Since stars will actually age over the course of a game, you'll want to explore as many galaxies as possible before their suns become supernovas and collapse, leaving the surrounding planets inhospitable and lifeless.

Interesting.

The game is scheduled for release next February.

WOOOOT! New screenies! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif
Now that combat screenshot looks impressive... especially with the FPS rating and resolution! I wonder what video card that one came from... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif
Ooh, looky, system facility modifiers are displayed in the system view! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif
Now how the heck are stars supposed to age over the course of the game? Do the Sithrak/Malfadorians/whatever cause them to age unnaturally quickly? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...s/confused.gif
Ooh, warp points are BIG in combat! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif
Hmm, the Eee are a bit... scary looking... but it's nice to know the Phong and most of our favorite races are in http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif
Radiation is millirads per YEAR? Millirads already factors in time... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...s/confused.gif
Hey, does that last screenshot suggest tactical GROUND combat??? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/eek.gif

Oh yeah, the actual article... I was too busy looking at the pretty pictures http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...ies/tongue.gif
OK, so which is it - February or Q4 2005? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...ies/tongue.gif

Nice article, even if it did confuse galaxies and solar systems http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

Aging stars? Galaxy gradually becoming a dead remnant as the game goes on? I'm a beta tester, and none of that sounds familiar...

I think the writer has shipset creation and ship design confused.

Other than that and the hex-based map, pretty much everything it says would be equally valid in a description of almost any space based 4X game.

Re: Article about SEV on Gamespot!

I agree about the mouse pointer, way too huge.
I also don't really like the system view. I'm not sure if it's just because it's so 'sideways', though. I suppose it can be rotated, moved, and zoomed as you wish? So much more orderly when it's top-down. And those flags are too big.

Not sure how I feel about publicity for the game. I've never actually experienced any game series becoming better when they got popular. More like the other way around.

Not at all. However, what scares me is when developers of a game series you like start to aim for a bigger audience, because their previous game became more popular than expected.
Now, a bigger audience *is* a bad thing for a gamer who's followed a series and has certain expectations.
The more people you make the game for, the more diverse their opinions about a game feature will be. So where as that company might have pretty much designed the previous game(s) for yourself and others like you, that could change if they decide to aim for a wider audience.

There's been a few titles that have dissapointed me that way lately, but then I barely see any good(subjective opinion of course) games released at all, anymore.

Anyways, I'm not saying that's where SEV is going. I don't believe it is, actually, because the developers have so good contact with the great community here, and the game series is still not very well-known.
I just don't like it when games become too popular.

From what I can tell, those "status reports" are more like damage reports, i.e. they show you how much damage has been done to the ship in question. For all we know, those two ships might just have been hit (almost) simultaneously, and the damage reports are growing and fading, as is the custom with certain RPG's or something if I'm not mistaken (i.e. when you hit an Orc, it shows "22" above the orc's head, which then grows and fades away).

Randallw July 31st, 2005 06:33 AM

Re: Article about SEV on Gamespot!

I note that both those ships have no shields and that they are in a storm. Cleraly it's one of those storms that removes shields. What I find interesting is that it appears that the storm disspitates at the edges. So would the storm fill up the entire map or just part of it? As for the race portraits, it's going to be hard to make shipsets with race portraits as good.

Will July 31st, 2005 08:32 AM

Re: Article about SEV on Gamespot!

Well, I don't think it's exactly clear that it's a shield-removing storm. I mean, the two ships *are* only frigates. How many frigates do you make with shields? You can tell both are frigates because it shows the design report for the red-flag one in the third screen shot, and the fourth screen shot shows the brown-and-green flag ship details on the bottom. Both clearly say "frigate" http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

Something to note, neither of those flags are from the "standard" races shown in the Quick Start screenie. The red-flag one looks like a Starfury Xiati destroyer, and the other one kinda looks like a variant of a Terran destroyer... maybe a neutral?

Randallw July 31st, 2005 08:49 AM

Re: Article about SEV on Gamespot!

Re: Article about SEV on Gamespot!

The author of the article seemed to mix up some things but the screenshots are great! I was almost about to click on the buttons on the screens, forgetting that they are screenshots.

Very nice system map with the angled hex map. It will be nice if you could change the view angle because the hexes on the far side might be hard to mee clearly. Tactical combat screen looks exciting, though I couldn't figure out what's happening with all those lines and round symbols on the screen. I like the ship design screen and the ability to place components in different locations on the ship.

The Eee look different and more evil now, but I like their new look. In the quick start screen, I guess some races show a ship and some races show the race portrait?

Big mouse cursor? Oh, that thing that looks like a spaceship! Agreed, it's too big.

Anyway, the screenshots look wonderful! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Release date is February next year? OK, I'll wait...

Presumably the cursor will be in a .bmp file like in SE4 and Starfury, so you can mod it to your heart's content http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

The "Terran" ships though... don't they remind you of the missile-boat style Human ships from MOO3?

Don't count too heavily on the projected release date, no one really knows at this stage what the release date actually will be. It may be sooner, it may be later, but it wouldn't do to get people's hopes up just to have them end up disappointed.

True that release dates are always just projected, but when did a game ever get released sooner?

So, if not next February, maybe one year from now would seem likely.

I definitely remember the description saying that they thought the Drushocka's energy draining weapons were trying to eat them. Mostly because from that point on I imagined that all Eee thought like four year olds.

EDIT:The Eee are one of the more unusual races in the galaxy. Their bodies are composed of a translucent organic matter which easily conveys and directs energy fields. Much like a giant jellyfish, the Eee are not physically strong, though they have advanced energy manipulation capabilities. They surround themselves with energy bubbles which keep their form together and allow them to move through magnetic induction. Also, due to this energy bubble, the Eee have very long lifespans.

Alright, you win.

I don't really trusted reviews and I will never trust previews. So as the only people I would trust to say anything about SE:V (the fine beta testers drawn from this board) are under an NDA I'll just wait.

The Cursor is being worked on, it's an old one that never got changed. I have made several new ones,.. Will be running them by the beta testers soon. Not to worry, prety much everything is modable.

Of course when I find/make the 'perfect' cursor, you'll have to say "I bought SE5 because I fell in love with the cursor." lol. After all, we all know a game's quinticential selling point is based on how the in game cursor looks. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...ies/tongue.gif

You guys make me laugh, but I hear what you're saying.. the current cursor sucks. lol Rest assured that it is not yet in final form.

Cool! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif
edit: comments on screenshots

WHY is it all those status reports show Shields, Armor, and Damage, not Shields, Armor, and Hull? It's so confusing that two numbers go DOWN when the ship gets hit but one goes UP... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/mad.gif

I like the Terran portrait... especially how he looks slightly Chinese... I think more 4X games should have Chinese Terrans, given that they're the most populous nation on the planet http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

Is it just my eyes or is "Drushocka" misspelled in the race description? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...ies/tongue.gif

So the map CAN be zoomed and rotated... also, it looks like there's an option to play with hidden star systems? Interesting...

AACK! Please tell me those techs being researched are theoretical... if researching "Vehicle Weapons" gives ALL the weapons in the game... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/eek.gif
