Has Anyone Ever Lost to the AI Before?
ok, I've read all the guides, strategies, and what not... enough material that it took me 2 weeks to read it all.
In my first game ever of SEIV, I'm playing against 20 AI, max difficulty, low bonus to AI. unmodded 1.91 except 255 systems and 20000 units. At turn 20 I've colonized 1/8 of the galaxy. I'm researching warp closers first and demanding gifts from my weaker trade allies to assimilate their tech. I've also demanded their planets in systems I've claimed so I can fully own the systems and not go to war with them. I also demand each and every ship I see entering my territory as a gift, (after of course the AI offers trade treaty). I've got rock and gas techs, and O2, H, and CO2 breathers as a result. At turn 30, my tech also includes the combined total of all tech from known aliens (man those weaklings are guillable). At turn 46 I'm 365k and in first place. Second place AI is 111k. I've also created my first planet out of a tiny asteroid field. Also my monolith IIIs have started kicking in. Before I hit MEE, I expect to close all my warp points, get max tech, maximize my internal development, and then reopen a warp point to attack the galaxy with a vengence, one wormhole at a time. For honor's sake, I'll let the AI declare war on me first and fire the first shot. If I hit MEE before my warp closers finish building in 10 turns, I've got enough double Warhead III mines at every warp point to send the AI retreating to their research centers to learn minesweeping V. After I eat the AI alive in this game, I fully expect to take on modded AIs for a greater game experience. I just wonder, has anyone ever lost to the AI before? I can't wait to get my life settled enough to start playing humans... and so start playing with some evil human vs human strategies. |
Re: Has Anyone Ever Lost to the AI Before?
Yep, I've lost to the AI before, several times. Now to qualify that, I can't remember losing to the stock AI's before. TDM AI's are a totally different story. Much more difficult. Also, since I always play with a high AI bonus, that makes it a LOT more difficult too.

Re: Has Anyone Ever Lost to the AI Before?
I remember that PvK lost to the AI once during beta testing. He was started in the same system with the EEE and they were quite a problem. Eventually he told us that they'd finished him off. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif When the game is very early (and therefore simple) the AI is apparently pretty nasty.

I posted in the list http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...ies/tongue.gif a few times actually http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif
And hey we can all lose battles and sometimes it only takes one big loss to get your hole empire's butt handed to it. |
Re: Has Anyone Ever Lost to the AI Before?
Yes, I have lost to the A.I. many times, especially the Tessellates on high bonus.
|
Re: Has Anyone Ever Lost to the AI Before?
It's probably easier for you because you're using 'exploits' to take advantage of the AI. Try the TDM Modpack where the AIs won't trade with you (usually), nor will they be willing to offer you any sort of friendly treaty. Lastly, use simultaneous combat. That should be somewhat tougher, even with just low bonus.

Re: Has Anyone Ever Lost to the AI Before?
Inigma try the "team mode".
Even after the MEE event the different AI empires will still fight between each other. That will be different if you select the team mode in the game setup. And yes, I have lost against the AI this way. |
Re: Has Anyone Ever Lost to the AI Before?
Yes, I actually lost to the stock AI twice, once in PBEM where they had a high bonus, and another time when the AI started very near my homeworld and attacked right away. If they start out close to you and they have a bonus, they can be overpowering. If you have time to get ahead of them on colonization in the unmodded game, that can give you more production and research than their bonus can compensate for.

Re: Has Anyone Ever Lost to the AI Before?
I lost to the AI in my mod once. I tried to threaten one of them and it sort of backfired..only time I've EVER seen the AI respond to the "tone" setting of messages.

