STARGATE and BSG
How many of you were able to see the premier episode for season nine of Stargate- better known now as Far-gate?
All in all it was a good episode, a bit short, less than 40 minutes long, and although there was only a short scene with O'Neal, the new cast members seem to fit right in. Obviously there are some problems but over all not bad. As for Atlantis, well that show was also good. I really enjoyed BSG. Damn this show is just addicitively good to watch. I do hope they keep it on the air as it was a far better show, action and pace, than both of the SG shows. Edit changed name of thread from FarGate to Stargate. |
Re: FAR-GATE and BSG
Well I have never heard it refered to as far gate in any case.
SG-1 Although O'neill leaves a gap in the show, just hope they dont screw up like they did in season 6 with a Jackson replacement, keep the new Colonel from acting like O'neill. Atlantis- Good show my only problem with it is they are nuke happy- if you watch last season and this ones preimier you know what I mean. As for BSG, I have seen the old ones which kept me leary when this show first came out but now I relize its great. as for the new ep. Great, one problem is their computers should have has record of the old jump spot and been able to jump to the old one. |
Re: FAR-GATE and BSG
I like the Jackson replacement. And its referred to as Far-Gate because of Ben Bowder and whats her name.
About atlantis, the nuke they set off over the city, what do you think the fall out is going to do to the people that live on the main land of the planet? As to Jump Spots, well FTL is not like mapping a route to the park. They could not extrapulate the jump distance and location from their new location. There is a certain degree of random drift that requires them to update coordinates. The fleets coordinates were not updated so they jumped to an entirely differant location than Galactica. The only way to find them was to return to point of origin, recalculate the jump and jump. There is a lot of real world physics involved. Moore is no dummy when it comes to covering his bases on the science of things. To me it adds a degree of realism to the show that was sworely lacking in all of the ST series say for TOS. BSG is a great series thus far, and all I have read are good post about the show. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif |
Re: FAR-GATE and BSG
SG-1, great season opener. Bowders Character seems alot like O'Niel so far, but if the writing is descent he should grow, and thats OK.
Atlantis, yes, nuke happy, but they seemed to work so I guess if they had them and didn't use them it would seem funny (They use them in BSG I think, as well as having them in B5,). It will be interesting to see if they address the fallout for the mainland. Given a whole planet and the fact that it is already established that the mainland is a fair trip away even by jumper, it wouldn't nessecarilly be an issue but I bet the writers can't pass it up. BSG, Haven't seen a better writen show since B5, IMO. Never saw the first series though, too young. I was hooked when they left the ships behind that couldn't jump in the opener, addictive is an understatement. The scene with the little girl was just sad, they really make you feel for her. Thats what I call good writing annyway. |
Re: FAR-GATE and BSG
I never got into the SG series. When a friend told me he loved the show, I tried but I'm too far behind and don't get the references, so I've written it off.
BSG is ok but there are no good guys. Everyone is a jackass to everyone else when it suits them so I just don't care much if they live or die. I grew up watching the originals and this new one has taken the nobility of purpose out and replaced it with a flippant, arrogant attitude. "Don't frack with me", "oh yea? Don't frack with me!" Oh yea, yea!??!, Don't fracking frack with my fracking blah, blah, blah, blah I'm holding on to my interest in it by a thread bare string, and only because its the only SciFi I have right now. If they take a step off center or something else comes along, I'm done. |
Re: FAR-GATE and BSG
Ehh... excuse me guys, but what is BSG?
|
Re: FAR-GATE and BSG
Battlestar Galactica.
|
Re: FAR-GATE and BSG
Aha, thanks for the translation.
Hmm... I must say I doubt if it is as good as the people here tell us. I do trust them, but I'm very sceptical. I've seen some episodes of the of Battlestar Galactica and I didn't like it at all, save for the miniskirts and the Cylons. Thumbs up for the miniskirts! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...es/biggrin.gif |
Re: FAR-GATE and BSG
Yeah, thats the nature of Sci-Fi, you either like it or you don't. Everyone has different tastes. I do agree with Iron Giant though, they are all jackasses and they swear alot (yes, they change a few letters around, but the meaning is still there), but I'm still enjoying the show.
|
Re: FAR-GATE and BSG
But don't the majority of people swear a lot and be jackasses? Well maybe not the majority, but a enough to make the world a less pleasant place...

Re: FAR-GATE and BSG
Ok, the word Fracking is about as enjoyable to hear spoken as it is to hear Rosean Bar sing the National Anthum. I prefer the wrold Frelling, it sounds so much more adaptable than Fracking.

