Which Shipsets Should Be Convereted to 3-D???
Being that 3-D rendering makes creating shipsets a little more difficult, what old ship sets would you like to have priotiry as far as conversions?
I can't live without the Federal Union and the Fractals. Fractals should be easy, since as per the creators discription they should be 2D anyways. |
Re: Which Shipsets Should Be Convereted to 3-D???
All of the popular ones. Converting exsiting sets to 3d is a lot of work. Remember that polygon counts have to be low so all the detail for the ships will have to be in the textures. That takes a lot of talent.

Re: Which Shipsets Should Be Convereted to 3-D???
Yeah, That is what I figured, which is why I am curious as to what the most popular ones are.
There are so many creative and trully excellant SEIV ship sets, I would really like to see some of them survive into SEV. I think the two I mentioned would be relatively easy to transfer compared to others. I am really concerned that sets like the Tylmai (sp) and other exotics will fade away. |
Re: Which Shipsets Should Be Convereted to 3-D???
I can't speak for any one other than myself. I hope to someday convert some of my sets to 3d for use with SE V. I will have to remake them all in order to do that though. (To lower the polygon counts.)
I hope to at least convert a couple of the Star Trek sets to SE V but again, the texturing hurtle is going to be a rather larger obsticle to over come. You can see my sets by visiting my site. - links in my signature. |
Re: Which Shipsets Should Be Convereted to 3-D???
Wow, I can see why you find this project to be daunting, alot of your sets would require a crazy number of polygons to reproduce faithfully.
Is polygon count a game restriction, or simply a performance concern for most computers? |
Re: Which Shipsets Should Be Convereted to 3D?
It'd be a performance issue for some computers with large fleets and such.
|
Re: Which Shipsets Should Be Convereted to 3D?
So If I have a ubermachine I could run whatever I want.
So now I just have to convince people to convert shipsets that they would never be able to use http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif Should be easy enough... |
Re: Which Shipsets Should Be Convereted to 3D?
Not really. The more polygons the more the CPU and Video card have to work. You need a lot of memory to run games that are high in polygon counts. In fact most 3d games don't have rounded edges for ships and surfaces because of the enormous load they put on CPU's and video cards.

Re: Which Shipsets Should Be Convereted to 3D?
Maybe form a waiting list of shipsets for enterprising 3d artists to claim and fill?
|
Re: Which Shipsets Should Be Convereted to 3D?
Well, for the stock races I hope they include Ukratal, Xichung and Cryslonite. They're my three favorite. As for non-stock: the Tylmai are an absolutely beautiful ship set. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Re: Which Shipsets Should Be Convereted to 3-D???
Well, my favorites are of course mine..... and..... and..... oh, the Shadri..... and of course any set by AT http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif (No, but really; the Bartelians, Shadri, Eridani, Spacesharks, and Eysk (both of them) are high on my list.)
The Bartelians (my shipset) are going to be a major pain, though; some of the larger ships have poly counts that reach into the 20k's or summin IIRC. Moreover, quite a lot of the subtle differences between certain ships would be lost, for instance the War Dreadnought's only true difference with the normal DN is the fact that the WDN has an added rear 4-barreled rapidfire turret. Like I said; PITA. (Hmmm, pittas.....) |
Re: Which Shipsets Should Be Convereted to 3-D???
Alot of ship sets with the numerous portrusions and holes and such would require major reworking I am sure. But there are many ship sets that for the most part are solid
:cough: Federal Union :cough: |
Re: Which Shipsets Should Be Convereted to 3-D???
As far as I can tell most of the stock races that I wanted to see a return of are in. I really hope that the EEE don't change to much, I like their current incarnation very much.

Re: Which Shipsets Should Be Convereted to 3-D???
United Flora has always been one of my favorites. Thats the only one not mentioned I can think of without looking at them. Don't know how hard that one would be to do though.

Re: Which Shipsets Should Be Convereted to 3-D???
I'd still like to see a Sithrak (from Starfury) shipset for SEIV.

Hmmm, I wonder if that page is supposed to be publicly viewable...

He's showed it lots of times on IRC...

Re: Which Shipsets Should Be Convereted to 3-D???
Ooops...guess I should hang out there more. My bad.

Re: Which Shipsets Should Be Convereted to 3-D???
Wow, I just watched that whole tutorial and I think that sort of work is far beyond me.
Great tutorial btw. |
Re: Which Shipsets Should Be Convereted to 3-D???
Those aren't official SE5 graphics, just ones which are made to be compatable. The textures aren't final either, so its one big WIP.
The tutorials are there to give people an idea of what is required, not everyone can afford 3DSMax, but most 3D tools use similar tools / methods. And yeup, I've been posting this on #SpaceEmpires for over a month now, its pretty public =) - Markaviam |
Re: Which Shipsets Should Be Convereted to 3-D???
Wow, excellent work on those ships and the detailed tutorial. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif
Is there a way to make the Tylmai ships semi-transparent with the glowing energy effect? |
Re: Which Shipsets Should Be Convereted to 3D?
I think the Lego shipset should be converted to 3d first - Shouldn't be too hard.
|
Re: Which Shipsets Should Be Convereted to 3-D???
Aww no one Mentioned my Icarans, Anderman, or EOM shipsets http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif (cries) anyway I don't know what kind of program I'll need to get to even create a shipset for SE:V because all I have is Doga.
I think my ships are actually pretty low polycount but I am not sure so I'll have to see. |
Re: Which Shipsets Should Be Convereted to 3-D???
Well I just spent a good 5 hours of my day tinkering with the shareware trial of 3DX MAX 7 and I can't say I got far.
Learned alot though, but I doubt I will evern be able to produce conversions that will satisfy me, let alone others. Are there any other races that have already been converted like Markavians Tylmai? Besides the stock ones we already know about of course. |
Re: Which Shipsets Should Be Convereted to 3-D???
Question,
Is there some sort of size scale to govern how big the models should be? I figure we would want the verios classes for each race to match somewhat. Would hate to spend time making models that end up being the wrong size... |
Re: Which Shipsets Should Be Convereted to 3-D???
If it's anything like Starfury, you should be able to make them any size you want and just specify a scale factor in the data files...
Or do you mean polygon count? David Gervais stated that 1500 polygons is probably pushing it... |
Re: Which Shipsets Should Be Convereted to 3-D???
Nice tutorial markavian, I just got my hands on 3Dstudio and your tutorial jumpstarted my abilities nicely. Really appreciate it.
|
Re: Which Shipsets Should Be Convereted to 3-D???
Markavians, I can't seem to get my outlines on the x, y, and z windows to show up in the perspective window, any idea why?
|
Re: Which Shipsets Should Be Convereted to 3-D???
Hah, I was just zoomed it so far I couldn't see anything, had to give the scroll buttun a goot 10 spins to get our far enough.

I hope they add a few more specialty classes in, like how the transports and carriers have their own graphics and requirements to use the hull. A Planetary Assault ship would be a good one. |
