders are up and I hear what settings you want, I'll start it.

thejeff July 13th, 2005 03:35 PM

Re: Newbie Game

I don't much care about the other settings, but I'd suggest indie strength above 4. Britain's pretty small, less than 9 land provinces apiece. A little more resistance to the initial land grabs might make it more interesting. We're going to be fighting soon enough anyway.

In a few test starts, I was usually at war with the AI by turn 10. Either they or I were boxed in before then.

Arholly July 13th, 2005 06:49 PM

Re: Newbie Game

Alright, I'll have mine up tonight I think. Tomorrow morning for sure.

ioticus July 13th, 2005 07:36 PM

Re: Newbie Game

I put my pretender in for Ulm.

Arholly July 13th, 2005 09:23 PM

Re: Newbie Game

What's the IP? I tried connecting and it wouldn't let me.

King Lear July 13th, 2005 11:56 PM

Re: Newbie Game

On such a crowded map I think that I'll drop out. Well, that and the fact that I'm house-sitting for my cousin, and don't have my computer with me till monday.

That being said, I do agree with theJeff's suggestions for higher indis; 6 i would suggest.

So, next point of business, if anyone decides that they no longer have time to play (assuming you start before monday), I'll happily either sub for a couple of turns, or take over entirely. Just say the word. you can reach me at markoos at mail.utexas.edu . There we go.

cryingdevil July 14th, 2005 03:37 AM

Re: Newbie Game

how does this work, am i suppose to send my pretender to someone or wut? and wuts the ip?

thejeff July 14th, 2005 09:26 AM

Re: Newbie Game

I was able to connect and upload a pretender last night, somewhen between ioticus's and Arholly's posts.

I tried again later and again this morning and couldn't connect, so something has changed on Hubris site.

cryingdevil:
It should be simple.

Have your pretender designed.
Network
Connect to Server
Enter the IP/URL (from Hubris post above)
Enter the port
It'll give you a list of kingdoms
Select yours
Don't push "Start Game"

That's it. Of course you'll have to wait until the server's back up.

cryingdevil July 14th, 2005 07:07 PM

Re: Newbie Game

well i guess i'll check back every once in a while to see if hubris put the server back up.

thejeff July 20th, 2005 01:49 PM

Re: Newbie Game

It's been a week.
Is there still interest in this game?

Do we want to go ahead without hubris, or keep waiting?

I can host if we want to go ahead. I haven't hosted before, but it looks straightforward.

Hubris July 20th, 2005 01:53 PM

Re: Newbie Game

Well, I can only assume you guys don't read the Gotterdamerung forum. I apologize for the delays, life's been kind of hectic. I'm surprised you guys didnt' start w/o me.

Anyway, server is up.
hubrisrakarth.game-host.org
port 2010

Arkas July 20th, 2005 03:19 PM

Re: Newbie Game

Joining up tonight and no, i dont check the gotterdamerung forum.

thejeff July 20th, 2005 04:09 PM

Re: Newbie Game

Excellent.

I did see your original post on Gotterdamerung, but that didn't sound like you'd be away long. After a while, I figured things had gotten more complicated and figured I'd see what people wanted to do.

Glad you're back.

Arholly July 20th, 2005 06:34 PM

Re: Newbie Game

Cool, now who was I playing again?

ioticus July 20th, 2005 07:39 PM

Re: Newbie Game

Well I uploaded my pretender again and am still waiting for the game to get off the ground.

Arholly July 20th, 2005 09:17 PM

Re: Newbie Game

Uploaded my pretender.

Hubris July 21st, 2005 02:07 PM

Re: Newbie Game

Pasted from the Gotterdamerung thread:

Oh, and uh... first off, man, this has got to be the most accident prone game ever. The only thing I can say is that I'm doing the best I can...

So uh... apparently my new connection is not stable enough to maintain a single IP address. It switches without even telling anyone. Good to know... now...

But this causes a problem. Since I don't know when it goes down, I can easily check and fix the URL once or twice a day, but not all the time. Which means it's unfair to have any time limit on the turns.

If there's one thing I will say about this game, it seems to be a VERY good game, and we have one of the most dedicated crowds I've ever seen. So I'm going to leave it on quickhost for now, and just trust everyone to do their turns. Also, this is all my contact information, so if it does go down, you can get in touch with me without me having to check these forums.

AIM: Uberd00d2
MSN: hrakarth@hotmail.com
email: hubris@ucla.edu (or hrakarth@hotmail.com)

If anyone else wants to host, plz do so.

thejeff July 21st, 2005 02:47 PM

Re: Newbie Game

As I said before, I'm willing to host.

I've put a server up:
silverfool.com
port: 2010

I've set indies to 6, everything else default, which was, I think, the latest plan.

Hubris,

I've had similar connection problems in the past. There are several free
"dynamic DNS" services which can remap domain names when your IP
changes. I use ZoneEdit. You might want to check something like that out.

Arholly July 21st, 2005 11:44 PM

Re: Newbie Game

Uploaded mine.

Arkas July 22nd, 2005 04:47 PM

Re: Newbie Game

Im going to pass on this now. Im going out of town for the weekend.

Hubris July 24th, 2005 03:37 AM

Re: Newbie Game

I'm in.

Also, I'm using dyndns, but if it switches when I'm not looking, then there will be a several hours where you can't log in and the turn timer will still be going.

King Lear July 26th, 2005 05:23 PM

Re: Newbie Game

Is the silverfool server still up? I seem to be having trouble with it.

thejeff July 27th, 2005 12:08 PM

Re: Newbie Game

It was down, along with the rest of my internet connection, for a day or so. Apparently the result of a bad phone cord to the dsl modem. Last thing I thought to check.
It should be stable again.

Where do we stand on starting this anyway?

I see the following have uploaded:
Arholly Pangaea
Hubris Marignon
thejeff Arcosephale
King Lear Tien Ch'i

Of the other who'd shown interest:
Arkas Abysia
was going to pass, but since we didn't start last weekend, he can still come back.

cryingdevil Machaka
ioticus Ulm
Haven't heard from them since the original server problems.

Since we're down a few, I'd welcome any other newbies who want to try, but I'd like to get started soon.
Start tomorrow evening with whoever we have?

King Lear July 27th, 2005 02:08 PM

Re: Newbie Game

I'm good with starting sooner rather than later. I do wonder however which map we're using? That might be nice to know...

Arkas July 27th, 2005 02:22 PM

Re: Newbie Game

you can count me back in. I thought you all were trying to get it up and going this past fri/weekend. Can we also get a comprehensive list of what the settings are. I looked back and saw some changes and things, all of which has confused my fragile little mind. I just need a little clarification. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...es/biggrin.gif

thejeff July 27th, 2005 03:19 PM

Re: Newbie Game

It's already later.

Pretty basic settings.
The map is Britain.
Indies 6, everything else default.
No mods.

That's what I'd gathered from the discussions, so that's what I used.

Server is at silverfool.com
Port 2010

Arholly July 28th, 2005 07:19 AM

Re: Newbie Game

Im in.

thejeff July 29th, 2005 03:27 PM

Re: Newbie Game

No sounds of new interest, so as soon as Arkas uploads a pretender we can get going (hint, hint).
