How Would You Respond? UPDATE

I got this message the other day in my Gamspot inbox.

Quote:

Space Empires iV
normally wouldnt take time to look at a review or respond to one. Space Empires is the weakest game ever, how would you rate it highly. The community is full of little geeks that wait for newbees to come out (or in) and they pounce on them to gain more points. Im an expert flyer and fighter, but could not get ahead.
What a total waste of money, totally crap game

I replied with the following statement:

RE: Space Empires iV
Your alone in your belief that the game is weak. It has been on the market now for five years and is one of the most popular 4x games ever made. I find your comments to be evidence that you have never really played the game. I cannot help but feel sorry for you.

Hey, that just totally describes us, doesn't it! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...s/rolleyes.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/Sick.gif

I'm not sure what this guy's talking about, but it sure as hell isn't this community! "...to gain more points" ??? What the hell?

Oh well, I guess everyone is entitled to their opinion...unfortunately.

Re: How Would You Respond?

I would give him an invite to KOTH (or the Ratings, if it had happened several months ago), so I can beat him and gain points and/or climb the Hill. Why do you ask?

Now if you will excuse me... Full thrust and direct course to Ed! Firing all forward cannons! Need to rack up some more points!

Re: How Would You Respond?

The comments "pouncing on geeks" and "expert flyer and fighter" suggest that the original poster is thinking of a different game. Could he have confused "Space Empires IV" and "Space Empires: Starfury"?

And he has the nerve to call *us* "geeks"? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/smirk.gif

He's obviously confused. SEIV is a 4x game, not a shoot-em-up. And Starfury isn't multiplayer.

Yet another example of the 4x/1PS bifurcation gone bad...

The message was sent back May to my inbox at Gamespot. I never bothered to check it until today.

I honestly have no clue what the guy is talking about. I think he was just a disgruntled MOO3 fanboy who was a bit peeved at me for saying MOO3 sucked ***.

I wouldn't have. He's obviously frusterated because the game concepts cannot be mastered by the speed of one's mouse clicks. *shrug*

Space Empires is not really a good game for shoot em up type people to play. Reference my brother. He got bored after the first ten minutes because he didn't get to shoot or blow up anything.

Re: How Would You Respond?

...I like shoot'em'ups.

I like pretty much everything but sports games (Only got into one of those, but I was rather good at it).

I guess part of it is that I'm good at any type of game, but great at none. (Although I can be great at a game).

One thing I do know is that it takes some patience to learn this game. Those with little patience will never stick with it long enough to enjoy it.

Re: How Would You Respond?

Well you have to remember that this game requires thought and not just a fast clicker finger.

Re: How Would You Respond?

I think he was thinking that SEIV was a RTS game where you build things to gather resources then build ships and fight ala Armada.

DeKaye October 31st, 2005 05:19 PM

Re: How Would You Respond?

Yes, this is indeed a thinkers game. Chess comes to my mind when thinking of SEIV, but SEIV is a lot more fun and has a lot more freedoms. It does sound like this fellow was looking for the fast paced, shoot em up type game with quick results. Not everyone is cut out for SEIV and games that are like it (if there are any like SEIV - I'm not a gamer so don't know what is out there in gamedom).

In reply to Atrocities question, I think I would have just explained that I feel he was looking for a different game than what SEIV can offer. Then maybe explain the concept of SEIV to him and why lots of people have enjoyed the game for many years. And add that just because he did not enjoy SEIV this does not make a game lousey or however he put it. Lots of games I do not enjoy, but I can see they are great games considering what they offer, playability, reliability, and quality.

This is my two cents worth. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...es/biggrin.gif

Some people can't see quality in a game unless it has ground breaking graphics.

Re: How Would You Respond?

It's unfortunate that there are people like this that work at web sites and magazines that review games. I hope he doesn't get a say in any SEV review. Calling a game weak becaus it doesn't suit your taste is quite unprofessional, espcialy for an online gaming magazine(or whatever they are).

Re: How Would You Respond?

"Expert flyer and fighter"

LOL that's the problem he is an exper "lone wolf' not a good command mentality there.

