Can't take the skies from me!

I saw it. If you haven't seen the Firefly DVDs, then it is a pretty good space action adventure. If you have seen the DVDs and understand some of the show's background it is a great movie. If you like Firefly, it is AWESOME (except for maybe one thing, but no spoilers from me http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

You see, there is this..... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

Took off from work today @ noon and went to AMC 24 to see it. Wrote this to several friends later today:

Well, as a prejudiced Serenity/Firefly fan, I can give it two thumbs up and say I enjoyed it more than the Star Wars movies I’ve seen.

It has a good deal of action and when the action has quieted down, there’s pretty tense drama as a replacement. All the characters are true to form and background from the series carried over. Not sure how well the movie works for those who never saw the Firefly series as it’s difficult to say if they were left with questions or not since, as a series viewer, I had more history to flesh things out with. The movie should surprise you in a few places. And there are more one-liners that get audience chuckles than we are used to seeing in Arnold movies…but that’s true to the Firefly series of what I call, “a serious crew but with a sense of humor”. As a fairly devout supporter of the effort, I’d have to say a few emotions swelled up on me as I really appreciated various parts of the movie and was glad to see how well they were carried out. And like any good book, sad that the move had come to an end knowing if there is a sequel, it will be a long way off. Oh, and as homage to all the support of the fans, you’ll see/hear reference to “Can’t stop the signal” (which is/was the byline of a lot of the different groups of supporters) more than once.

Theatre was over half full…not bad for that time of day.

You should enjoy the movie.

Actually I thought that some of the character performances were a bit flat, and that that about 2/3rds into the film, the plot kinda died with the whole save the universe thing...But considering this is probably 6 months to a year after the end of the series, and it seems they have been on hard times with money and jobs and such, it might explain alot of how they were feeling/acting...I think the series was better, and the movie tried to capture as much of that as it could in spots, but really didn't get all of what I loved in the series...Good film despite all of that.

I thought it was pretty good... Some great special effects (the space fleet battle was really nice), but the rest seemed rather moderate quality. Good Character development with the captain and some primary crew (and the girl), but others were practically written out. I guess it is hard to compete with the gold standards of Star Wars / Star Trek, or dare I say Battlestar Galactica (the TV series)...

Re: Any One Going To Go See Serenity?

This series pioneered a lot of what you now see in BSG and even in the last Star Wars movie. The movie was a lot darker than the series and given the fact that it was dramatically cut down for $$ and time sake, I think they pulled it off brillantly.

By far its one of the best Sci-Fi movies I have seen in a good long time not counting ROTS.

I would give it a 7 out of 10.

Didn't the way they ended it seem to you that the producers were not intending any future for a continued TV presence? It seemed to me that the ending was done in such a way that it said "OK fans, now just sut up about another TV series."

Re: Any One Going To Go See Serenity?

I have heard a RUMOR about there being at least two sequels planned. This came from the captain of a Browncoat ship, so I would expect it to be either true or crash commercialism trying to get us to see it one more time.

I also remember in the DVD extras where Joss was talking about the number of characters that he needs to do a TV series and of how many are needed to do a movie. I need to watch it again to be sure of it, but did not he give some numbers and stuff? What, someone dies???

Good news... While I was manning a table of space literature outside of the new 3-D IMAX movie Magnificent Desolation, I heard from the movie manager that he had thought that Serenity would be a "flash in the pan" movie, where this week and gone the next. But that attendance stronger than any other movies opening including the Golf movie he had thought would be tops.

There won't be any sequals. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif Weekend box office revenue was so far under projections that the movie is going to be pulled within a couple of weeks. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif This is so damned depressing.

Total US Gross $10,100,000 after this weekend. They forecasted at least twice that. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif

So if your going to go see it, better get hopping. It really is a must see on the big screen as opposed to the small screen TV.