Re: FAR-GATE and BSG
BSG is too confusing to watch just one episode. You have to watch several episodes before you actually get what's going on, and start enjoying it. On Stargate SG-1, you love it instantly, or you don't.

Re: FAR-GATE and BSG
Love SG-1, not really sold on Atlantis but continue to watch, although it is cool that Earth now has 2 spaceships. I like Claudia Black's character alot (well, OK, I just like Claudia Black). I'll have to wait on Ben's character to see if he winds up being a clone of O'Neill or not. While I have several issues (far too many & take too long to discuss) with BSG, I am coming around. It's really well-crafted, but they fracked with the story too much from the original to put it mildly. Towards Iron Giant's point, I think they are trying to make Apollo the "hero".

Re: FAR-GATE and BSG
Don't forget to tune in an hour earlier Friday because Sci-Fi will be showing Firefly. Man, talk about 4 hours of good television.

Re: FAR-GATE and BSG
Good series. I bought it on DVD and still will watch it. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif Thanks Todd.

Re: FAR-GATE and BSG
SG-1 and Atlantis are enjoyable throw-away shows (don't get me wrong, I've been watching SG-1 since the end of season 2), in the vein of Star Trek TNG and Voyager where things get "reset" at the end of the episode, with last season being one of the notable exceptions.
Battlestar Galactica is more of a drama with a building plotline. Frankly I have to tape it to get through the stressful scenes so I can walk away for a minute... "No more Mister nice Gaius!!" That slayed me. |
Re: FAR-GATE and BSG
SG 1 was just good Sci-Fi TV. Now a days it seems more like soap opera sci fi tv who's greater days are behind them. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif They should have made a complete cast break with a two hour season opener cast send off. They should have brought Jonas back and had regular old cast special appearances. Oh ya, they should also keep T'lec (Sp) as he would be good for the show.
|
Re: FAR-GATE and BSG
AT they are going for a total cast break in the end however they are being smart about it with a slower introduction to the newer cast bit by bit.
Browder is not much like O'niel at all if you actually look at the two characters Mitchell is still very haunted by his injury during the Antarctic fight and is still very unsure of himself, O'niel was always sure of himself even after the whole his son killed himself deal. Browder is also a little bit MORE flyboyish then O'Niel in the sense that he seems much more skiddish about being in a ground firefight for example when T'ealc tried to shoot through that door and Mitchell goes "Whoah, woah woah!.....bullets BOUNCE" and jumped around. O'Niel wouldn't have done that. Now as to Atlantis I like it but they are still busy trying to grow the characters so we'll have to see if they can ever manage to settle the characters in to their respective personalities. As far as BSG goes yeah it's a long term drama not an episodic show, as far as the "language' issue goes well they are military and most of them are "sailors" to boot which btw are renowned for having a foul mouth. And it is as far as I can tell pretty accurate to real world military as most of the navy and marine folks I've met cuss a LOT. As far as Frack vs Frell, well Frack is a throwback to the old show but this time they actually make it sound like a cuss word where back in the original series it sounded more like someone saying "Dang". And the real F word is hardly pretty so I guess they figure FRACK should be just as ugly sounding so I like it http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif |
Re: FAR-GATE and BSG
Don't get me wrong Starhawk, I like the show. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif I even like the fact that they kinda sorta used my "book of origins" concept. (More proof that no idea is oringal.

Re: FAR-GATE and BSG
Back when it started, it took me a couple of years to get into Stargate. But when I started watching it, I got hooked fast.
The original movie, "Stargate" is very much worth watching. Go rent it if you haven't seen it. As to the new characters, I always loved Farscape, so having Ben Browder and Claudia Black show up just seemed to carry on what they had going on that show. Rather than trying to think of him as "O'Neil-ish", it just seems like Ben Browder is still Ben Browder almost just carrying on his Farscape character. Anyways, the two of them have a good chemistry, and the Daniel Jackson - Claudia Black pair also are funny to watch. Atlantis is slowly growing on me. It has always seemed a little slower and flatter than SG-1. But they seem to be learning. BTW, they show so many SG-1 reruns on nights other than Fridays, that it doesn't take all that long to see most of the series. Of course, I've got a DVR programmed to record anything with Stargate in the title, so I tend to have several of those around to watch whenever there's nothing else on. BattleStar Galactica is absolutely amazing. I'm always absolutely glued to the edge of my seat watching that show. I also record it, but that just lets me FF through the commercials so it comes through as a straight 45 min or whatever kick in the chops to me. No commercials, no breaks in the tension. Just right in your face till its done. The new BSG is very, very, different from the old Lorne Greene shows. That was cute TV, with Egyptian costumes and a cute mechanical dog, and other tv-land bs. The new BSG is very, very different. Dark, edgy, tension-filled TV. Like I said, I watch it straight through without the commercial breaks. And at the end I just want to sit back finally in my chair and go "whhhheeeeewwww". And I immediately wish I didn't have to wait a week for the next one. Right now, the new BSG is probably the one and only TV show that I'm really anxious to see a new episode of when it comes out. |
Re: FAR-GATE and BSG
Well said, well said. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Re: FAR-GATE and BSG
The only problem I have BSG is that to me it has no replayablity effect. Stargate and Atlantis to some extent I can watch over and over but BSG I watch it once and its great but I never like it rewatching it, dont know how to explain it.
|
Re: FAR-GATE and BSG
I tend to agree, BSG is best served hot, while SG you can eat hot or cold and often. BSG is like KFC, while SG is like Pizza. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif
|
Re: FAR-GATE and BSG
Nah, BSG is more like a nice juicy medium-rare steak. It's great fresh off the barbeque, but try reheating it in the microwave...ick. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...ies/tongue.gif

