Flat Planel Displays Are WAY Better
I have been using a flat panel monitor now for about two months and I have to say, when going back to a CRT monitor I much prefer the flat panel.

Re: Flat Planel Displays Are WAY Better
ehhh not, CRTs have higher resolutions, no blurring, and are cheaper. You should have gotten yourself a nice 22' CRT and you'd be alot happier now.

Re: Flat Planel Displays Are WAY Better
And can be viewed from the sides.

So in conclusion unless you have to fit your computer into a closet, a flat panel display is not the way to go. |
Re: Flat Planel Displays Are WAY Better
I prefer the LCD panel. I use an LCD monitor at work and a CRT at home. The only trouble with LCD is that if you use any resolution lower than the maximum, sometimes things come out a bit fuzzy. Also, my monitor has a stuck pixel. Still, I like the color and sharpness of the LCD.
|
Re: Flat Planel Displays Are WAY Better
Oh yeah that too, if you don't run the LCD at its native resolution you get major fuzziness
|
Re: Flat Planel Displays Are WAY Better
Looking at my flat panel monitor, 1280x1024 is plenty for me, I see no blurring at all, 17" is quite large enough, the picture stays perfectly clear at a considerably wider angle than I would ever need it to, and it's a whole lot lighter and takes up much less desk space than a CRT would. All this for considerably less than $300. I think I would save little more than $100 by getting a comparable CRT, and it would be much less convenient to move or arrange things around.
|
Re: Flat Planel Displays Are WAY Better
Flat screen, no warping, better color, no bluring, better graphics resolution, NOW WARPING, cost less to run, take up less space, and cost about the same now as a 21" CRT.
|
Re: Flat Planel Displays Are WAY Better
You cant argue with my 20" flat panel this dell is the best thing I ever bought. lets hope SE5 can play in 1600x1200.
|
Re: Flat Planel Displays Are WAY Better
No black bands at the edges of the screen, far more crisp image, elegant design etc.
|
Re: Flat Planel Displays Are WAY Better
I looked back at a CRT screen after being on a LCD for a while... Wow, the picture looked so warped. The advantages of a LCD... Perfect color, perfect geometry... No unused space, crisp, not blurry... If your picture is blurry, you need to adjust the phase.
|
Re: Flat Planel Displays Are WAY Better
Flats are catching up with CRTs, unless you have a good refresh rate, you still get ghosting images which are less likely on a CRT.
And as far as weight and bulk of CRTs - Think of it as a strength training device. "And one and two and one and two..." |
Re: Flat Planel Displays Are WAY Better
Ghosting images don't happen on the newer flatscreens. The refresh rates are fast on most of the ones I've seen.
|
Re: Flat Planel Displays Are WAY Better
Ghosting is almost always due to a bad cable, not the screen itself.
LCDs do suffer when running at a resolution that dosen't evenly divide into the number of pixels on the physical screen. Either you need a black band, or most of the physical pixels will not line up with the signal. |
Re: Flat Planel Displays Are WAY Better
Abra-ca-dabra... threadius necromancius...
I experienced a major problem 2 weeks ago that took out my main 17" monitor, my motherboard's PCI bus and my C:drive. Needless to say I've got some new stuff. I bought 2 Samsung Syncmaster 740B flatpanel monitors at buy.com. I had read reviews about the remarkable 8ms refresh rate and decided not to invest in "old technology" (read CRT). Now, I have been against LCD's since I first saw them. Milky, fuzzy, slow, ghost images, PRICE!!, etc. I'll tell you what though, I've changed my mind. These phongers are bright, crisp, and fast!! I recommend this monitor to anyone in the market for new ones. T |
Re: Flat Planel Displays Are WAY Better
I don't think posting to a thread that's been idle barely a month rises to the level of thread necromancy. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...ies/tongue.gif

Re: Flat Planel Displays Are WAY Better
That's only a minor hit on your "street cred", Turin.
|
Re: Flat Planel Displays Are WAY Better
I just felt silly yanking it out of page 3 or 4 or wherever it was, so I did the wavey-armey-magic-wandey thing to detract negative attention from myself...

