Your Dom2 quiz question for today
In the red corner - 70 vans with F4W4S4N4D4B4 blessing
In the blue corner - 50 white centaurs with E9N9 blessing ... so, which side wins? If that's too easy, by what ratio does the winning side win? ie. how many troops does the enemy lose per loss by the winning side? I'm asking because the result absolutely flabbergasted me, it was twice as bad as I expected ... CC |

I am putting my money on the Centaurs, given that their blessing is a lot more effective, and they should deal a lot more damage than the Vans (no Flaming Weapon hurts them). So... 20 centaurs killed, to pull a number out of my hat.

That gay white centaurs have not enough attack skill(not even with berseker rage, i think) so i put my money on the vans.

I forgot that the centaurs already start with +3 Berserker Rage: So i think they will win with 5 dead centaurs after the fight(protection 23, if i am right) and that the white centaurs win.

The centaurs will absolutely dominate the vans.
They won´t tire and a van hoof attack will only do about 5 damage to a centaur, the spear attack has no chance of going through the armor.The centaur almost regenerates that amount. Eventually the vans will succumb to fatigue. So maybe 10 dead white centaurs. |

Yeah, I just tried it out, and the Centaurs ended up with exactly *two* losses... and I thought 20 losses was already pretty optimistic.

I'd like to introduce myself as the 'blue corner' http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif The actual losses were 18 centaurs, and 72 vans... However, watching the battle, most of the centaurs died from his Arch Devil SC. This being my 3rd Dominions 2 game, I am pretty proud in my centaurs doing so well in my first battle against Magnate... Now does anyone have any tips on fighting his Ice Devils & Arch Devils? Are Bane lords comparible SCs to fight with? GrayZ (Sorry for highjacking your thread a bit Magnate...) |

Centaurs vs Vans : both beasties look relatively alike, in this setup I suppose the centaur domination was mainly due to the much better centaurs'Bless effect.
I've found E9 blessed Vans to be pretty good, and can't see another reason to their utter defeat.. As for fighting SC AD/ID, best bet is to either have some yourself, or some Elem Queenie. BL are clearly inferior, but maybe with top equipment and superior number they can kill one AD/ID. |

for a sc killed try something with winged shoes + gate cleaver+(if it can regenerate ) lycan amulet and if it cant then just boost its def and if needed attack and if his troops have low morale you could add a horror helmet or something like that

Who said anything about a fair fight? It's true that I didn't mention the Arch Devil, and I think GrayZ's right, most of the 18 dead centaurs were the AD, and he might have won the battle if the vans' commander hadn't died.
I also didn't mention the three pans, two shamen, illusionist, hydromancer, medusa and sundry other mages who did quite a good job tying up some of the vans ... So it wasn't quite as clear a contest as I made out, but I was pretty stunned how much better the E9N9 centaurs were than the multi-blessed vans, even without the mages' help. Now, GrayZ, go start your own thread about how to deal with SCs - or read old ones, there are tons on here. One tip someone gave me is that google is actually better at searching this board than the in-built Search function ... CC |

P.S. Griffin - the berserk E9N9 centaurs only have 19 prot, because the +6 from the berserk does not stack arithmetically with their existing 15 protection - you have to use that formula which separates natural prot from armour prot.

Vans, like the white centaurs, have high defense and are sacred, but have rather weak attack. Both are very good units when used with high-magic pretender, either playing on their strengths (defense -> high water) or giving them real damaging power (fire 9, or nature 9 for centaurs as they start with berserk)

48 Centaurs with E9N9 versus 65 Vans with F9W9, the Vans spanked the Centaurs, 48 to 19. The centaurs are tough and heavy hitters, but the vans cut them to pieces nonetheless.

In the current 2 vs 2 vs 2 vs 2 vs 2 game, Turin has E9N9 Pangaea and I have E9W9 Tien Chi Spring and Autumn. :-)
So what's better -- E9N9 White Centaurs or E9W9 Demons of Heavenly Rivers? Answer so far: it depends on the support troops. In one battle my forces destroyed dozens of White Centaurs by a combination of Demons of Heavenly Rivers, Dispossessed Spirits, and Demons of Heavenly Fires. In another important battle Turin broke out of his besieged capitol and destroyed my major army in part because his Harpies killed all of my death mages, neutralizing the Dispossessed Spirits. That's something I like about Dominions 2 -- battles are often determined by the interactions of different units and tactics instead of the bigger/stronger army always winning. |

The F9 makes also flamming (AP) weapons so the prot 19 is not more a match... and with a attack skill of 14(instead of 10) they hit quite often.

The Major Blessing of Fire is confusing. I *think* what it does is:
For each weapon in certain slots (your melee weapons such as swords included, hooves and bites of your mount excluded, not sure about lances), whenever you hit with that weapon then it does an extra, separate, 8-point armor piercing hit. Strength is not added. Your weapon is considered magical. If that's true, then it has a fine chance of damaging Prot-15 centaurs -- they get either 7 or 8 prot after the armor-penetration, and the +2dOE-2dOE could easily stack up some damage. |

Doh. Yes of course, I had forgotten about the 2d6OE added to the 8AP damage. My bad. Looks like I should have gone for F9W9 on my pretender then ... but, er, then he wouldn't have been a rainbow mage. Never mind.