Re: Has Anyone Ever Lost to the AI Before?
Well I've oddly enough never been able to finish a long game of SEIV because things kept getting in the way like comp crashes or things getting fowled up in the data files.
I did lose to the AI once when my main star went Nova early in game and all I had was a few scattered colonies and warships, and the two AI powers on either side of me invaded and slaughtered my defence fleets and colonies, But it took them three years and I made them pay in blood and steel for every inch of space! But in the end even my superior ship sizes (I had battleships they had battlecruisers) was not enough and even with a two to one kill rate and me slaughtering entire fleets they still overwhelmed me. The Cue Cappa did the main damage because they actually stole two of my battleships with their psychic abilities and defeated one of two western fleets, my other western fleet had three battleships and I think a mix of 10 cruisers, BCs and destroyers. And against a Cue fleet reinforced by my own battleships it was the end of them a year later. The Xiati only really served to whittle away my defenses in the east with several warp point battles that eventually led to the destruction of my eastern frontier fleets. |
Re: Has Anyone Ever Lost to the AI Before?
Ah yes, I remember fighting the Cue Cappa long ago when I still played single player. It was quite fun, going into battle outnumbered 5 to 1 and coming out with 6 times as many ships as I started with. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/evil.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/cool.gif

Re: Has Anyone Ever Lost to the AI Before?
Yeah it's funny after fighting them, even in games where there are no psychic races I have it engraved on my soul to BUILD IN MASTER COMPUTERS lol, I still have crew because I've read about what happens to all MC fleets when someone employs virus warfare.
Someone once joked that it was much like what happened to the Colonial fleet in the NeoBSG mini-series lol |
Re: Has Anyone Ever Lost to the AI Before?
I'm getting a run for my money in a current game against 5 AIs:
Stock SEIV gold + TDM Modpack 2000 points I took no racial tech areas (crystalline, religious, etc.) Team play Expensive tech Low AI bonus No mine tech AIs are 5 of the top 6 from AI Deathmatch 3 My Intel is at minimum No Ruins Strategic combat I attempt no diplomacy beyond "Surrender, creeps!" It takes some gymnastics, but I think it's possible to get a good game against the AIs. |
Re: Has Anyone Ever Lost to the AI Before?
I lost to the AI a lot when learning to play. If I ran into the Terrans or Sergetti within 10 or 15 turns of start, on a stock Gold game, I lost.

Re: Has Anyone Ever Lost to the AI Before?
I have never beat the AI does that count as loosing?
..and I have never won against 'real players' either, does that count as loosing? I can win if I play with no computer players or neutral players. At the start of those games it says "You Win, do you want to continue?" hmmm, does that count as a win? Yes I AM that bad. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...ies/tongue.gif Cheers! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif |

Re: Has Anyone Ever Lost to the AI Before?
I only play TDM mod pack AI with the highest bonus'. Yes, I've lost. I've had games where those *bleep* Space Vikings were sending wave after wave of fleets to overwhelm my minefields. Once the minefields were gone, my empire fell quickly.... Lost at one game or another to most TDM mod pack AI, but I'd say the Space Vikings are the nastiest...
I recommend the highest AI bonus' for a challenging game. |
Re: Has Anyone Ever Lost to the AI Before?
I lose to the AI, but mainly because I fail to keep track of stuff after a while http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...ies/tongue.gif

Re: Has Anyone Ever Lost to the AI Before?
Sure, I lost to the AI in the beginning. I lost several games of SE III while trying to figure out what the heck was going on. I also lost to the Jraenar the first time I encountered them. It was very early in the game, and as PvK said above, some races can be pretty nasty when they have an early advantage and show up nearby.
This is something human players also like to do to newbies, and even not-so-newbies. |
Re: Has Anyone Ever Lost to the AI Before?
I have lost to the AI. I do not know if I still lose to the SEIV stock AI. I have added too many created races to my game and usually use the random feature to add opponents to the game. I usually do not choose settings which tend to make my race have "super being qualities". I try to have a modest race with specific skills. I have lost on occasion to some specially made races. Usually this occurs with very aggressive, advanced races that happen to be really close to where my home systems are. With this being said. I still do not think I'm a very good player. I tend to find some of the AI opponents challenging. I suppose beating the AI all depends on my skill level, how I have set up the game, and what races are playing as my opponents.
