The Tome v2.0 available - updated attachment

1 Attachment(s)
Version 2.0 of The Tome is now available for download. Horst has been very hard at work and added a TON of information. So he should be credited with most of what you see that is new. Including -

~ Castle information/stats and the ability to plug in nations and castle types to see defense info and number of defensive shots per round

~ Expanded pretender info/stats and the ability to enter desired attribute numbers and instantly see the three least expensive nation/pretender combinations needed to achieve those attributes.

Enjoy!

Daesthai

PS - it is a known issue that Edi has updated the UnitDB and those changes have not yet been reflected here. Posting this now, though incomplete, is for two reasons. First to keep ahead of the Dom3 rush, and secondly because Horst and I felt that the castle and pretender calculators could be of use now rather than waiting for us to update the unit info.
~

updated the attachment with a .rar containing edits, and both .xls and open office versions.

The Tome is very useful.

My thanks to all the people involved in making it!

Now available on Arryn's site, too. Thanks Arryn!

Re: The Tome v2.0 available

Does the spells section also contain the globals?

Edi October 25th, 2005 05:05 AM

Re: The Tome v2.0 available

Yes, it's just been quicksorted to show combat spells by default. Select the dropdown menu and select "all" to see everything and "Ritual" to see the global and other overland spells.

By the way, not to sound like a grouch, but the credits page has its alignment screwed up so everyone is credited with wrong things. I'm credited with the Spell DB, which I most certainly have not done, Alneyan gets credit for Arryn's site and so forth. Looks like the name list starts one row too early or something.

You also have some misspellings (example as exemple, missiles as missls and strength as strenght), but nothing major. You can get rid of those simply by enabling spellchecking and taking a look at where it throws the red lines.

Is it compatible with open office?
I've tried the pretender tab with open office and it didn't work well.

Re: The Tome v2.0 available

No idea. I use Open Office myself (v2.0, not the earlier one), but I haven't tried to use the Tome. Just took a quick look at it today. It's entirely possible it will only work properly in MS Office, because the MS Office suite has all kinds of proprietary crap embedded into the file formats themselves and probably also into the way macros and whatever else are implemented.

A good illustration is the Units & Equipment DB, the Open Office 2.0 version is only about 192 kB (183 plus disk space extra), while the MS Office version, which was saved from the exact same file with just a file format change, is a monstrous 928 kB (919 kB + disk space extra). In other words, it takes almost five times as much space and has nothing more in the contents. There's 700 kB of bloatware crap, incompetent file formatting and general wastefulness in that.

Just try and imagine what something like the Tome entails. Usually a good rule of thumb is that if it was done natively in Open Office, it works in MS Office, but not necessarily the other way around. The basics do, but more complex things run into the intentionally built proprietary incompatibility barriers Microsoft likes to put in all of its products to prevent them from working properly with anything but MS software.

I can't speak for Horst, but I know that I've been working straight out of MS Office. Sorry if that has created a problem for folks. I'll look into Open Office for future releases.

The Tome v2.0 available (open office version)

Hi all,
i finished the open-office version and sent it to daesthai in the hope that he will attach it to the first posting of this thread. Please note that the new open office version 2.0 is needed.

The open-office version has a minor flaw compared with the excel-version:
In the pretender sheet it is necessary to set the magic skill autofilter (the yellow cells) *again* after you changed the nation autofilter (the "x"). Else, the "three cheapest Pretender ranking" is not recalculated.
I'm sorry that i could not do better, it has something to do with the part-result/autofilter function.
As Edi pointed out, the Open Office version saves a lot of disk space: 348 kb versus 1.8 Mb !

Actually, the two columns are separate from each other. People were thanked for several reasons, some for documents they wrote, some for simply helping out or offering testing/suggestions. Then the documents referenced were listed separately. I'll try to dress it up to make that fact more obvious. I'll probably just put one over the other rather than side-by-side.

Thanks. I'll adress those once I'm home from work.

As for the open office version, I'll post that once Horst and I can address some of these edits - so later tonight, early tomorrow.

Re: The Tome v2.0 available

Wow. I had had some problems using OpenOffice as well, and this kind of support is really outstanding for something fan-made. It seems I'll have to use Tome more, because it works better than ealrier, and because the makers are great guys, and because it would be shame to let the work be wasted. Thank you in advance!

Thanks for the kind words, Endoperez. And thanks to everyone for the comments, support, and help!

