Shadow Fleet - PUBLISHED

This is a work in progress. Please note that if I went with the actual dark look of the shadow ships, you would not be able to see them in the game. As it stands now, you migh not be able to now.

great ships so far http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif, IMO the engine glow would be nicer if it were green like the colony ships, ohhh that starbase looks great!!!! great work!

I think he means the purple weapons(?) glow.

But I could tell this was an AT shipset straight off, you do have a certain style of design. Most of the ships are scaled up or down versions of on hull shape. This isn't a criticism, all the ships look good and it make the fleet consistent, it's just a comment.

Re: Preview - Shadow Fleet

Most of AT's fleets "build" on each other. There is a consistency that makes the fleet look like they were designed with previous ships in mind. Looks good, AT.

I like them a LOT. Especially the Dreaudnoughts, Juggernought and Col-ships.

Where did you get the station-designs ? I saw them in a Armada 2 mod, but now that you used them as well, i guess they are canon ?

Please come up with some good troops and weapon platforms, and please dont use the same weapon platforms you usually do http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

Compare them to the stock shipsets, and you will see Atrocities is doing his shipsets exactly the way all stock-ships are done. The different ships of each shipset are usually only bigger and have some extensions. I would like to have each shipset with truly unique ships/pictures, but that would probably multiply the amount of time necessary to create just a single set http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif

I like them very much, especially this "wave"-texture.
It gives them a sort of undefined shape which I find very fitting.

Congratz, really cool. The WPLs look really cool.
One complain though. The fighters are very good. They are okay, but arent canon. There is canon material about shadow fighers available, search the web for "shadow" and "spitfire", cuz "spitfire" is how they are named, you will see considerable difference compared to standart shadow vessels since they have no "arms" or "legs".

Nontheless, great work.

General Woundwort October 18th, 2005 03:09 PM

Re: Preview - Shadow Fleet

Please, don't get too wound up on "canonical accuracy". I'm sure AT knows about Shadow fighters. Maybe they don't look good in SEIV format. Besides, we lost one AT shipset already (Mimbari) because people got too picky on "canon", so cut him some slack. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

The thing with the fighters is they all looked like some of the large ships. I used the fighter design as the SCOUT ship.

Actually, you are wrong, AC.
Attached is a picture, which shows a proper Shadow fighter. Dont take me wrong, i just wanted to correct you. I like the shipset nontheless.
Which leads me to another point. Im about to join a new PBW game. Is there any chance you might finish the shipsets missing pictures ? In that case, i would love to play it http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

We aim to please http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif That was my goal with the Bartelians, but it didn't turn out exactly as planned. Right now I'm working on a (massive) set which does do that thing.

Of course, some ships'll look like each other; but these are just the ship "families", in which each ship is based on the previous incarnation. The Scouts, Escorts, Cutter, Corvette and Light DD are all based on the same design, and so are, for instance, everything between Cruiser and Battlecruiser, but regardless of this each "family" is significantly different from the others. So while a Cruiser seen from the front is somewhat reminiscent of a DD family ship seen from the front, there'll be plenty of differences in them. Not in the least where texture is concerned http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif I'm working on the Battleship family now, and trust me it's wholly different from everything else I've got so far.

Sorry to post semi-related stuff like this here, but I just thought I'd mention it. Looks very nice as always AT http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif You have a high standard of quality!

The Shadow Fleet v1.0

To View Race Click HERE

From what we have been able to gather we know that the Shadow race is one of the First Ones. They are an incredibly old race who at one time were dedicated to peaceful exploration of space. But over the millennium they began to adopt the theories of chaos and began to wage an ugly repetitive 1,000 year war with other races in the galaxy. They believed that through chaos, change would come. That races would evolve, and become more. This philosophy of chaos led to war after war every 1,000 years or so. Eventually only the great cataclysmic brought chaos to the Shadows chaos campaign. Now that travel through the stars is once again possible the Shadows have reemerged to once again bring chaos to the galaxy.

Re: Preview - Shadow Fleet

some more info on the shadows:

"The Shadows" (a name given to them by the younger races, as their true name - at ten thousand letters - is unpronounceable) are the most ancient of the surviving First Ones, the second to gain sentience in the Galaxy. For more than a million years, the Shadows warred with the remaining First Ones, and suffered their greatest defeat ten thousand years ago. One thousand years ago the Shadows returned, and were barely defeated by the Vorlons and the younger races, led by the Minbari with the help of Valen. They dispersed throughout the galaxy, waiting for an opportunity to come back into power. The Shadows' overriding philosophy is chaos. They believe in the survival of the fittest, in that only through chaos and war do "stronger" civilizations reach their maximum potential; this belief stands in high contrast to the Vorlon's belief in slow but guided progress - though both races use external manipulation to achieve their goals. Their adopted homeworld is Z'ha'dum. Their physical appearance is vaguely insectoid, though this may be an encounter suit. Additionally, their advanced understanding of the nature of matter allows them to "phase," making them visible only to obscure bandwidths of the electro-magnetic spectrum. The Shadows are believed to be the first to discover and manipulate Hyperspace. Their technology, like the Vorlons, is organic, and they use sentient beings as CPUs for their ships - resultantly, telepaths can interfere with or destroy their technology. True to their "Shadow" name, they utilize associate races and slaves, known as Thralls, to guide races to chaos and war, without being seen themselves.

Oh, they were seen several times. It was always very brief. Just like the shark in "Jaws" they had to have a good buildup and not too much exposure.

Re: Preview - Shadow Fleet

I thought that the Vorlons and Shadows were the youngest races of the 'First Ones' and all the older races moved on beyond the 'Rim'. At least that's how I remember the story told to Sheridan at Z'ha'dum by "The First One" (I forget his name).

Re: Preview - Shadow Fleet

You are right, Vorlons and Shadow were actually the "youngest" of the old ones. At least i believe so. Some month ago i made a post about the old-ones-matter on some kind of forum, and people were able to told me the names of the other races and their history, but unfortunally i wasnt able to remember all that. I know of the Kirishac, the Torvalus, Walkers...and 2 or 3 more which i dont remember.

Baron Munchausen November 13th, 2005 03:32 PM

Re: Preview - Shadow Fleet

While it's true that the Vorlons were one of the younger of the 'First Ones' the Shadows were actually the oldest of all races except for the race that 'Lorien' came from. This is clearly stated in the original scripts by JMS, it's not some deduction or assumption.

http://www.midwinter.com/lurk/guide/038.html

"In the Shadow of Z'ha'dum"

Delenn:
We have no other name for them. The Shadows were old when even the ancients were young. They battled one another over and over across a million years. The last Great War against the Shadows was ten thousand years ago. It was the last time the ancients walked openly among us. The Shadows were only defeated, not destroyed. A thousand years ago, the Shadows returned to their places of power, rebuilt them, and began to stretch forth their hand. Before they could strike, they were defeated by an alliance of worlds, including the Minbari and the few remaining First Ones who had not yet passed beyond the veil. When they had finished, the First Ones went away. All but one.

Xrati November 13th, 2005 04:48 PM

Re: Preview - Shadow Fleet

That's the name I couldn't remember 'Lorien,' Thanks! The way I remembered the story was wrong then. I thought the Shadows and Vorlons were both the youngest. My appologies to you B5 fans. (Don't worry I'm one too! Only just not as well informed as others. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif )
