Server Down?
Hiro, i seem to be encountering the same error i was getting during testing, i try to login to the lobby, and i get an error saying either the server is down or theres a problem with my internet connection, which i know there isnt.
|
Re: Server Down?
Hmm, it does look to be down.. I hope I still got my XP for the game just played.. :/
EDIT: ah, seems to be ok now. |
Re: Server Down?
But I didn't get me XP (8), aagh! Wombat should have gone up by 4, also.
|
Re: Server Down?
I'm sorry you guys didn't get your xp, but if the server crashed before it had a chance to report it, it might end up being a casualty of it.
We're removing the restricted-race-by-level feature with the v1.10 patch, so the XP loss shouldn't actually affect you too much. Andre and I will look at the server logs and try to patch the problem ASAP. The nice things about server problems is that they should be server-fixes only, requiring no client patch. -Hiro_Antagonist |
Re: Server Down?
@Sammas/CombatWombat: From what I can tell, the server crashed right at the end of your 2nd game, when CombatWombat presumably logged off. Did either of you see any strange behavior at the end of that game, or did you do anything out of the ordinary? CombatWombat: How did you leave the game? Did you press the red X? Did you concede? We were able to look at the logs and norrow it down a bit, but we weren't able to get a crash report from the servers and the logs we have only tell us so much.
I'm in the process now of adding some new server debugging mechanisms to help us. @Nightstalker: Have you ever been able to successfully connect? I'm not sure we were able to figure out your problem before, because there's not much data to go on. (All we knew is that you couldn't connect...) That said, there *was* a server crash around the time you posted (within 15 minutes), so that may have been it. -Hiro_Antagonist |
Re: Server Down?
Just said Wombat disconnected in game, waiting 2 minutes for reconnect. Timed out and it went to the end game screen. Then when I clicked continue, it couldn't connect to the lobby.
|
Re: Server Down?
Ah, interesting. that helps. i'm not sure I tested that exact scenario... I'll try that now.
I did test a bunch of similar scenarios and couldn't reproduce the crash. I hope that exact repro case does the trick. *crosses fingers* -Hiro_Antagonist |
Re: Server Down?
im thinkin its something to do with my router, ill disconnect it tomorrow and see if it works
|
Re: Server Down?
ok, cool. Also, if you don't mind, post here right after you try to connect. That way I can look at the server logs to see if anything interesting happened on the server at the time you connected...
I want to figure this out so that you can play online! =) -Hiro_Antagonist |
Re: Server Down?
Sorry I didn't respond before now, I was in a bit of a hurry to get packed I was running alittle late but I am back now. I was running the game in windowed mode and I just hit the x in the upper right corner to close it.
|
Re: Server Down?
i disconnected my router and tried to just connect with a straight connection from the modem, even that didnt solve the problem, at this point i have run out of ideas as to what might cause this to be happening, i go online fine with every other game i own.
|
Re: Server Down?
Are you connecting through a firewall proxy? That usually causes issues.
|
Re: Server Down?
no firewall or anything that would normally cause an issue
|
Re: Server Down?
You don't have XP SP2 installed do you?
|
Re: Server Down?
yes i do
|
Re: Server Down?
SP2 puts a firewall up by default, it also is infamous for causing issues with some games.
However that might not be it, so I will let Scott help you out from here http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif |
Re: Server Down?
nope, i have no kind of firewall up of any sort, i have tried everything in power to troubleshoot why this is happening, its been happening since one of the early betas, before a certain version it was working fine

Re: Server Down?
I have a theory about this. It may be that the Shrapnel server hosting our Lobby server is requiring all connections to have a hostname associated with the IP address that is trying to connect. I noticed that the IP address that NightStalker is using does not have a hostname. Again, I'm not sure this is actually the problem, but it I've seen this type of behavior from servers before now that I think about it.
I've contacted a couple other users that have IP addresses w/ no associated hostname, and have not played an online game of LOL v1.0, and I hope to hear back that they can confirm the issue for themselves or disprove the theory by connecting (assuming they connect from the same IP as when they signed up). It's kind of a longshot. NightStalker, is it possible for you to try connecting from a computer that actually has a hostname for itself? You can test this by running "ipconfig" and grabbing your IP address for the ethernet adapter in the report, then run "nslookup [YOUR_IPADDRESS]" to see if there's an associated hostname for your IP. If it does have a name for that IP, then I'm guessing you could connect from that computer. The reason it may have worked before is that you were connecting to the server that was running on our DEV box back in the day, and not the new Shrapnel server that v1.0 is running on. This new server may be enforcing this hostname rule on a level above our application. I'm assuming you have the same internet connection/provider now that you did a few months back during the BETA when you could connect. |
Re: Server Down?