Updated the attachment on the original posting with .rar file that contains both the .xls and the open office version. Also edited for spelling, made a correction to the color coding on the spells page, and edited the acknowledgements page to be more readable.

after reading your posting i examined my stats and noted:
morale: +3 !

I will make good use of the morale boost to continue the work for daesthai's tome v3.0: featuring the new unit DB, conceptual balance mod and unit rebalance mod. will need a while...

Re: The Tome v2.0 available

Took a slightly longer, better look. A very, very impressive work, this one is. I haven't used it, mostly because I have not needed it for anything (I know most of the unit stuff by heart for obvious reasons), but I expect the spell section will come in very useful if we (Kaljamaha and I) ever get to the point where we can start porting the Dom2 magic system for the DQ pen & paper RPG.

In any case, this thing makes my own spreadsheet-fu look weak indeed by comparison. Even if I don't understand half the stuff that went into making the Tome as user friendly as it is, I can certainly appreciate the effort that has gone into it. Too bad this place does not have a proper goggle-eyed smiley, but let's try it anyway: http://bbs.stardestroyer.net/images/smiles/icon_eek.gif

The Credits page looks a lot better now. The problem with the earlier version that inspired my comment was that side by side those columns looked like people's names were being linked to the documents that appeared next to them. Now there's no confusion and everybody gets their glory too. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Re: The Tome v2.0 available

Is there any compendium containing all spell/unit/pretender/magic/magic trinket text descriptions ? I'm sucker for these.

Horst F. JENS October 26th, 2005 05:48 AM

Re: The Tome v2.0 available

The original description of the spells is int the tome, in the sheet "spells". You need to hover the mouse pointer over the cell with the spell name, and a comment field with the original description will appear.
For other stuff (Items, Gods..) you have to look into the game itself..

Re: The Tome v2.0 available

Or the manual. It's handy. Just a few days ago I realized that there aren't Ring of Fire/Ice/Poison/Lighting, or Ring of X Resistance, but instead Rings of Fire and Frost, that of Tamed Lightning, and Snake Ring.Little things have surprisingly big effect on the scale of things.

daesthai October 26th, 2005 11:09 AM

Re: The Tome v2.0 available

To add to what Horst said, spell descriptions are in the tome (along with references to manual page numbers), as are descriptions of pretenders and units. Admitedly, the unit descriptions need an update to match those of Edi's UnitDB.

As for descriptions of magic items....hmmmmm.....::strokes chin thoughtfully::....Horst, I think I know what I want to work on for version 3.0. =)

Good grief, I hope I can get that done before Dom3 gets here....

Re: The Tome v2.0 available

I'd like to create a primitive database of, say, spells (all in 1 file; 1 line - 1 spell) and then write some stupid bash/awk/grep script to display the spells I want.

For example: grep fire | grep conjuration | awk ' $4<=5 && $5<=3 {print $0}'

Such a stupid script would print me exactly what I want - in this case, fire conjuration 5 (or less) spells with fire path of 3 or less. Not really possible with manual. I guess I'll have to retype everything manually.
XLS files and heavy office software is not really my thing.

Re: The Tome v2.0 available

There's also The Grimoire online. http://www.sangster.org/dominions/grimorie.php
Not just that many options, but pretty close, and it's faster. Or at least, browsers open faster than Excel/OpenOffice.

Re: The Tome v2.0 available

B0rsuk, that's exactly what the .xls autofilters allow you to do and the reason I created the page in the first place.

The filters I'm referring to are those grey arrow boxes on the column headings.

Using your example, go to the "School" column, click the grey arrow, and from the drop box select "Conjuration". Now only conjuration spells will be listed. If you then go to the "1st path" column and use the arrow box to select "Fire", only fire based conjuration spells are listed. If you wanted, you could continue to do additional filters for the levels of the schools or paths...or ANY of the columns. You can do that with any combination of any number of columns in any order to get very specific lists.

It's also possible to do compound filters by clicking on the arrow and selecting "Custom". Now there will be a dialogue box that lets you set multiple rules like "only list spells that equal Fire OR Water". Or list everything that is NOT a Evocation spell.

It's really simple to use those filters, let me know if you have any questions about it.

Any news on that? The tome is pretty useful, and a tome respecting the complete conceptual balance mod would be even more useful! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Things are progressing nicely. To be honest, I'm the reason for the slow down. A hectic work schedule has forced me to table some things that Horst has requested.

But it shouldn't be much longer. =)