Serenity
Good space opera packs payload

Release Date: 2005

Ebert Rating: ***

BY ROGER EBERT / Sep 30, 2005

The thrill of a fistfight in a movie was altered for me forever the day I visited a set and watched the sound men beating the hell out of a Naugahyde sofa with Ping-Pong paddles. There is a moment in "Serenity" when I remembered that moment -- no, not during a fistfight, but during a battle in interplanetary space. There are so many spacecraft, so large, so close together, it looks as if collision is a greater danger than enemy fire. Imagine spaceships in a demo derby.

As the battle continued and the heroes were hurled about inside their own spaceship, which at times looked curiously like the interior of a loading dock, I made a note: "More banging than in your average space movie." Then something shifted inside my ears and I somehow knew I was hearing sound men, pounding the hell out of garbage-can lids, sheets of steel and big piles of pots and pans.

I say this not with disapproval, but with affection. "Serenity" is an old-fashioned space opera, and differs from a horse opera mostly in that it involves space, not horses. It takes place in a solar system of a dozen terraformed planets and "hundreds of moons," and there is a war going on between the Alliance, which runs things and wants everybody to be happy, and a group of rebels who begin to make disturbing discoveries. As the film opens, a psychic named River Tam (Summer Glau) is rescued from Alliance mind-washers by her brother Simon (Sean Maher), and then we learn that River was unwisely exhibited to a roomful of important Alliance parliamentarians. Because she can read minds, she knows their secrets.

River and Simon are soon enough allied with a team of free-lance smugglers on a banged-up old ship named Serenity. Malcolm (Nathan Fillion) is the captain, and his crew includes the pilot Wash (Alan Tudyk), his wife, Zoe (Gina Torres), the engineer Kaylee (Jewel Staite) and the tough guy Jayne (Adam Baldwin). On their trail is the most competent and feared of the Alliance's agents, The Operative (Chiwetel Ejiofor).

Science fiction fans will recognize the plot line and most of the characters from a short-lived Fox series named "Firefly," which (I learn in a letter from Stephen McNeil of Sydney, Nova Scotia), was canceled in mid-season, but not before the episodes were carelessly shown out of proper order. What a crock, especially considering that Joss Whedon, the TV series author (and writer-director of "Serenity") earlier created "Buffy, the Vampire Slayer," and so deserved the benefit of the doubt.

"Serenity" is made of dubious but energetic special effects, breathless velocity, much imagination, some sly verbal wit and a little political satire. Turns out the Alliance was simply trying to bring contentment to its crowded planetary system, by distracting them from their problems and making them feel like they had a life. River is in possession of a secret about this process that the Alliance would do anything to suppress. Like Brave New World and 1984, the movie plays like a critique of contemporary society, with the Alliance as Big Brother, enemy of discontent. But as River observes, "Some people don't like to be meddled with."

Some of the dialogue sounds futuristic, some sounds 19th-century, and some sounds deliberately kooky. (Captain Mal: "Do you want to run this ship?" Discontented crew member: "Yes." Mal: "Well, you can't"). There are also unanticipated scenes of real impact, including a planet where -- but see for yourself. I'm not sure the movie would have much appeal for non-sci-fi fans, but it has the rough edges and brawny energy of a good yarn, and it was made by and for people who can't get enough of this stuff. You know who you are.

Cast & Credits

Capt. "Mal" Reynolds: Nathan Fillion
Zoe Warren: Gina Torres
Hoban "Wash" Washburn: Alan Tudyk
Jayne: Adam Baldwin
Kaylee: Jewel Staite

Universal presents a film written and directed by Joss Whedon. Running time: 119 minutes. Rated PG-13 (for sequences of intense violence and action, and some sexual references).

Saw it Sunday and enjoyed it, but was let down a little after I saw reviews comparing it to the original Star Wars by people who should know better. 8 1/2 out of 10 here, going again tonight with a couple of different friends than Sunday, and hoping to convince others to go later this week.

EDIT: In addition, the Narnia preview looked like the second coming of LTR, I have marked Dec. 9 as an important date.

I don't think 150$ million is the break even point... probably closer 50$ M... it's not exactly a "big budget" picture.

150m is 3 x the production budge of 50m which is the break even point for most movies.

Why does that sound too much like Farscape? The whole 'people are stuck on a starship running from stuff' plot, with someone trying to shoot them down/kill them/torture them...