Re: FAR-GATE and BSG
Don't re-heat meat in the microwave! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif
|
Re: FAR-GATE and BSG
I love stargate but a little disappointed in the actor choices, I think it would have been more ideal to only have one of the ex farscape actors thus removing the farscape feeling i get when they interact.
Also not sure if anyone else noticed but i believe the new doctor was Romi on Andromeda. |
Re: FAR-GATE and BSG
I never watched farscape, so I don't get that feeling when watching. And yes, the new doctor and Romi are the same.
|
Re: FAR-GATE and BSG
Ohhh - you missed some good sci-fi my friend.
|
Re: FAR-GATE and BSG
I'll have to see if they're rerunning it on some channel. I'm always up for some good sci-fi.
|
Re: FAR-GATE and BSG
Yeah Lexa Doig http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif hubba hubba, she's married to Michael Shanks (AKA. Doctor Jackson) and they've already had kiddlings lol.
|
Re: FAR-GATE and BSG
Lexa is very attractive. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif And that voice......
I really like the crossing of sci-fi show tallent here. It brings in a lot of new viewers, or so they hope, and it does give the actors a chance to do other things. I just can't help but expect to see Dillian Hunt come bursting into the confrence room yelling for Rodi (sp). And I keep hoping to see Rigel floating around in the back ground, but no. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif |

Re: FAR-GATE and BSG
I have to admit, BSG has eveloved into a very serious and enjoyable show to watch. There is even a rumor that NBC might pick it up and run it in prime time. (Ya right and pigs fly.)
To bad there were only 13 episodes of BSG, SG1 and SGA. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif I thought we would at least get 20 each. Hell we got 20 last year for SG1 and SGA. |
Re: FAR-GATE and BSG
AT I hope your wrong about NBC picking them up. That will only sign the series death! The big networks like to dictate how things WILL BE. Remember what they did to Babylon 5's follow up series, they told M.J.S. how to run his show! I look forward to the "Legendary Commander Cain" episode next week. I see he's now a she. Formally Ensign Roe from STNG. Gotta love it!

Re: FAR-GATE and BSG
They are calling it the season finally for all three shows. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif
I have to say this final season show for SG1 was really good. I am really beginning to like the characters a lot. I enjoy seeing Braytac (sp) again, and the Tel'c (Sp) character has really evolved. I know the franchise is over eight years old now, but hell, if its that good why not keep going. The cast changes were done well and are working out fantastically. They even had Hamond in this season finally. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif. SGA is just a good show. I really have enjoyed watching it. Its still trying to find its mark, but once it does, should rock nicely. As for BSG, I honestly have to say that I feel its one of the best shows on right now. Sure its a bit cheaply done, but that just seems to be adding to the character and charm of the show. It is simply a very good show that keeps me interested and wanting more. I was flipping through channels this morning and cought STNG on Spike TV. I forgot how good that show was. Too bad they only kept it on the air for seven years. My feeling on it is simple, if the show is doing well, keep it on the air for as long as its making money and has a good following. Look at JAG, ER, The Simpsons, and so on. |
Re: FAR-GATE and BSG
AT, I dont now who told you that it was the season finally but I can assure you its just a mid season break, I forget when the rest of season airs but it will air, there are I think 20 in total in this season. If you would like I can give you a link to a page listing all the episodes which are going to air later.

Re: FAR-GATE and BSG
SciFi's website states that next friday's show is the BSG Summer finale not season finale.
Warning to Tivoers! The show will also run 2 minutes overtime! |
