OT: Great Music

It's been a while, so lets have another thread on music! Here's a few of my favorite bands:

- Our Lady Peace (awesome!)
- Slipknot (good if you like heavy metal type music)
- Disturbed (again good if you like heavy metal)
- Collective Soul (great lightish rock band)
- Elvis Presley (a classic)
- Foo Fighters (good band)
- Matchbox 20 (I'm running out of things to write about the bands)
- Metallica (Their older stuff was good)
- Mudvayne (Up and coming hard rock band)
- Offspring (The second time I ran out of things to say)
- Papa Roach (So I'll just list them now)
- Finger Eleven (If that's ok with you)
- System of a Down (And even if it isn't)

What are some of your favorite bands?

Re: OT: Great Music

System of a Down really gets on my nerves when I listen to them. Don't know why.

I definitely agree that Metallica's older stuff was good. The newer stuff... meh.

I've been going on an old rock binge lately: Zeppelin, Clapton, Hendrix, Pink Floyd, Credence Clearwater Revival, Iron Maiden (not really rock), to name a few. Modern music tends to be so... corporate and soul-less. It's pretty funny: my father will mention a band he liked as a kid, I will check it out, and there is a good chance I will like it too. Too bad he is starting to get into Country music these days... blech.

Corporate and soulless? Uh oh...Fyron's been bitten by the "Hate society, gov't, capitalism; anarchy rules!" bug http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...ies/tongue.gif Just kidding, of course.

I would agree that Metallica's new stuff sucks badly. And so does country *shudder*

Country Music eh? Trully a sign of Apocalypse http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

My personal favourites are Paradise Lost, Muse, Garbage, The Smiths, Apocalyptica, Seigmen, Beborn Beton and The Crüxshadows.

Although to be honest at the moment I've been listening to a lot more film soundtracks. Sean Callery's soundtrack to the tv show "24", Graeme Revell and Hans Zimmer are rarely off my playlist. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...es/biggrin.gif

Re: OT: Great Music

Yeah, the 'classic' rock of the 1960s and 1970s is still good. The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and The Who are the triad tied for 'greatest rock band of all time' and then you've got other interesting but slightly less famous/influential bands like Jefferson Airplane/Starship, and Crosby, Stills, Nash & (sometimess) Young, or the Moody Blues. I think some of Zeppelin is good but they're not this 'fantastic' band that so many people seem to think they are. Some of the bands from the 1980s are pretty good but most of them turn out to have gotten started in the 1970s -- Genesis, The Talking Heads, Super Tramp, etc. (Hmm I guess Super Tramp was already famous inthe 1970s... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif ) U2 was around in the early 1980s, and I think their first few albums are actually their best. The 1990s and later are not looking so good. I wonder if the stuff being crapped out now will be considered 'good' in 30 or 40 years.

Besides the 'classic rock' field, though, I've become interested in various 'alternative' genres. But today the genres are so narrow that you'll usually only find a few bands that you like in any one category. Some of the so-called 'techno' bands are quite good. Delerium, for example. But lots of it is just boring noise. Same for 'New Age' music. Some of these artists are good, some of them are just useless and smarmy at the same time. Yes was much better 'New Age' music in its time. Too bad they've corroded so badly over the years. Can't stand any of their new stuff. (King Crimson, Pink Floyd, Yes, Alan Parsons Project and such stuff used to be called 'Art Rock' before all the sub-genres appeared.)

Britney Spears? Chistina Aguilara? The entire boy band phenomena? Blink 182? Note that not every bad modern "band" is corporate, but most make music that lacks soul. Dry, riveting stuff that causes physical damage to the brain upon hearing it.

I like putting all of my music in one playlist, setting it to shuffle, and getting my own personal radio station.

Yeah being that "hit that" is in reference to sex not abuse (unless we go to sexual abuse but we won't here).

Although to be honest she always had a squeaky irritating voice and the only reason my 14 year old "brain" (yeah let's say brain) liked her was her body heh. But as I got older alas I met real girls who had much nicer qualities (both physically and certainly otherwise) then that skank and I thank God recovered from my brief bout of britneysbodyidus

Now Agulara (sp?) has a good voice but she's just as much of a skank as Spears (spears get it lol) just she admitted it from the start while miss "I'm a virgin" didn't until recently.

Most of that stuff came out before I was born? lol at least I think that's the pattern I noticed as those bands are all what late 70s early 80s http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Re: OT: Great Music

Not even close, but I'll give you The Cure as late 80s. Johnny Cash had a huge career, but as I've got American IV that was 2002. Rest are all 90s or 00s.

I'll grant you that, those bands quoted quite simply are soulless and suck.

"Stricken" by Disturbed. An awesome song.

Re: OT: Great Music

Not many "new" bands impress me nowdays, I like a few, I call them candy bands. Not really good or good for you, it's pop sugar and i like it. In this caragory I put Franz Ferdinan(sp) The Bravery, The White Stripes, Newer greenday and Foo Fighters.

Also I'm on a less is more trend, with duos like the white stripes, death from above 1979, The Black Keys, and Yeah Yeah Yeahs(technically 3 people, guitar/synth, voice and drummer). Though the latter bands are far far superior to the white stripes, and each sounds very different from the other.

I have a CD player that holds 60 cds at once, 4 bands have been in that thing as long as ive had it and have never left, REM, Blue oyster cult, The Doors, and the Smashing Pumpkins, those are my favorites(though not in that particular order).

Starhawk writes: But as I got older alas I met real girls who had much nicer qualities (both physically and certainly otherwise) then that skank and I thank God recovered from my brief bout of britneysbodyidus

Personally I don't see anything wrong with admiring from afar superficially attractive celebrities, whatever their real-life shortcomings. Taking Britney as an example, since I don't know her personally she's just a pretty, um, face that I can "flesh out" any way I want in my imagination. "Imaginary" Britney then becomes a thoroughly decent human being, Mensa member, philanthropist, Red Cross volunteer, virgin, and nymphomaniac who is inexplicably attracted to older men with thinning hair, no talent, and excruciatingly ordinary lives. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif In real life she may be a crack whore who kicks dogs for fun, but who cares? Real life is somebody else's problem.

Celebrities have another advantage in that one can choose to admire them in their prime. Denise Richards is currently a bit past her sell-by date, but if I hit the Internet (gives new meaning to the phrase "hit me baby one more time") or Netflix I can recapture her glory days any time I want.

A few words of caution: (1) Don't expect real people to live up to your imagination; (2) Never, ever use your imagination to "flesh out" a potential RL romantic interest. If you're wrong, YOU are stuck with the "problem". http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/eek.gif

Clart.

I finally got round to buying a Pronghorn CD recently. THey are truly amazing - anyone in the UK should make an effort to see them live.

Also planning to exchange my birthday gift vouchers for the Kasabian album, and possibly that one by The Streets.

My playlist (around 3000 tracks, last count, a good 10% of those being full music videos) includes a lot of Jamiroquai, Cake, Dido, Prodigy, Snuff, Offspring, Moby, Leftfield, and a whole bunch of other stuff besides.

Player of choice is Media Jukebox- handles just about any sound/ video format flawlessly and has some great playlist manipulation features.