By the way, Sci-Fi is showing a 'new' series called Firefly, with pretty graphical effects. Wonder if the two are related...

Yes, they are related...Serenity is based off of Firefly; same actors, etc... They made Serenity basically because the fans got mad at them for ending the Firefly series on TV.

I have to agree with Atrocities -- it is much better the second time around. Raise my score to a 9 1/2 out of 10. Lord of War didn't interest me either, although Into the Blue might -- the thought of Jessica Alba in a bikini brings a goofy smile to my face for some reason.

I think your not following the concept Null. This show IS nothing like Farscape. In fact they are so vastly differant that to compare them would be like comparing Little House On The Prairy to Star Wars.

Firefly was a FOX series back in 2000 I believe. It was cancelled after only 13 episodes, which is something that FOX is well known for.

I saw the movie twice and it was great each time. It had my wife cussing at one or two points. Both of us are Serenity fans and watched the series. I will be seing it a third time if I can help it. the only thing I did not like was they had to rush everything. I would have liked to have seen the first episode on the big screen followed by the movie.

I found it bizarre that there was Chinese writing all over everything, but there were no Asians anywhere in the movie... Maybe the odd one in a big crowd, but that was it.

It was a descent movie. The acting was iffy at times, and the plot was often predictable, but overall it was not bad.

Going to the theater yesterday reminded me why I do not go to the movie theaters anymore... Yay for paying $7.50 (for a matinee!) to be bombarded with ads that tell me to come even earlier so I won't miss the ads they just told me I missed! And they say file trading is why movie ticket sales are down... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...s/rolleyes.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...s/rolleyes.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...s/rolleyes.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...s/rolleyes.gif

I can't remember why it is (without loading up my DVD of Firefly) but Joss explained why he wanted some "bastardized" version of Chinese as some sort of "throwback" language the characters used when upset or frustrated. It seemed to make sense (but I forgot what it was).

As to acting, I think Nathan did a good job. Everyone else seemed adequate except for Summer's performace which I found to be in-character quite well.

Even seeing it the second time at the theatre (to help with weekend sales), I found myself on the edge of my seat quite a bit (though I knew what was going to happen).

The Companion looked kind of Asian to me, but I am *very* poor in the "look at someone and figure out something (age, origin...)" department.

Other than that, it is a matter of politics I think: there is an Anglo-Chinese alliance, so it seems natural that some Chinese phrases would become widely used in English (I cannot speak about the movie, but I know there are more than a few such phrases in the series).

Ya, if you ask a 1000 people why they no longer go to the movies they will all tell you its because of the Ads, the cost, and the hassel.

They would rather stay home and buy the movie on DVD or rent it rather than pay $50.00 to sit in a crowded theater with a bunch of people who won't shut the hell up, are often sick, and get up and walk in front of you every five minutes when they can sit in the comfort of their own homes, eat microwaved popcorn and watch the movie on their new 52" plasma big screen.

Hollywood likes to cry foul and blame the lack luster box office sales on piracy but in truth its the adds, the theater costs for treats, the hassels, and the tick prices that have turned people to the lower cost of DVD's and jiffy pop pop corn.

Amen to that, Atro!

When I go, it's really my wife and me, so that's $16.00 just for tickets! And these days, GAS to get there.

Heck, we usually wait for the DVD and buy it, lay on our bed and watch the movie in our bedroom on our 56 inch Sony where the sound is driven by a Yamaha digital amp to a Bose surround sound system. Only went to see Serenity to help with box office totals.

Amen brother http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

I hate the captivity of the theater
I'm paying them to show me Ads?!?!
I'm paying them $4.00 for a tub of popcorn I could make at home for $0.25??!!?
I'm not even guaranteed that the ******** behind me won't start talking on his cell phone??!?
I have a nice big tv at home, so the only advantage of the movie theater for me is the sound system, and once I save $400 more I'll be able to buy a better surround sound system and that won't even be true.

I only rarely go see movies, and that is mostly for movies like Serenity where I want to encourage Hollywood for making it.