Re: Flat Planel Displays Are WAY Better
Don't forget LCDs produce much less heat http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif
This could be a good thing or a bad thing, depending on the season and where you are... let's just say that in the summer I WISH I had LCD displays for my computers. |
Re: Flat Planel Displays Are WAY Better
I have a big old CRT taking up tons of space, spitting out heat, shooting electrons through me, etc. However, it was much cheaper than LCDs http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif |
Re: Flat Planel Displays Are WAY Better
CRTs are cheaper, but if you have the money, you should go with the LCD monitor. Crisper display, perfect geometry, takes up less space, and can be brighter.
|
Re: Flat Planel Displays Are WAY Better
I like mine. I just wish I could figure out how to clean it.
|
Re: Flat Planel Displays Are WAY Better
It's easy. Your computer store should sell these alcohol wipes, which you buy in order to easily clean your monitor. Don't mind if you press down on it too far, you won't damage it.
|
Re: Flat Planel Displays Are WAY Better
A guy once told me to use alcohol wipes on my paint ball googles. "Go ahead it won't hurt them." I followed his advise and much to my surprise I had to buy new goggles.
Thanks Ash, I know your not being facious, but are you sure I can use alcohol wipes on a flat panel monitor? |
Re: Flat Planel Displays Are WAY Better
Certain types of plastic react very poorly to alcohol. Other types aren't affected at all. Your guy could very well have used them on his with no problem if he had the right kind.
I would want to know for sure what an LCD screens is made of before touching it with an alchohol wipe. If the outer surface is glass you should be ok, but if it's some sort of polymer or if the glass has an anti-reflective coating you could be in trouble. You should always refer to the manufacturers instructions. The LCD manufacturers, not the wipe manufacturers that is. |
Re: Flat Planel Displays Are WAY Better
I have a 18" flat panel monitor... (I know 18" sounds weird, but trust me! NEX Multisync LCD 1880SX")
I used CRT's for so many years, and I always gave the advice to people to go for a big crt rather than a tft if you have the cash, but the truth is now, I would advise this every time image looks so much sharper, even better than a flat crt, no horrible black border, and unlike early ones, I can view at all angles, and it is bright. It just looks better, and everything about it feels better. |
Re: Flat Planel Displays Are WAY Better
I've used the alcohol wipes for years on both my monitors without problems. But yeah, you should probally refer to the manufacterer.
With LCDs, it's a lot sharper, because you don't have to mess with the path of electrons hitting the correct pixels on the screen. The no black border is cool, makes me look at CRT monitors and wonder if that's what I really had to suffer with for years. |
Re: Flat Planel Displays Are WAY Better
Meh. You want one of those new transparent monitors.
|
Re: Flat Planel Displays Are WAY Better
What's the biggest screen available on LCD's these days?
Is there much difference between the manufacters in LCD's other then options? Any recomomdations on which brand is better? |
Re: Flat Planel Displays Are WAY Better
If you have the cash, you can get any size!
|
Re: Flat Planel Displays Are WAY Better
The biggest screen size is about 60 inches. In other words, really really big.
|
Re: Flat Planel Displays Are WAY Better
WOW!!! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...es/redface.gif
So what is the price, about $600 USD per inch? $3,600.00 for a 60 inch screen. I would love something like that for my computer. I could use the life size ICONs. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...es/biggrin.gif Thanks for the info, but what about manufactures? Who's got a good rep and a quality product? |
Re: Flat Planel Displays Are WAY Better
Sharp Aquos and anything by LG are fantastic. (LG's stuff all comes from Zenith's foray into the high-tech display market a few years back.)
If you go for a rear-projection setup with a DLP projector like NEC and a hanging or mounted translucent screen like a Da-Lite you can do 200" or more. It's all time and money my friends. |
Re: Flat Planel Displays Are WAY Better
Well, after seven years of dedicated service, my Compaq monitor finally bit the big one, refusing to power up, etc., etc. So, I just ordered a Samsung to replace the old soldier. This means a viking funeral for both computer and screen now... Guess I am making a trip to the coast this weekend.
|
Re: Flat Planel Displays Are WAY Better
Sweet! I want to give my old computers a viking funeral.
|
Re: Flat Planel Displays Are WAY Better
Anyone else ever play The Lost Vikings? I almost beat that.
|
Re: Flat Planel Displays Are WAY Better
Console? PC? Never heard of it. Info please.

You, my cheesy little friend, are obnoxious.
Yet not entirely unamusing. I'll just Google the name of the game I guess. |
Re: Flat Planel Displays Are WAY Better
Oh, sorry - I lost track of what I had posted there.
As far as I know, PC/DOS. It's a humourous platformer, wherein you control three vikings, one with a shield, one with a bow and one that's athletic. Not at the same time. The've been abducted by aliens and have to escape. Little logic is involved in the games, but they are very fun. I nearly beat it, too. |
Re: Flat Planel Displays Are WAY Better
I believe it originated as a SNES game. Or maybe it was ported there... who knows.
|
Re: Flat Planel Displays Are WAY Better
Hi there Fyron http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...es/biggrin.gif

You can download it right here in the good old DOS version (fits on a floppy), but it's actually a SNES console game. Very interesting, puzzling game that one, I almost finished it, but the last level is an absolute nightmare back in that alien ship http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...ies/stupid.gif Btw, back on topics, I have a 17" Viewsonic LCD since january and I would never trade it back for a CRT http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif Some lower-quality video might seem more pixelized, because it's so much sharper. It was a godsend when I was designing microelectronics, 1 pixel wide lines are a nightmare on a CRT... |
Re: Flat Planel Displays Are WAY Better
I agree. My Photoshop stuff is waaaaay easier to do on here.

My mother got my a flatscreen as a gift shortly thereafter, and I LOVE it. Now, if only she'd gotten my a CDR for backuping files, since I lost, well, everything a few days ago when my OS went (harddrive's ok, but my OS was utterly gone for some insane reason, ergo I couldn't save anything to a thumbdrive). |

Except it never popped. Instead, about twice a week, it would go wiggly, and lose another bit of width. I had it on my desk until it was down to half the normal width, and getting unreadable, but by then there was a new monitor lined up. This LCD is great. |
Re: Flat Planel Displays Are WAY Better
Um... You know you can correct that? Simply adjust the CRT's settings, and it will be back to full width. And degaussing would help, too.
|
Re: Flat Planel Displays Are WAY Better
I'm not stupid NA.
The width setting was naturally already at MAX, but the capacitor which deals with that aspect of the system was leaking or slowly burning, or something deadly. Actually, now that I've thought about it, I guess it did eventually explode a day or two after the screen was down to half-width and thusly super-bright. I do remember finding half a capacitor sitting on the circuit board when we cracked 'er open later. And a split/peeled top half fell out. |
Re: Flat Planel Displays Are WAY Better
Ah, that makes sense. I've never had a CRT screen burn out on me, however. They seem solid enough to last years.
|
Re: Flat Planel Displays Are WAY Better
Not an infitite number of years... It is a universal law that all hardware will fail.