Andre,
How does your app talk to clients? Is it going through IIS? Is it a straight TCP/IP connection? We can easily change whatever configuration may be preventing this. Windows 2003 is also pretty anal on certain security things. |
Re: Server Down?
We're using DirectPlay, which I believe in turn uses straight TCP/IP.
If you're right, Andre, that's the find of a century, and I owe you a big beer. =) -Hiro_Antagonist |
Re: Server Down?
The servers use TCP/IP for connecting sending all messages. They use DirectX's DirectPlay API, and I don't remember seeing anything in DirectPlay that would cause this rule to be enforced.
I don't know which configuration setting in Windows 2003 Server this would be in, but it may also be some type of firewall setting. I'm not able to connect to the Shrapnel server right now, but I can get the port numbers for the Lobby and Game server if you need. Right now I get the user limit exceeded error when I try to login via Remote Desktop. |
Re: Server Down?
Yep I was in checking something out, I am out now. Check it out and let me know. Drop me an email before you change anything though.
Good find Andre! |
Re: Server Down?
No luck. What's strange is I can ping his IP address, and it does actually have a hostname, but I can't complete a traceroute on it, which may be more of the actual problem.
It stops after hitting the cv.net network: dstswr1-ge3-1.rh.bbylny.cv.net [167.206.33.130] And it should at some point get to optonline.net to get to here: ool-18bbe065.dyn.optonline.net [24.187.224.101] So maybe there's some sort of firewall outside of his LAN that he has no control over. Whatever the reason, it seems to be outside the scope of Shrapnel's box. I imagine that there's port filtering or a proxy there where the problem is. It needs to allow the ports that LOL uses: 1337 (Lobby Server), 21337 (Game Server) NightStalker, can you check this out with your ISP or whoever runs your gateway network? |
Re: Server Down?
Could it be related to the 3rd-Level / Cogent de-peering thingy?
|
Re: Server Down?
i tried to manually open up those ports on my router but that still didnt seem to make anything work
|
Re: Server Down?
Nightstalker: We appreciate your patience and your help with this. We're still not giving up, although I personally am a bit stumped at the moment. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...s/confused.gif
Andre's smarter about this stuff than I am though. I'm hoping he continues to think of ideas I wouldn't. =) |
Re: Server Down?
im not giving up either, i very much enjoy playing the game and cant wait for the moment i can return to internet play, until then im open for ideas, it still boggles my mind that only this game seems not to work on internet, the other pc games i have work flawlessly online.
|
Re: Server Down?
Trust me, we're just as boggled as you! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif
In a way, I almost wish this affected more people. Then we could at least hopefully detect a common trend and figure something out! If you don't mind, email me at bugs-at-tinyhero-dot-com, and we'll set up a time for me to bring up a copy of the servers on a different machine, and we'll see if that helps... -Hiro_Antagonist |
Re: Server Down?
Right now, server seems to be, if not down, at least glitchy. I just had two games interrupted by double disconnects with Sammas.
|
Re: Server Down?
We'll look into this today. Sorry for the trouble, and hopefully we'll have it figured out ASAP.
Thanks for telling us! =) -Hiro_Antagonist |
Re: Server Down?
PhilD, at the time of your posting, I believe the server was unexpectedly rebooted. Things seem normal now, and I'm still looking into what may be causing problems with the LOL services or the main server in general.
|
Re: Server Down?
Right now, server seems to be down. Not that it matters much - it's about a week since I last saw someone in the lobby, and I do connect most of the time when I'm at my PC...
|
Re: Server Down?
Maybe we need a LoL IRC channel that anyone can idle in, uses up less system resources than the game, can be setup to give audio and visual feedback when someone says something. Also it would be a good place to just discuss the game.
Sound good? |
Re: Server Down?
On closer inspection the server is indeed down http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif
|
Re: Server Down?
Hey guys,
I've put in a call to Andre, who will bring it back up as soon as he's able. He or I will post here when it's back up. We'll also be looking into what the problem is so we can prevent it from happening again. Thanks for your patience. -Hiro_Antagonist |
Re: Server Down?
The server is back up, but I'm still trying to interpret the error messages as to why it failed. I verified that I was able to start a game and do a few turns back and forth.