If you prefer simply flying and fighting you wouldn't make a good Ruler because you'd get bored with all that damned time of peace and travel and exploration bleeek.

LOL Although I LOVE "expert" yet we are geeks because we are "expert rulers" instead of simply "bash em beat um club em bite em." types http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Besides most people who use the term "expert flyer and fighter" generally mean THEY just *** camp and snipe at people respawning OR THEY wait for noobies to come onto a server and just stalk them around and shoot them repeatedly.

I mean if you have EVER played a multi-player FPS or Star Wars Jedi Knight game you'll know that most of the experts are laming little turdsacks that don't use skill to win.

Delta force comes to mind with the freakin Grenade spammers, OF COURSE you'll kill twenty people in a row when you just spam high explosive grenade launchers at the enemy spawn point lol. What takes skill is when you go with a short range G-11 and OWN those bastards with the grenade launchers! (sorry flashbacks to when I had nothing but my G-11 and a K-bar lol)

Anyway yeah this guy is either to dumb to realize he has the wrong genre or too much of a "bash em, beat em, club em, bite em" mentality to realize finesse and strategy can be fun too.

Re: How Would You Respond?

This person has obviously never actually played the game, if you want my honest oppinion, and please read right to the end before you judge!

I love strategy games and I love space or futuristic games, I was looking everywhere for really good game, I have been playing and love the X series of games for ages (www.egosoft.com) I had just heard of Space Empires 4.

I looked everywhere in shops, and could not find it ANYWHERE (UK), I did the only thing I could think of, Download it, (by now I am fed up of demos that do not give good impressions of games),

I tried going in to the game about 4 times in total, but each time I got fed up after about 5 mins thinking that it is boring, all the icons are very overwhealming, and I can tell you for sure that the tutorial is very very long and after reading 4 pages, you get a little board!

I thought that there must be more to this game, and then I descided I would try and actually get in to it, I played one game in full, and I LOVED IT! when you start off and the best you can do is make a simple ship that has basic weapons, you guess it can only get better weapons and range e.t.c. but then when you play for longer and get new techs like steller manipulations, it certainly adds loads to your game.

After playing one more game, I knew this was the game for me, and I immediatly purchased the game, and I just could not get enough of it!

It is now one of the best game I have ever played with so much depth, and I just love it! personally I spend to much time on it, what I do is leave the game on when I am at my pc, and just do turns whilst in between work, like every 30 mins, or at weekends only, you really need to discipline yourself to only do it at certain times or you spend for to much time.

This game a I said really is good, the best infact, but if you have never played it, it can look bad and very overcomplicated. When you give it time, that is when you can enjoy it, If you only play it for 2 mins and make a judgement, you really are not giving a honest review

Hey wilhil, I think I saw a post of yours at the egosoft forums a couple days ago! Do you go by wilhil there too? Can't wait for X3 to arrive! (later release in North America... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/evil.gif )

I got two responses on the 12th of this month.

Quote:

RE: Space Empires iV
Feel sorry for yourself that you people are in a miniscule minority. There are thousands like me who started playing space strategy games before 3D graphics were available. Your game turns us off, it has little depth much like you.

And Then

Quote:

RE: Space Empires iV
Sorry, I remarked about the wrong game. I was talking about Galactic Empires and got the name wrong. You have a great game. I have asked gamespot to revoke my rating
with regrets

I guess now that SEIV has been around for FIVE, yes count them, FIVE years, and is due to be re-released in stores, the game has earned its crediblity. Largely in part to the fans, Shrapnel Games, and mostly Aaron's insightful design.

Re: How Would You Respond? UPDATE

I am glad he found the error in his judgement of SEIV. It is sad he had to resort to insulting you/ us because we find SEIV a stimulating game. Oh well. It does make one feel better that he probably feels like a putz. I may disagree with his entertainment choices, but I surely would not call him shallow because of his choices. I know lots of intellegent and very deep people that enjoy very simple games. It allows them not to have to over think because that is what they do all the time. Glad this situation is solved. :} Atrocities 1 : Obnoxious Guy 0

LOL, once he got the game name right, his review was right on the mark.
